Anybody have a computer made for editing?

what kind did you buy and how much. im going to get one soon and im going to have one made. i was wandering what the best brands are for editing and burning.

Just make one w/ lots o ram, storage (SATA), biggest P4 the board will hold, good video card, and some burners in sync, 500W supply.

You need tons of ram and memory.
You Need Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere

Dual 1.25 Powermac G4 with 2 gigs of ram, 4 80gig HD and final cut pro HD. All (minus the software) for under $1900.

Get an Intel Pentium 4 571 3.80GHz, with a an Intel D955XCSLKR Intel Socket 775 BTX Motherboard, with 2 Seagate 500GB Serial ATA Hard Drives set in a +0 raid, 2 sets of Crucial Dual Channel 2048MB PC3200 memory for 4096MB, and an eVGA GeForce 6800 GT 256MB PCI Express vidoe card to top it off... if you want you can stick in another raid configuration for 4 hardrives for max storage. And to power it up an Enermax EG851AX-VH 660Watt power supply, o and dont forget a cool looking case and some bitching cooling for this high end system, you may want to look in to liquid cooling for this baby... dont want it to get fucked up by overheating.

Only a 6800GT?

I think a 7800GTX would be much more suited. And throw out the shitty Intel cpu and board and get a nice AMD FX-51.

I use a G5 at school with Final Cut (4.5 HD I think). It is good.

Get a small TV to hook up to your rig so you can see how everything will look when you watch it not-on-the-computer. It is suprisingly different.

w/ student discount at the apple store:

G5 Dual 2 GHz = $1,799.00
G5 Dual 2.3 GHz = $2,299.00
G5 Quad 2.5 GHz = $2,999.00

Those are the base prices, you'll probably want to stuff in some more RAM on top of that. I have the dual2.3, It's been great. Obviously Quad processors is rediculous levels of sickness if you can afford it, but the dual 2.3 is good enough too.

yeh exactly....if u want an editing computer, go with a mac for sure...get the new G5 if u want to be one top of the editing and get like the best software u can find./

you don't need an insanly expensive computer to edit video on, whoever said a pentium 4 3.8 ghz is way overdoing it. 512ram, dvd burner, 1.5ghz, and some software will do it for you.

^Agreed. Although if you have the option you might want to opt for 512MB to start with only one slot taken up, so that you have room to expand.

whatever you get, i'd recomend getting an external harddrive so you can keep organized. like, i wouldn't keep your everyday files (music, random vids, documents) in the same place as editing stuff.

all you guys do realize that final cut pro HD requires a G5 for like half of its better features, right?

ideally: Dual processor G5 Tower with as much ram as you can afford, a bank of EXTERNAL firewire harddrives (the program will run with more stability... same for protools). dual big ass, high quality monitors.

good setup: G5 tower with as much ram as you can afford, good monitor or two, external firewire drive,

get you by setup: iMac G5 with as much ram as you can afford and final cut express or final cut pro-HD

i have the "good setup" plus good studio monitors. I also have a seperate G5 pro-tools setup in a seperate audio studio. i'd love to upgrade to the new dual G5s and get more ram, but i'd be out like ten grand.

This would be your best bet. You wouldn't even need final cut. Depending on your experiences, iMovie (comes with all macs) is free and will suit you just great. Good luck with your choice!

my 12" powerbook that is my daily, go everywhere setup, is exactly that. It works for basic stuff, but if you are looking to do serious editing then its not going to cut it. it works great for making basic films and clips for the internet and stuff.

get an ibook. they start at $999 ($949 if you are a student). they come with imovie which is REALLY easy to use. imac's start at like 12 and would be killer for your needs (and not a laptop) and the closest to your price-point probably.

your budget is like super super low. perhaps save up a bit more cash and put off the editing for a bit? you don't need a super crazy computer to edit videos, but $800 is pretty rough to get you in the door.

do you already have mouse, keyboard, and monitor? if you do, mac-mini's start at like $450 or $500

all of these are WAY overkill bro. unless your going to do this professionally. you would get by with a (these are all minimums)
AMD 3200+ processor
512mb Ram
120gb harddrive
and get a copy of adobe premier pro

I'd wait a couple weeks (months?) unil you've got about $1000. At that point, your options open up wide. That said, get this or something like it:

That will do awesome with iMovie and you'll be set with a kick ass LCD and a pretty sick computer. Just buy the new version of OSX (tiger) and you're golden.
