...WINTER STORM WARNING FOR TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY MORNING FOR WESTERN PLUMAS COUNTY...LASSEN PARK...AND THE WEST SLOPE OF THE NORTHERN SIERRA...
A SERIES OF PACIFIC STORMS WILL AFFECT THE NORTHERN SIERRA NEVADA TODAY THROUGH SUNDAY MORNING. A SYSTEM MOVING THROUGH THE AREA TODAY WILL BRING LIGHT SNOWFALL ABOVE THE 6000 FOOT LEVEL ALONG WITH WINDY CONDITIONS. A STRONGER STORM WILL MOVE INTO THE REGION TONIGHT AND SNOW LEVELS WITH THIS WAVE WILL BE MAINLY ABOVE THE PASSES ALONG INTERSTATE 80 AND HIGHWAY 50. VERY WINDY CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED HOWEVER WITH WIND SPEEDS OF 30 TO 40 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 60 MPH POSSIBLE OVER LASSEN COUNTY TONIGHT. THE STRONGEST PORTION OF THIS SYSTEM IS FORECAST TO MOVE THROUGH THE AREA ON SATURDAY. WIND SPEEDS ON SATURDAY COULD GUST UP TO 70 MPH OVER THE HIGHEST ELEVATIONS OF THE SIERRA. 1 TO 2 FEET OF SNOW ARE POSSIBLE BY SATURDAY AFTERNOON ABOVE THE 7000 FOOT LEVEL.
BY SATURDAY NIGHT COLDER AIR MOVING INTO THE SIERRA NEVADA WILL BEGIN TO LOWER SNOW LEVELS. IT WILL LIKELY BRING AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF HEAVY SNOW AN ALTHOUGH WINDS WILL BE DECREASING SLOWLY THEY WILL REMAIN QUITE STRONG. THE COMBINED SNOW AND WINDS WILL CAUSE WHITE OUT CONDITIONS AT TIMES. SNOW LEVELS ARE EXPECTED TO FALL TO AROUND 4000 FEET BY SUNDAY MORNING.
THIS SERIES OF STORMS WILL PRODUCE SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL ESPECIALLY SATURDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH SUNDAY MORNING. THE SIERRA NEVADA CAN EXPECT BETWEEN 4 TO 8 FEET OF NEW SNOW ABOVE THE 7000 FOOT LEVEL BY SUNDAY AFTERNOON. PERSONS TRAVELING THIS WEEKEND INTO THE MOUNTAINS SHOULD BRING CHAINS...CARRY A WINTER SURVIVAL KIT...AND CHECK THE LATEST ROAD AND WEATHER CONDITIONS PRIOR TO DEPARTURE.
