internet filesharing, why isn't it stealing?

i have a debate on the subject of internet filesharing programs like napster (rip) kazaa and winmx and all those sort of programs where people can download music off other users comps without paying anyone like artists or record companies... anyways i'm looking for some points of view on why it couldn't be considered stealing in some cases, i have found plenty POV's saying it is but i know there must be some reasons since millions of people do it everyday... little help please?

This wont help you to much but I only feel like I am stealing something if i d/l a whole cd and burn it because for lots of the stuff I have on my computer I wouldnt have bought the cd either way. Or like Round Room by phish is on kazaa right now and i downloaded it and burned it for all my friends but we also all preordered the album from phish its just this is a week earlier and I want to hear it. I think that people that never buy cds and download full cds and stuff I see that as stealing after a certain point. I dont think its wrong cause Im poor and I do it so wahtever.

Techinically it is theft. But noone can stop it, nor can they charge everyone who does it with theft, because you'd be imprisoning a majority of this country.

sure it is stealing but laws are different in various countries so a lot of the trading is done out of many jurisdictions of law enforcement. the whole world would have to crack down on trading programs to be effective.

Yes it is stealing, but eveyrone does it and the fact remains that we don't get punished for it. except for those cadets at Annapolis, 100 of them who were found with downloaded music on their computers, they were expelled. but i think that was because they had music casue they werent' allowed to, i don't know.

Its not physically stealing, however, it is against copywrite law. You aren't stealing something physical, you just happen to have a bunch of 1's and 0's on your Hard Drive. Its exactly the same as the 'Taping Music is Destroying the Music Industry' campaign that went around in the 70's.

It is stealing but the record companies shouldn't exist in the first place. the bands should get the profit for their work. the bands make like less than half than what the cd sells for. besides it is entertainment for fucks sake-not something that actually should matter that much

morally it's stealing, technically it's copywrite infringement. there's no doubt and if you're going to try and argue otherwise you'll never win. the only thing you can say is the user is 'sampling' music. which for the most part is bullshit and everyone knows it.

music is intellectual property. i justify taking these files without paying for them by supporting the artists by also buying the cd (if i liked enough of he songs) or going to their concerts, or telling other people about them. i think file sharing programs serve to help music other than pop, because people can check out what it is they want to listen to before they actually go and pay hard earned money for something. it's kind of like darwinism for music.. artists that produce music that is actually worth buying, should hypothetically gain through these things.. i guess i'm assuming that people don't just dl the entire albums.. but whatever, it's inevitable.. ahh!

Yeah it is 'stealing' (andy dont start), but think about it, how much does it cost to create a cd? Less than a dollar. How much does it cost to buy a cd? Rarely (other than walmart, kmart, etc...) will you find any cd under $12, at the very least! That seems like stealing to me, I own well over 100 cd's that I've bought, I feel that the record companies have stolen enough from me!

If a cd is good, or a certain band is worthwhile than I will likely buy the cd. However, I rarely buy cd's other than at concerts, when you buy a cd at a concert much much more of the money is given to the band, rather than the recording industry. (Someone may have pointed that out already, but I didnt have time to read all of the threads).

If its a good cd buy it, support the bands. If theres one good song, download it.

I consider it taste testing. I D/L some!!!! and if I like, I buy. Most bands I like, I've found on the net. It is a great tool if the listeners care. Fuck pop! I don't care what happens to them but I'd like to think that the type of people that listen to good music also have good morals. I think music is a good judge of character!

I never bought much music before filesharing came around, (and before that chat servers on AOL *shudder*) but now it seems that I buy more than ever, considering that owning a CD thats high quality really does beat an unequalized CD-R, which doesnt even work in some music players... I still burn a whole lot though, especially for listening on car trips.

I probably own 20-30 music CD's all bought withing the last year, and I probably burned 50-60 CD's in the last year.
