You know as much as i hate liberal freaks that dont seem to sympathize with victims of 9/11 and dont endorse the eye for an eye idea as i do, i still have to laugh. i love bush, but man he is out to kill...its hilarious reading the headlines cause he seriously is itching to the bone to go to war with saddam. ever move the iraq take seems to be a reason to bomb the hell out of them. its great. if they scratch their backs bush thinks they are signaling an attack on the world. its pretty funny. go bush.

Phrosty my post wasn't geared towards the ski industry that was but mearly an example I chose that I figured you could relate to but I guess not. Life is full of battles and your comment made me think that you would blame your short comings on others rather then yourself. I figured taking an example from skiing would have been a good idea but I guess not. How about this,

I get into college based on the work I did in hs and what I learned. Not because someone else has it out for me. But whatever you can continue to say that people like me shouldn't be in the industry all you want but the fact of the matter is that had nothing to do with my post.

I think Bush is a friggin nutjob. He is trying to go to war with all these dictators, but in a way, isn't he being a dictator by bossing around all these countries. Noone is gunna touch the US neway cause they got enough firepower to blow the world to smitheriens. And the main problem is that bush is gunna have to rebuild all the friggen countries that he bombes. America is in economic downtimes so how is he gunna do that?

yes, on the surface it was 500 votes, but if u dig deeper and find out what really happened u notice that over 8000 black floridians had their vote taken away. why u ask? well, some were suspected of comitting felonies.. yes, suspected. others had names similar to those that were suspected of comitting felonies.. so their vote was taken away as well.. 8000 black voters - typically being more liberal than conservative.. that translates into the election being won by gore. democracy at it's finest!

one of the reasons that all those middle-east ppl hate westerners is because america controls more of the worlds wealth than any other country. So while the westerners are all peachy in their expensive homes, the arabics are all in the worst poverty on earth. So maybe thats why they turn to terrorism? Maybe those Arabics think that were hogging all the wealth? which reminds me, i heard on the news that bush is wantin to control iraq so bad because they have LOTS of oil, and he wants it for more $$ Dont get me wrong im not a pro arab, i just herd my teacher lecture us on that stuff.

I hate the democratic party more then i hate the republicans but I hate them both. They all seem the same. Im not going to get in an argument with anyone in the thread though cause I really dont care at all. Dont call me misinformed either becuase I follow the news closely and dont base my opinions on what the media tells me. thats how the world works, sure its not fair, but thats how it goes. powerful people are always going to take advantage of the less powerful thats how the system works and if you are powerful (america) you use the power you already have to increase your power elsewhere (middle east). Who here likes to go skiing? I do. Who here doesnt already have tonnes of money so that skiing is easily affordable? Not me. KYOTO is not good. But keep thinking it is, until 10 yrs from now youll slap yourself in the face. Kyoto sounds good on paper. That is it. Saving the environment is good and all, but it really isnt as easy as the protocol would make it seem. Im sorry, but I seriously can not see how any one can be for it if they knew more about it and the implications it would have on there lives. It will cost approximately 1.65 billion dollars alone to implement it. Thats just to implement it! Not the reprucutions it has.

Not only is this protocol stupid economically, but if you really look at it, it doesnt do much for the environment. Believe it or not the Earth would be warming either way. We are still coming out of the last ice age, some 20000 thousand yrs ago and if you look at the earths timeline that is a relatively short period. Not only this, but Kyoto only really covers CO2, which is already naturally occuring, and is actually beneficial to life- photosynthesis maybe. It doesnt cover a lot of other harmful chemicals and such.

Not only this but there is actually a credit system that comes with it. So lets say a company produces more than the protocol calls for. They are allowed to go over to France and borrow credits that allows them to pollute cause they dont pollute as much there.

I can explain more if needed.

kyoto speaks to ALL greenhouse gases, it just so happens that CO2 accounts for 99% of them. as for the argument pertaining to climate change not being affected by humans -> yes, it is possible to use data to show this, but it's also possible to use much more relevant date to prove otherwise. i don't even want to get into the arguments about the economic impact of kyoto --- except to say that it's all speculation.

Sim, the US military budget for 2003 will be 396 billion dollars, a 48 B increase. I daresay that some money can be spent saving the world, rather than just saving the US with military and 'homeland security!'

with much of the developed world vowing to implement the kyoto protocol, a emissions trading system - the one that sims was talking about - will develop in order for nations to sell off extra pollution, or vice versa. with this trading system, billions of dollars will go around, and the united states vow to stay out of the protocol means they won't have any participation in the trading. this puts them at an economic disadvantage to the nations involved with kyoto.

oh god. kyoto... blah. on a global scale kyoto means shit. on a local scale it's helpful. Bascially CO2 is responsible for 2% of the greenhouse effect. water vapour being the other 98%. we're in a cycle now where the earth is heating, heating reduces the amount of CO2 the ocean can store so there is more in the air. so really in the end global warming makes CO2 rise more so than CO2 contributes to global warming. thus Kyoto is shit and will only hinder developing countries. I just finished an essay on shit like this can ya tell?. fuck anyway you can use stats to prove anything.

see, i disagree.. i see where you're coming from and i too have just finished an entire semester that more or less revolved around the protocol, but as i see it, with kyoto being implemented, this is the first step towards a sustainable growth economy. i dunno if you're familiar with econology, but it's the practice of creating an economy that is both ecologically and socially sound. you can't begin to tackle issues of ecology without at the same time dealing with social issues.

as for developing nations, kyoto won't cripple their economies. what has to be done in order for them to thrive is the free flow of capital in order for small businesses to start up. there is a program in india called myrada - it's a brokerage firm that works with regional banks that deals money to entrepreneurs. while efforts like these are not common practice as of yet, someday soon it is hoped that they will be. i've got tonnes more of this info if you're interested. (again, it's only one side to the issue though)

8000 out of 300 000 000 people account for um..... much less than 1% of the population. if you're talking about statistics, .000026% means absolutely diddly squat. so no more excuses about not voting, it's something that we are very privileged to do (freedom and democracy being these privileges).

oh i also agree with kyoto being a must. but the government have no means to the end. they just set a target for 2012 with no strategy to meet it. it makes no sense to cripple industries by making companies meet a goal with no plan to get there. just being realistic. i'm totally for kyoto.

it's not 8000 votes out of the whole population. it's that 8000 votes were taken away in an election where it came down to 500 votes.


And yeah. I see where you're coming from too with kyoto debate. I just feel that there are issues that have as much if not more importance than greenhouse gas emissions.

I haven't researched it yet, but i believe there were a lot of votes thrown out from overseas military personnel, which tend to be strongly republican, so you can make the same argument either way. Point being, voting does make a difference, maybe not in your state over the last 50 years or ever, but how many people in Dade County county in FL that decided the election by 500 votes, for those in Canada, NZ, etc. that may not know thought that before the last election? They probably wished they would have voted.

overseas vote statistics:

2490 total
344 had no evidence that they were cast on, or before voting day
183 were postmarked in the US
96 lacked appropriate witness info
169 came from either unregistered voters, had envelopes that weren't signed properly, or came from people who hadn't registered a ballot
5 ballots came after the nov 17th deadline
19 overseas voters voted on 2 ballots - and both were counted.

all the above ballots violated florida law, yet they were all counted. again, democracy at its finest!

Im all for Kyoto Protocol too- if it wasnt retarded. It seems you are smart and all sweetcoz, but the way I see it the credit system doesnt make sense and will most definetly hurt economy, especially in Alberta. And believe me the rest of Canada will feel it too. With the system, a big company can buy credit to pollute, therefore, not polluting less. However, this will make running there plant (lets say) more expensive. Now why would a company want to stay in Alberta if they can move to the States and do business cheaper. Or for the ones that are already in Alberta and cant just move, they wont be able to compete with others that can offer products and energy cheaper, therefore, losing money and maybe going broke. Goodbye jobs, goodbye industry and goodbye relatively cheap fuel costs.

Now im not sure of all the pollutants that Kyoto covers, but according to Harpers opening speech, not as many as should be. Either way, about CO2:
It has gone up 5% since we came to be. Now 2/3 of the countrys that are causing this increase already have nothing to do with Kyoto. Some big ones being US, Austrailia, India and China. This leaves improvement for a whooping 1.6 percent. And its not like all these countries are going to stop producing CO2 altogether. I dont know what the parameters are on exactly how much reduction they want, but im guessing that it wouldnt be more than 50%. So they might be able to reduce CO2 emmisions by maybe 0.8 percent.

Statistics do lie, but this is more or less common sense.

voting doesn't matter a few years ago the people of california voted to stop giving free health care to illegal aliens, but the couts deemed it unconstituional or some bull shit like that and they reversed the vote/law.

ECFS Attitash, you've got a point. and every one has different oppinions. i was just giving a reason why they hate us. As for kyoto, its bad for the economy, but good for the environment. this is the worst winter here in the kootenays that ive ever seen, theres not even any snow on the ground! I dont know if this is because of global warming(pollution) or something else. but i think kyoto is a good thing for the long run.

The way I look at it is people have their own opinions on such topics as this. You have yours and I have mine, debating is not going to change either of our views.

Yes we could use statistics but statistics can be swayed and used however one seems fitted.

It's all relative, just let it be.

I personally feel that Bush is doing what needed to be done a long time ago. While he is making some poor decisions, I praise him for taking initiative where others have not.

But that is just my own sediments, I am not going to try shoving it down your throat.

ok, well u can say what u want about the economics of it - but i think in the end it boils down to this: our consumption will soon outweigh our production -> so one would logically think that our consumption needs to be curbed. kyoto is a first step to this required end.

No Kyoto is a step in the right direction if it werent so retarded. Something a lot of you fail to see is that it is a lot easier to say we need to help the environment than actually do it. Most people hear that Kyoto is about saving the environment and go yaaaaaaaaaa I like the environment and I want to save it, so I like Kyoto, but dont even give a second thought to what it actually takes.

This may come as a surprise to you, but we dont actually use US dollars here so to us its still worth 2 billion. Was the fact that its in Cnd dollars suppose to make it less significant? Ya and you know 2 billion dollars really isnt much. I mean why not just start to throw money around it doesnt come out of the taxpayers pocket or anything. Oh and I think i mentioned thats just to implement it (its a good thing you messaged me cause now I actually know what it means) let alone the reprecutions of the actual parameters it sets. This number would be huge. But I guess if its in Cnd dollars it doesnt really matter.

While we are at it GDP doesnt mean money the government just has sitting there. It is the money they make. And since the government is the people it is actually the peoples money and should be given back to them (in various forms). I really dont think that people just want their money thrown in the toilet. Those trillions that the US government 'makes' is just what they make and doesnt factor out yet what is spent of that. I guarantee that there is better things to spend it on than some dumbass accord as in Canadas case, who by the way, doesnt have near the size of GDP the States have.

Shall I expect another message asking me my age or maturity level?

revenues: $178.6 billion
expenditures: $161.4 billion

seems like there is still plenty of cash left over (161.4 + 2 = 163.4) and the major losses would be in the industrial sector, not in the general productivity of the population or whatever you were arguing earlier...oh and you still havent answered my question.

I just said it in my other post too but there is a difference between knowledge and intelligence. You have knowledge- or you just went and looked it up somewhere- doesnt really matter. Either way numbers dont explain a lot especially these. I realize that we obviously make more than we spend, but like I just said, these numbers dont show much. For instance in what areas and where was this money spent? I would be interested if you can find it. Does this take in account the fact that we have to pay off a huge deficiet? Does it factor in all the money spent on social programs? I would like to know.

What you dont see is that the governments money is actually our money. That 2 billion comes directly out of our pockets. And yes while the Kyoto parameters would hit industry gets who takes the end blow. Us as the consumers. And like I already said why would anyone in their right mind want to spend money on a program/protocol that makes us lose even more money. To me it is unfathomable as to why anyone who actually enjoys their current quality of life would be for Kyoto. Environmentalists maybe, but do they not also drive their cars or heat their homes. If they were true environmentalists should they not be living out among the trees?
