Is it dangerous to sleep in your car overnight if you can't afford a hotel? I'm talking about if there's an actual snow storm and stuff. would i freeze to death or run out of oxygen? also do cops at resorts kick you out of the parking lot if they catch you sleeping in your car?
I used to do it in vail all the time.. I lived in boulder and worked in vail on Sat... I'd want to stay up there and ski Sunday and skip class to ski monday....
if I couldn't get ahold of any of my friends that lived up there I'd either sleep in my car which always kinda sucked... or alot of times if I couldn't find a girl to hook up with I'd sneek into a fancy ass hotel and sleep on the huge leather couches in the loby.. plus free continental breakfast!!!
yeah dude sleeping in your car is fine. if you can do it try to remove all the seats and get a mummy sleeping bag if possible. a cheap portable tv ($20?) is also a good idea to kill time.
i used to sleep in south lake tahoe every weekend. a good place to sleep is near the "Y" where all the car dealers are. go to the back of one of them (i think near the toyota one?) and simply park your car there. your car won't look out of place there plus no one really goes back there.
another place is in the shopping center near Harrahs or any one of the casino parking lots.
also you can sleep in Kirkwood's parking lot near the employee housing.
One sleeping bag will suffice, provided that it's a -30 degree winter camping monster (and those are expensive). Otherwise use two lighter weight ones.
You can't go wrong by hooking up with a lonely resort chick, but I think the term "lonely resort chick" is a bit of an oxymoron. There really aren't any due to the laws of supply and demand. Most resorts have plenty of demand but the supply can be hard to come by. Tourist chicks looking for a good time might provide a happier hunting ground.
Finally, it comes down to your choice of cars. I used to have a VW camper van w/ auxillary heat. It was sweet and I could fire up the stove and cook breakfast every morning. The key here was auxillary heat because those vans are damn cold. I friend of mine lived in the A Basin parking lot for 3 winters in his van - a Dodge or something. Once again, auxillary heat (propane).
If you don't have a van, then hopefully you have a station wagon or something so you can lie down, that's key. Sleeping in a car with only seats that go flat sucks. It's all about being able to stretch out and relax.
I love sleeping in my car. I bought a -20 degree bag which keeps me plenty warm even when it's really cold out. Resorts usually will say whether or not yo can sleep in the parking lot. The resort I ski started charging 10 dollars a night so we set up camp elsewhere which turned out to be a blessing. We started sleeping down the road at Walmart where they actually encourage it. It's awesome because you can go play video games and watch movies at night for something to do. Also in the morning you can get up early and get cheap ass breakfast at the backery. Walmart is the ticket.
drove 5 hours to mammoth and got there at 3 in the morning, slept in the car, woke up to one of the best pow days of the season. Find a parking garage at a hotel, they're a little warmer, and if it's snowing you won't get snowed in.
do not keep your car running. two people died in their car this winter doing that. also crack a window because the humidity of your breath will frost up all the inside windows and it will be a bitch when you have to drive in the morning.
