How to patch a pair of ski pants?

I was standing around a bonfire last year and the shell or outer layer of my ski pants melted. It is a good sized hole. The hole has gotten bigger and bigger as I have wore the pants and I need to fix this. I need to ask you guys, what would be the best method of patching this? Please don't tell me to buy a new pair of pants I can't afford that right now. The pants are still wearable and are in relativly new good condition aside from the hole, they are still warm, but I do need to patch and prevent this hole from getting any larger. I have tried duct-tape but it just comes off. Help???

get a really tough fabric and sow it in behind the rest of the pant

Take A big piece of denim and slap it on and sew it. Simple really.

Sit there look at the pant for a long long time and wish on a star that it magically patches itself.
