Old shot, but finally got around to posting it. Stoked to feel like I finally have a good handle on strobes (although I did blow it on this shot leaving one in the frame).
_JFarrisCould you explain your process on this shot? I went out with a strobe today and didn't come back with anything worthwhile, very frustrating, looking for tips.
Sure man! There are two PCB Einstein strobes (640ws) to camera left, at full power. Triggered them with a Pocket Wizard Flex TT1 with hypersync, so the shot was 1/1250th, f7.1, iso 160.

It looks like something I would do, which means awkward and out of control. Also, just feels a little wide, or empty, what if you shot it from above and closer to him, or from more right underneath him? Just my thoughts.

Haha yeah you're spot on.
I was trying to take it when he was right ontop of me but got too sketched every time and ended pulling my camera and self out of the way and the t3i can't burst for shit so that's annoying with something like this :/
I'd also work on the comp a bit. All of that stuff beyond the jump mound on the left is doing nothing for the image. As said before me there are many different ways of going about this but I would recommend being more concious of what you are including in the shot and why. Almost all of the frame should be portraying relevant information and including things that don't donthis is just redundant.
The first shot is the better angle but you cut off the landing which makes it look odd. We want to see where he's going. Shooting from more of a direct angle up the box would have been a little more visually pleasing.
Second shot looks like you missed the apex of the subject by just a little bit, which makes it look awkward because he's too close to the end of the box, and it ended up cutting off part of his hand which is really distracting. Shooting from lower down ( giving you more space up above) would have helped solve that situation and taking the shot a little earlier.
Are you using sequence shot when you're taking photos? Sometimes instead of taking 13 shots and hoping you got the right timing is less effective then listening to your instinct and clicking the shutter once.
Your background is nice though, I love the trees and they are visually appealing, There's not too much clutter in the background, which can easily make or break a photo.

Okay thanks! I was using burst....and the perfect shot would have been right between those. I will try taking it off burst. I am pissed I cut off his hand though on #2. But thanks a bunch for all the good info!
These two pictures are my first results from playing with my large format camera and I'm really happy with them. Not sure if that's lens falloff, a light leak, or a stray finger on the second one but I'm still happy with the final result.
