good call on the weights... i'm still not sure what caused the replication in the motel sign though seeing as the tripod didn't move a bit. i didn't have any filters on but i'm using an extremely cheap lens so that could be the cause.

Since nothing else in the frame is blurry, I'd say its not from a light or knocked tripod, but more along the lines of something to do with your lens and glare/diffraction. Something to do with bright neon light at night, in the corner of the frame.. Hopefully someone has some better insight.

Diffraction is the most likely cause.  I am guessing he was around f/16 which on small format digital (except for macro lenses) is going to kill any sharpness your lens may have had.  What were you settings and lens?

sony's dirt cheap/stock 18-70 f/3.5-5.6 from a few years back was the lens

yup it was a small aperture, f/22 actually. 18mm focal length and 30 second shutter speed.

the root of the problem has been found. its diffraction from a tiny aperture. open er up a bit and it should go away

Shot today for a custom model building client.  Hasselbad 501cm, zeiss 150mm, leaf aptus 65 digital back.  Shot for http://www.precisemodeling.com/  The helicopter took 15 years to build from scratch. Everything works just as it would on the real helicopter, it was built from the original blue prints.

I went to the skate park the other day to see if anybody would let me shoot some photos... Now I've got a few athletes willing to go out for a planned shoot for which I'll bring a light or two instead of just my body and lens.

Before you ask, Tokina 11-16 f/2.8.
Shot @ ISO 800, 1/1250th, f/2.8, on my D90.
No flash, lighting was all natural, and all I did in post was a little contrast bump with Curves in photoshop and a bit of noise reduction.

idk, I sometimes find it useful to know the settings of a shot, maybe not action all the time, but it's sometimes useful to diagnose it or learn from it

I just hate people who approach photography like its 90% technological, the rest are art. Photography is an art form. How often do you here painters asking eachother about there brush type or canvas material? They don't because they stress on the piece of art itself.

^I don't think that really justifies your comment, some people (including myself) don't mind seeing some technical info for photos. There's a lot more that goes into taking a photo than just clicking a button, and it's often the technical nuances that make things work. If you don't care, then don't worry about it.

never on that HDR ish... went through a brief, shameful phase with it about a year ago. The last one is almost straight from the camera (I don't remember exactly but I probably just muked around with the curves a bit and maybe a little sharpening but thats all) and the first one has a little bit of a diffuse glow with a slight yellow tint around the center of the tree... on the original the edge of the highlight wasn't smooth enough so a smidgen of the diffuse glow filter helped soften the transition from highlights to midtones
