How to wash knit hats

right well i was at a bon fire and now my hat smells really bad. do i just wash it normally and then dry it or will it shrink or something. its just a yarn hat that my friend crocheted for me.

You could try filling your sink with cold water with some laundry detergent in it and handwash, then rinse, and hang it up to dry. I think that would do the least possible damage.

I believe, if crotched, that you can use cold wash on the dryer, just to be safe, let air dry(hang it)

Yea when my tam gets stinky or gets dirty I hand wash it in the utility sink or the bath tub by hand w/ laudry detergent. Then hang it in the sun to dry on the line.
