Do you mean like smashing your knee into something, or like tearing your ACL?

im pretty sure she means ligament and menicus damage
just keep your knee strong, strech alot, and dont "try" to fall try to land, thats how i fucked up.

dont get an angry offensive lineman diving at your knee as you're being held up by another angry offensive lineman because you're way too sick for them to block

Agreed... so that means:
#1 strech and exercise reguarly to keep the joints flexible.
#2 have good bindings either look/rossi or line reactors (yes i think she could go with reactors because she's lighter and probably doesn't ride as hard)
#3 make sure your bindings are tuned and working properly. (maybe even list yourself as a "type II" for a lower DIN.
#4 work on slower spins to reduce torque on your legs. Don't do any tricks that are out of your league and stay off sketch jumps.
#5 calcium and protein are your friends.

actually, I'm pretty sure that studies have been coming out showing that unless you are recovering from an injury, using a brace while skiing actually makes your knees weaker and more susceptible to injury. Fortunately, I've never needed a brace so I can't really offer my own opinion.

As my orthopedic surgeon says "a well conditioned leg is the best defense". Girls are actually more susceptible to ACL injuries than guys. DIN setting also doesn't matter as much for ACL injuries. Try to avoid backwards twisting falls, other than that, luck is good.

Are you sure about that DIN not mattering stuff bro? My orthopod recommended tuning my DIN down after I tore my ACL 2 years ago. I mean maybe you're right cause studies might be more current, but i think it would make sense if you popped out more when you fell, your knees would be safer. My DIN on my rossi axial 100's is at 6 now instead of 8 and I haven't had a problem.

Best advice I could give you is to learn how to fall properly... There is a technique to it but if you cased as many jumps as I've had, it'll still wear away at your knees but none being blown out though. When you know you're going to case, don't fight it and suck it up is probobly the best I could suggest for ya.

Actually reactors, or even look/rossi do not prevent ACL tears in anyway. No bindings have an upward releasibilty that makes a differnce as to weather you tear your knee or not. I have been biking and running everyday this summer...just get the muscles around your knees strong.

Never try to "save it". Don't lean back to far and try to bring it back...
when you roll forward just go with it. keep your legs straight.

... then why do we have bindings... and why did i tear my acl when my ski didn't pop off, and i don't tear my acl when my skis do pop off? My friend jon also tore his acl due to a binding that didn't release. In the 14 years that I've been skiing I have yet to see anyone get seriously hurt due to a binding that releases properly. I've seen plenty of broken legs and torn ligaments when the ski stays on.
I think what you're trying to say is that I should bondo my boots to my skis, because it makes no difference and that we should sue line for false advertisement? I know they market for the backward twisting fall, but you're implying that bindings cannot prevent ACL tears.

dont crank your dins up so high that the bindings dont release when you take a huge spill.

instead of an upward release in the toe, the line binding has a lateral release in the heel that will allow the binding to release in a backwards twisting fall. this is the kind of fall that causes acl tears, so yes, the line binding can help to avoid acl tears. other bindings don't have the lateral release in the heel. they only have it in the toe, so they won't help you with a backwards twisting fall.

do aikido or another martial art like judo which does a lot of falls, then when you know your not going to land a jump, you can safely land on your side (works if your going forward or backwards too much) instead of trying to stick out your legs to land.
but i dunno i havent done anything to my legs ( something to my heels though :( ) so i dont know. Im mainly trying to plug my martial art.

i was about to say. since freeskiing puts you in more falling siutations, its better to just fall. when your knee is bent a lot, it is the most susceptable to injury.
also strong legs helps

I was going to say that too. My knee's fucked. Small tears over the years, but no full on tears. So they're just sore all the time. I just hope my left one doesn't go out this year. But switch landings help my knees tons. Or if you twist your ankle or bruise a heel or something and then go skiing, it totally eases the pain landing switch.

set your din like everybody else says to a good number

hey, the best way in my opinion, is to strengthen all the muscles around your knee, so basically everything in your leg, and you could try a supplement called Glucosamine, it is naturally occuring in the body, and is supposed to increase elasticity, and repair cartilage, so It's up to you, i dont believe there are any side effects, I took it and it seemed to work, but who knows it could have been the placebo effect...

Ummm, as for all of you saying lower your din or let your ski come off.... Thats not such a good idea...
Your Din is the most important part of your entire setup... I needs to be set up for your weight and your skiing. If you are super aggressive, you still need high dins, even if you weigh 20lbs.
I sure would rather a torn ACL then having my ski pre-release if i hit a hard patch while straight lining a chute or landing an air at high speeds... That could spell absolute CARNAGE.
To avoid ACL injuries, three things:
1. Proper Bindings, proper DIN
2. Stretch and be in shape
3. Learn to FALL
And, I am not denying the Reactor will help reduce knee injuries, but it will not help if you crank the din... or if you have it too low and pre-release all the time.

Grubix2 - its fucking true you moron. Look at any of the research to date. Some bindings do have upward releasibilty but this does nothing to save your acl in the least bit. This is straight from Vermont Ski Safety, people that spend their whole life researching that kind of stuff. Sorry if youre pissed off but you are wrong.

Jesus, people get heated over anything on here........
anyways.
1. have your bindings set to proper settings, too low and yes you can get hurt from prereleasing, but too high and your knees can get hurt when you skis fail to prerelease.
2. stretch- this is one of the easiest things to do, but i still see very few skiers doing it. the more felxible you are, the more likely you will walk away from falls unhurt.
3 be in god shape- stronger and more flexible joints and muscles will greatly reduce the likelyhood of injury.
4. stay within you r abilities, when you are out of control you will be more likely to get hurt.
5. when you fall, relax, try to get you bearings as soon as you realize you are not going to land and avoid worse possible outcomes. but before you hit ground relax.(think drunk driver)
