I asked one of the local ski shops about the 3 time remounting rule. They replied that it's a good guideline but that the real problem comes in when the screw holes are too close to the old holes, they have a tendency to rip out. It doesn't really affect the strength of the ski. How close is too close and what do you think about all this?
if the holes are too close they are more likely to blow out because of lack of strength for the screws themselves.
when you put a bunch of holes in a ski from re-mounting, regardless of how far apart they are you still are removing a good bit of the ski, so weak spots form where the holes are under the binding. These weak spots make it much easier for the ski to snap. Also, most companies wont warranty the skis if they break cuz you drilled them too many times.
Bascally, re-mounting is not a good idea at all. If you have to do it once it is not a really big deal. After you do it once, you really start weakening the ski. The three times rule is simply a threshold, after re-drilling three times it is usually only a matter of time before the skis snap.
