Skiing as a subculture

What's your guys opinions about this, do you think skiers and boarders have specific characteristics that distinguish them from the broader culture? Do we have distinct values, norms, folkways and mores which sets us upon from the mainstream culture? Do we have different characterstics when it comes to clothing, food, style of language (or other forms of communication) or the way we manage our money? If so, what are they?

Ya know, cause I was just wonderin...

Well, it matters for me, as I'm writing my sociology paper on it. I'm just trying to get some other people's opinions.

im taking sociology..uhh you cant really say we have a different sub culture, maybe in a specific sense we might, to put it better we have skiing as our most improtant socilization agent, rather than chruch or media, and this is what snowboarders and skiers have in common if you want to catagorize them as a seperate sub culture

yeah i think that theres a difference...maybe not a huge difference, but at least some. There's the fact that some of us hate the boarders and they hate us back(although thats not the case for all of us). Clothing is slightly differnt..but mostly the same...plus they have to strap into their bindings while we blow past them. Theres always the fact that we have more style than them on many things. Also we dont sit on the hill blocking everything including jumps and entrances to runs, like they do.

i like to believe we are somewhat different from them and have our own culture

My bad, I meant is there a difference between skiers + boarders compared to society as a whole, not skiers compared to boarders. I hope that clears some things up.

i wrote a paper on my sub culture and asid i was a skier, but then grouped it in with all board sports. like surfing and how our values and tounge decended mainly from surfing. we also gain a lot from the snowboarding and skateboarding culture. we are only distinguished by the brands we wear, and the only ones to notice the subtil difference is us skiers. of course only newschool and freestyle skiing, none of this racing shit.

yes we are our own subculture. We dress a certian way, we listen to certain music, we have our own language (steeze) we are a subculture

i think we definatly do. i would say were more "hippie" then a averadge boarder. not in all ways but if you look at it in some ways we are.

I think the unoffical anthem of all things skiing is Sublime, Atmosphere, and Marley... although I wish it was ska... (sigh)

its really hard to claim that all skiers listen to the same music, some guys on here like their "gangsta shit" and some guys like their ska. now are you claiming that every single skier has to like gangster rap to be a skier, or that everyone has to listen to punk? or even that if you listen to a certain type of music, that automatically makes you a skier? sure some people have similarities,hell, they may even cross over from lifestyle to lifestyle, but theres no way that you can say that skiers all like the same stuff.

Yes it is a subculture. I did a website of sport (agressive inline) and its subculture and its amazing to see how much influence a sport has on your life (from clothing to way of thinking).

Depends on what part of skiing since there's so many different people who ski (like super rich or piss poor). Also ski trends are just regurgitated snowboard trends so they're more similar Han people think.

I would say its a self fulfilling sub culture. As in made up. Most of us, try so hard not to be the norm that we sub sect ourselves into oblivion. Its not good enough to just be a skier. We have Park rats, Big Mountain, Racers and the BC granolas. You can take it even further with park alone. The Urban Jibers, The Pipe dude, the edit maker or the BC booter boy. Its in our nature to want to sub divide in to something unique that other don't "get" or be something special that others don't belong to. Think of that first Saga jacket you got. Was it because it was super technical and kept you dry and warm... No, it was a ticket into a group that had no membership dues. The first North Face Denali vest..... The first set of twin tips that you got with out ever going switch. We all value being part of something that makes us both unique and have a sense of belonging.

My dude bumped the thread because he is writing a paper on this topic too.

I would make a bold claim that skiers have a deeper passion than snowboarders. As a general statement. The youth, that I grew up in, would have a tendency to view snowboarders as "cooler". So some snowboarders just choose to snowboard instead of ski based on how their peers will view them.
In addition to this, snowboards have limited capabilities when it comes to hiking and exploring the backcountry. What a snowboarder will get stuck in, the skier can use poles to propel themselves out of. Being able to explore more and being able to turn off the beaten path can make you feel some type of way. This can be seen to give skiers a grater sense of freedom to pursue their passion which is to simply be out in the beauty of nature.

I like that this thread was bumped.
I would say the subculture has change drastically since this post was originally made.
1. Yes it is a subculture. An example would be a non-skier getting on this site and reading threads and not understanding the lingo like gucchi plateau (those damn gapers) and trends.
2. The culture change through the years. Going from my start where a D-spin wearing Oakley was the thing to do all the way to now with Saga/Jiberish/indie brands to triples and spin to win. The subculture has created a following for indie brands and back away a bit from the mega brands. More slang has been created, more style and its now in the olymipcs.

Its fun to go back 10 years in this forum and read some threads. Kids now would laugh at what the pros were doing and the gear we talked about. I feel old now.
