You basically take a photo and split the channels in photoshop, then print a digital negative for each of the three channels. Then you have a negative for each corresponding layer, and you print them one at a time. Tri-color is cool because when the layer is wet, you can brush off certain areas and change the colors locally by hand. You can't tell from the scan, but gum gives a pretty glossy, grainy look that you don't really get with other processes. It's a ton of work, and takes probably 8-12 hours for each print once you have the negatives done.

You mean autochrome? I'm not really familiar with the process, but I'm pretty sure that was done all in one exposure in the camera. Gum is a 19th century process though, it's just done a lot differently now with color photography and digital negatives.

I could have sworn i read about a process where they took multiple photos with different filters and then colored and stacked them. or something along those lines. i could also be totally wrong haha.

how did you print a digital negative?. i REALLY want too try this. btw that shot is so fucking sick! what camera/lens are you using?

It's a pretty complicated process, I couldn't really explain it in a single post here. You basically use a step wedge with different densities to find your base exposure for shadows, then use a CDRP (it has over 200 colors on it) to determine the color of your digital negative, which determines where the highlights fall....this is much more complicated than it sounds.

From there, you have a tonal pallette with 101 tones from black to white that you print, then scan and sample each one in photoshop to manually plot a characteristic curve for that particular process. You then apply that curve to an inverted image, print it on a clear substrate (that you compensated for the density of), and then you have yourself a working digital negative.

It's a huge pain in the dick, and I wouldn't recommend learning unless you're with someone who really knows what they are doing and you have access to a calibrated printer, a UV light box, and the chemistry you need.

People always complain about watermarks but honestly I'm at the point where I'm probably going to delete all of my photos from NS because they aren't all marked and are way too accessible. I say if you want a big watermark that's your choice - it's hardly a critique. I have become paranoid in my 'old age' I guess haha.

I will go through and pick some favs to post here though while they are all still up =)

thanks man, pretty fortuitous as well... I was just doing some event coverage and she was one of the vaudeville performers. I asked for what I thought would be a group shot and this lady just steps off to the side of the stage while everyone else shied away. Just a 430exII mounted on top of the camera with a diffusion cap... her face is such a strange combination of fear/excitement/shyness, its kind of odd
