i got issues...besides my mental ones i need someone to help me mkae out all the Jibrish of specs on bikes....
Problem 1: are these to bikes even the same type?
Problem 2: im gonna go by what the dude a tthe shop said that the kona is better but what exactly is better about it..
Problem 3: for 50 bucks more am i really getting that much better of a bike...the specialized is 600 and the kona is 650
disregard any of this if the bikes aren't the same type..
any other imput u have would be great...thanx

Specialized is a really good company when it comes to warranty problems. If anything goes wrong they will most likely replace. I have a big hit and i snapped my frame doing an 8 foot drop and they replaced it for free.

The specialized link just took me to the home page so I don't know which ride you were scoping. If its the p series and the around the same price the bikes are pretty much the same. buy the one you think is prettiest. KONA

No don't go with a kona, or kona shred. First of all the dirt jam fork has the interals that are just a little bit better then a crosscountry fork, that is shit. Second the brake system is brutal, roters and calibers. My friend owns this bike, and its just brutal, plus its over priced for what it's worth.
I reconmend a cannondale chase, or jamis komoda fx, or the brodie series. Those three companies have very good pricing, and good bikes.

i dont know abnout you but i usually dont like hardtails withs lots of travel in the fork, and anyway im sure you can change the brake system for a fairley small amount,

Are you fucking serious, it will cost at least 200$ to chance a mechanical brake system, so there you go. Don't buy that bike, when you can spend more on a better one, or less on a better one.
And yes the Norco shorline hardtails are deadly also. I love my travel in my forks.

Go with the Kona because they're not only reliable but the geometry on the bike seems more of what you're looking for with what you want to do with it.

Do you even know what your talking about? The half forks are for XC or freestyle too, and there pretty light too. Cedric Gracia uses them, don't fuck around with Cedric Grasia.

buy a used bike from someone who knows what they're talking about/ does the same kind of riding as you. that way it usually comes set up correctly.
plus, it is usually TONS cheaper. like less than half of retail.

He only uses lefty's in downhill races like Sea Otter and 4 cross races because they're nice forks just not wicked durable to take a major beating. That's the only downfall of them.

if it comes down beween those 2 bikes then definately get the shred! it will be a lot better of a freeride bike than the hardrock! if you have other options look to specialized p series and get a p-2 or p-3

dude, i've ridden hardrock and was NOT impressed. Also though, they're different bikes. Hardrock from what I've seen really isn't a freeride bike, it's just an entry level bike for the person who doesn't quite know what he's into. (entry level meaning it's kinda the low-end of anything worth riding vs. lowend meaning huffy) I don't know much about the kona, but kona's a core brand and I think you'd be better off with that bike, especially if your looking into getting into fr. Check out e-bay for a deal, and consider spending a little more $$$; for bikes, it really makes the difference.

Anyways on to the subject at hand, i have personally never really liked the Kona's because your paying more for their name and they dont make that great of a bike to back it up. First of all you dont want that much travel on a hardtail, but you want that travel to work well and be very strong. the dirt jam is not going to hold up to serious dj or urban. i dont know what specialized your looking at but im assuming its a p series bike. the p1 is nothing spectacular, but its still better then the kona. the p2 and p3 are amazing bikes. They will hold up to anything you can throw at them. Next in line would be any bike from the Cannondale Chase series. dont listen to any shit people say about these bikes, because ive sold them and i havent had any complaints. your best bet is a p2 or chase 2, if u cant afford those decide between the chase 3 and p1.

i still say you look at the giant stp. i've ridden a lot of bikes and this is by far my favorite hardtail I've ever ridden (for anything except epic cross country). Plus, it can be set up for anything. It's beefy as fuck. My dad ran it onto our garage and ruined my fox fork, and rear wheel amung other things but there was not a scratch on the frame. Other frames would've folded under that kind of damage. If you get the middle priced model from last year you will get a better deal, the same frame as the nicer one, and decent parts too.

dude, i built up a fuckin burly Mountain Cycle Rumble for 800. 8 inch avid juicy 5s, SRAM x7 drivetrain, Race face prodigy DH crankset, a DJ III and a Jr T, and it fuckin rips harder than any bike ive ridden. and ive ridden alot of high end bikes. i absolutely love that thing. if you spen some time researching the industry, get a feel for the diff. companies, and in the spring, build up your own bike. if you can snag a deal on a slightly used frame like my MC, you can build rediculous bikes for super cheap.
