I took the intro to photo course there; so glad it wasn't restricted to art students! wish I still had access to a darkroom.
I'm all for street shots and I dig the colors in this shot!
but..
It looks to me like this man really didn't want his picture taken, correct me if I'm wrong.
This reddit comment started me thinking more about the subject of steet "ethics".
"This is a core issue in street photography. Unlike documentary photographers no attempt has been made to understand the subject - the subject is a tool to be used by the photographer at his/her whim, with narratives, personalities, and entire lives projected onto their likeness. I think there is honestly a case to be made for (some) street photography as a dehumanizing art form. As photographers we need to be mindful of this.
I know the age-old argument that tries to equivocate candidness with authenticity, and I used to believe it too - but as I've shot more, and seen more street photos, I no longer buy it. What authenticity is there in a drive-by photo of someone you've never met, never even spoken to - however briefly - and assigning stories to them that are more based in the shooter's imagination than reality?"

to be blunt, none of them are all that good, but you've gone out and tried, and that's what you do when you start! try to think about your subject and why you feel it should be recorded. what's important and exciting about it? What message does it send? what matters most is how you feel about your work, but when showing it to the public, put your best foot forward, so to speak.
at minimum, read this then read more and look at more photos. try to pick out what makes them good.
now, go out and shoot a shitload of photos. try different angles, different settings, different types. then be really self critical. take your favorites from a batch of photos and cut them in half; then again until you have 5, certainly no more than 10. then, if you really think they're worth sharing, choose 1, 2, maybe 3 to post.
it's not that a lot of photos is bad, but by choosing 1 or 2, you'll eventually be able to realize what makes them good or bad when you're out shooting, making for an overall better body of work.

im no great photographer myself and im sure there will be people that disagree with me, but here is some advice. think about your subject and why it is important.
the first two are just boring, no real subject or anything of interest. same kinda applies for number 3, but this one was slightly more interesting, it was a good learning shot to try out dof stuff but nothing worth sharing.
i personally thought the fourth one was kinda cool, but you could make it vastly better by making sure the lines are straight (right one looks like it may be slightly tilted to the left) and getting rid of the horrible black thing in the upper right corner. even just cropping that out would make it twice as good.
for the 6th one, it's kinda an interesting perspective, but i would have framed the bench on the right side of the screen and slightly increased the dof, to make it look more like a viewpoint over the water.
five was meh and the seventh was boring like the first two. if you want to shoot water, there needs to be a good subject to make the shot interesting.
like the person above me said, take a lot of pictures (especially when you are starting) and experiment with different angles, techniques, etc. and then as soon as you upload them, delete half of them. and then half again. then start going over them carefully and narrow it to only a few that you want to show everybody else. for a day of shooting, its better to have only one great picture that than 10 marginal ones. quality is always more important than quantity

Got this shot last night. HK is normally really polluted and so visibility is poor. When we get rainstorms it washes everything away for a short period of time. It was raining on and off all yesterday so I took the risk and went up to this spot. Was a complete whiteout when I arrived and dumping in down with rain. As hoped, this soon passed and I was treated to HK being super clear!

think about that for a sec. what kind of subject matter is young camera hipster? frankly he is not interesting and especially in the manner youve photographed him in does not make an interesting portrait in the slightest. his inclusion disrupts a potentially strong interplay with the foreground and background content. just because there isnt somebody standing in the frame for no reason does it mean there is no subject matter, you dont need a person for that.

It's funny that you mention this because I thought the same thing about the photo you posted on the last page with the woman in the landscape shot. Don't get me wrong though, I understand that her inclusion in the frame has more subject matter than the inclusion of "young camera hipster." Now I took the picture because he was walking toward me and stopped for a second and I liked how he stood out in the frame and (what I thought) it eventuates the symmetry. But now that I think of it, it just takes away from that aspect. Thanks for the input, I'll think about why/why not to include certain aspects in my comp.
