helmets are not fun to wear, they make me feel top heavy, and goofy. so if iam forced to wear a silly plastic dome piece i have a shell that only looks like a helmet.

i dont get why it matters to you guys so much that others dont wear helmets, theres millions of people that dont, and to be truthful 35 people a year in skiing dieing is not a lot at all, considering most of them are people that dont know how to ski and crash into trees

make you feel top-heavy? you must weigh 100 lbs and be 6' tall if a 380 gram helmet makes you feel top-heavy (that's the weight of the Giro Nine.9).
oh, and helmets are slightly cheaper than death.

That may be true, but those 35 accidents could be avoided if they were wearing a helmet. maybe some of them were and they were just really bad falls, but the others that werent may have been preventable

That's a good idea...wait until your brain is mush, then say...uh, maybe I should get a helmet. That's like saying "I'll wait until I get an STD to use a condom", "I'll buckle my seatbelt once I've got one good wreck under my belt", do you see where this is going. My point is if you are doing something that makes you think you might be going Fast/big enough to seriously injure the part of your body that makes the rest work, you might want to contemplate a helmet...while you can still contemplate stuff. I don't always wear a helmet, and never wear a mouthguard, but this next season I am wearing a helmet most if not all the time, and keeping the moughguard in my pocket incase I am feeling crazy. $2,000 spent on saving a single tooth(no dental insurance) only to find 6 months later is has to be pulled makes you think about something to protect your teeth.
Phrosty, obviously you have you mind made up, and good for you. You know how to think for yourself. Enjoy it, this season could be your last chance to do that. Arrogance leads to injury most of the time. Good luck, unless you take your own advice and wrap yourself in bubble wrap, and sit in your room.

actually, 3 people died at my home resort last year, i actually saw a guy right under the lift, in a big area of red snow, being taken away by ski patrol, he died in the hospital later...so i wear my helmet

Helmet's are good and can definitely prevent head injuries, but does that mean I'm an "idiot" if I choose to sometimes ski without one?
Do you know how many people die of head injuries in car accidents? Do any of you wear a helmet every time you get in a car? If not you must all be "juvenile idiots", right?
By all means, wear your helmets, but until I see you roll up to the hill in your car sporting a full-face Bell, then keep a sense of perspective when some of us go skiing without one.

In case it isn't blindingly obvious, thousands of people that wear their seatbelts still die of head injuries from car accidents, fool.

in case it is not blindingly obvious....100x more would die without seatbelts...so whats your point?
Do you want to strech you assumption that you can never be 100% safe so why bother being safe at all?
hmm...good question - Why wear a helmet at all if it only protects you most of the time???

Read my first post buddy, I said that wearing helmets is a good idea, and I support it. The point I was trying to make is that you could just as easlily use the arguments in this thread to create a helmet law for driving cars, surfing, gymnastics, or countless other activities where head injuries can and do occur. I prefer to leave it as a matter of choice. I wear a helmet lots of the time, but I also like to have the option of not wearing one when I feel it's appropriate. If too many of these statements about how anyone skiing without a helmet is an idiot start to get bought into, then there will be a helmet law at all ski hills soon, and who knows how long it will take for helmet companies to start lobbying governments for the helmet law while driving. It becomes an issue about taking responsibility for yourself, and allowing others the freedom to do the same.

^^there are vehicle saftey laws in place...crash zones, air bags, restraint systems etc...ALL race organizations require helmets as well.
In skiing there has been a recent move to require helmets for all skiers under a certain age. This move has the support of various national ski organizations and some major resorts.
I think of it the same way as a child seat belt law...make it required and quit worrying about "personal choice"....because some people make bad "personal choices" and the resulting injuries hurt the ski resort, ski inudstry and tax payers

Unfortunately it is logic like this that has rendered so many backcountry areas inaccesable, and could very easily shut down terrain parks. If we do as you say and "quit worrying about personal choice" because some people make bad ones, we basically adopt the position of; "Oh poor little stupid me, I'm much too useless to look out for myself, would the government please tell me what to do so that I don't get hurt."
Face it, life involves countless risks. I feel that you are better prepared for these risks if you take responsibility for yourself and your actions.

BC access is an entirely different issue...
I believe that in many cases BC should be restricted to those who know what they are doing...I support mountains that set up control gates and require BC skiers to have full avy gear and would also support a reuirement to take an avy I course before being allowed OB...I say this because my resort Alpine Meadows has become overun with neo-back country skiers that have zero clue and zero respect...I am tired of having to go on late night search and rescues for some 16 year old shithead who "got lost"...
Just my opinion...but I would be happy to see patrol not denying BC but encouraging skiers to be safe and know what they are doing....
same can be said in the park...logical extension would be to enforce proper etiquitte and saftey in terrain parks...I have landed on enough gapers to know that the new influx of skiers into terrain parks cause crazy saftey issues to good skiers...
Maybe being asked to wear a helmet aint so bad, is it?

Your view on BC..... "I would be happy to see patrol not denying BC but encouraging skiers to be safe and know what they are doing" is similar to how I feel about helmet laws.
Encourage them yes, make it law no. No amount of safety rules and regulations are a substitute for personal responsibility and intelligent decisions.
Back to the car analogy, I have had friends die in car crashes of head trauma (with seat belts on). Helmets might have saved their lives, but so would different choices. I drive my car without a helmet, but I try to make smart choices behind the wheel.
If I am taking what I feel to be significant risks on skis I will wear a helmet, but sometimes I cruise around without one. Of course I know that in the event of incurring head trauma I am less protected, but the choice is mine to make, and I think that having that choice is a very important thing.

Most things doctors can fix when it is damaged...you mush (brain) is not one of them...Helmets keep you nice and warm...they have headphones in them...and they protect you during a major crash there really is not a good reason to not wear a helmet...I almost always wear one and I have seen people who would have been in deep shit if they had not had one on...I will admit that when I ski spring bumps and it is warm out and the snow is nice a soft I don't wear the helmet...but any other time if I am jumping or flying down a run I wear one...if you don't good for you...maybe people will start to think skiing is really dangerous since all these people are brain dead from crashes and the hill will be less crowded...now that would be great
