Does the kind of software you have effect the quality of the footage as it is transfered to the computer? What inexpensive software is the best? I have windows movie maker. I heard that pinnacle 9 is good.
The quality isn't affected as long as you import it in full mini dv resolution. Premiere does this and I'm pretty sure Windows movie maker does too along with many other programs.
Quality in footage is not affected by editing software, though you may be better able to create smoother edits the program this will not affect the captured video quality. The graphics card of a computer though will greatly affect your video quality. Pinnacle is an easy to use and a great buy for around $200, that said I’ve never paid for editing software because I have always gotten it from friends and my school.
