All-Purpose Twin

Whatever happened to the all-purpose twin (i.e. a tiwn that can be used on eastern hardpack and in western pow, that can session the park and rip up the mountain)? Seems like all we have left are the head MadTrixx (191) and the Vokl V Pro (190).

Do ski companies really expect everyone to have the money to get a BC twin, a hardpack ski, and a park ski? I ride Line Dragons because I'd rather have one pair of skis that can hanlde almost anything and be able to make a week-long ski trip each year than have three or four skis in my quiver and not be able to travel as much. (hell, I'd rather keep wearing my one-piece suit and get better equipment than to spend $300 on the latest 'fashionable' ski wear and not replace my equipment when it needs it).

yeah, i've been wondering how the v-pro is on hardpack... any eastcoasters use this ski? it looks pretty sweet, and i've heard they are pretty bomber quality. but whats the waist? and is it too wide for easter hardpack/ice?

I haven't had the chance to use the V-Pro, but a few tele guys I speak with love riding it. I don't think the 82mm waist would be too big a deal given that the 1080's have an 80mm waist and Line's park skis (Skogen and Nick) both have 80mm waists (and Line is an east coast company!)

The MadTrixx might be a bit better with a 75 (or is that 72?) mm waist.

along with the madtrix, the v-pro, the new 1080, fs scratch, skogen pro model, and public enemy are good all mountain. Anything with a wider than average waist should be able to meet your needs.

i rode my 1080's for the first time today and i loved em. they ride really nice. good in powder, hardpack, ice and the bumps.

All of Line's skis are too short this year, as are the 1080's. The problem with Motherships, Pocket Rockets, or Public Enemies is that 85+ mm on the waist is too much for the east. I'd rather stick with something between 72 and 80 (making an exception for the 83 on the V-Pros, but even then, a few people have said it may be a little too wide for the east).

yeah, I spend alotta time out west too tho, a month in aspen, and a week in copper. But I live out east, its hard for me to find skis, well this year!

PowAir: They actually rode well on the hardpack? What sort of skiing did you do: all park, or park and mountain? If the fatties work well enough on the eastern pack and ice, then I may get a pair of Karhu Jaks next season.

(the Jaks are a stiffer version of skis like the PR and Mothership, made specifically for free-heelers like myself)

I honestly think life can't get any better when you have the pocket rockets. I'm from michigan and shit gets icy all the time and the PR's still perform good...although in really icy conditions they tend to control me rather than the other way around. but maybe that's just me.

this is my first season riding them and i've been out about 8 times already..once in powder (my god they are fucking amazing in that) and in mushy shit today and icy junk a couple days ago...doesn't get any better for best all around

I really dont get why people ride pocket rockets anywhere east of the rockies, with the exception of a few NE resorts. Okay, I havent ever skied them, but they are a relatively soft ski (right?) and wide, really fucking wide, they werent designed for eastern or midwestern skiing. Still I hear of people who ride them everyday regardless of conditions here in CO?

Anyhow, I finally tried the new 1080s, sweet fucking ski, they really rip up the goods, and they rock on groomers, better than my old 10s. Of course I switched from 169 to 181 so I didnt do real well in the park, but Im guessing it just takes time and practice, I should suck it up anyway and start skiing something longer, Ill become a much better skier that way.

Last Years Volant Machete Huckster is an amazing ski (I'm not sure about this years models, new ownership and models.) This skir rips up the west, fat enough for the deep stuff, yet it can hold an edge on ice (I have used them in Vermont). It is a great ski. The only down side is they are pretty heavy so they ride a little bulky when in the park, but if you are looking for versatility, get this ski.

I believe the Mothership is stiffer than the PR. I know the Karhu Jak is (the Jak was built by the same guy that did the Mothership - just stiffer). From what I hear, due to Karhu's influence, the Mothership will be stiffer next year.

I don't think my Dragons will make it past this year (I got them at an end-of-season sale two years ago), so I want to be prepared to nab replacement skis in the summer - hopefully also on sale.

_ski bum_ has got it, the older volant hucksters were amazing on the ice and in bc conditions. they tore up the park too. they really did kick some ass, its a shame volant's skis aren't more widely sold and accepted.

gregg: i ski everything, i used my friends for a run last week and i was like wow this things own. they held better than my pow airs do on the ice. i dindt get a chace to take them in the park b/c loons wasnt up last week....although i did hit a kicker that we made and was spinning threes on them no problem. as soonas the snow comes ill be able to ride them a bit more assuming my friend lets me. hope that helps

i demoed a v-pro last year. solid wood core. they work good in the east. they feel like driving a hummer through the iraki back-country at mach 5. they go through anything
