how about the media in general? music is a microcosm of the influence that media holds. T.V. and movies tell us all what to look like, how to act and feel. it's bullshit.
Music doesn't influence as much as television and movies and visuals. We don't necesarrily talk or speak the words that we listen to but are more likely to copy their appearance and visual style.
Personally I think that because we live in well developed nations (Canada and US mostly), we cannot get away from movies and tv. How can you say they aren't part of culture when I would estimate 7 out of 8 people either watch tv or see a movie on a weekly basis? No matter how hard you try to avoid tv or film, even if you don't watch them directly, you will ultimately somehow be influenced by them. For example, if you travel on a highway to a job every day, you will pass a billboard that is advertising either some new tv show or a new movie that is to premier soon.
Out of every medium of media, tv is almost definitely the most paid attention to. Even if it is subconcious, you will probably see something and try to emulate it, even if it is a very small habit or a slightly different style. So, I stick by my original post. No matter what you do, you will in some way be influenced by tv and media, and to say they aren't part of culture really isn't true anymore.
