The original concept is dead. There are a few outfits still plugging away, but they're far and few between.
Now punk is a competition on who can put the most studs on their clothes and have the ugliest mohawk. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, but punk is exactly the opposite of caring about your image.
its not even almost dead if you know some decent bands still exist. and while I do like those bands^, i think he was talking about their "street punk" image that was killing punk. but punk isnt about how you look or even if you care that you look that way, there is much more to it.
I have been listening to a shittload of garage punk latley. check out New Bomb Turks and Million Dollar Marxists.
punk will always have a place in my heart. everytime i listen to punk, i remember when i was 15/16, smokin drugs, rebellious, goin' downtown and getting drunk, hit up parties every fuckin' night. good times man, good times.
umm, those are mostly decent, but I definatly wouldnt use them as examples of how punk is still in its true form. lawrence arms is pop-punk, and what most people think of as pop-punk and what you mean when you say pop-punk is actually just pop/rock.
bitch bitch bitch. if it sucks don't listen, there ya go. if you're sad because you think it's dead, start a punk band. If you are happy about everything punch yourself in the face.
I really never understood the support your whole scene thing, I just chill and listen to music that sounds good. Anti-flag is decent and Street dogs are ok, but punk is just shitty to listen to. Listen to like some shitty liberal talk show on NPR and you'll get the same thing out of it. I listen to music because it grooves or takes talent, not to hear people that can't sing that I could shred on guitar whine about the government. Because honestly they all bitch about our government, but look at them. This world would be in utter chaos if they were in charge. They can't handle their own clothing and faces, or their lives much less anything else/
how did i know that someone would mention "emo" somewhere in this thread? haha. of course.. what else could be expected?
Phrosty had the most worthwhile comment.
If you think that a type of music sucks, DON'T LISTEN TO IT. it's that fucking simple. every thread about music has to turn into an all out bash on 'emo' or 'punk' or whatever someone else happens to mention that they like at a particular point in time. damn, get over it already. it's personal preference.. there are no facts when your talking about someone's choice.
yes, and i still dont see why that is a problem. I like to know what a band may sound like (other bands and so on) and I dont have a problem with that limiting me to generes. I even like some emo, but im not going to deny its emo and so "oh its just music and if you like it then it doesnt matter!" because that is just fucking stupid.
as for your arguement about Leftover Crack, your very right, and I also hear your point on the LAwerence Arms.
anathema, what do you listen to know that you have 'all grown up'?
Support your scene, go to shows, make a company and put on shows, keep it alive, don;t support shitty bands, never buy cds from a store, only from the band, beat up emo kids, and laugh and dudes wearing girls pants with their hair over one eye thinking they are complex.
Shut the fuck out all you motherfucker rappers. Punk is alive, its just that hip hop is invading the radio and the television.
I am pround to be punk and I got a lot a friends to prove it.Now take your money/bling stupid thoughts out of your steriotypical head and never post crap like this AGAIN!
kanye west is mainstream, but i think he puts alot of thought into his music. hip hop takes quite a long time to produce. who cares if they are core or not. underground or on MTV, if the hip hop has good beat and flow, its likeble for the same reasons punk is. not everyone listens to punk music just for the lyrics about the shitty government or whatever. to me its more about the vibe and feel you get from the music.
i do believe both hip hop and punk styles of music put alot of thought into their music. "core" hip hop isnt that much different than the "mainstream" anyways. mainstream is alot the same, its just out and popular right now. snoop's still rapping about the same shit he did in '95. pussy and stickey. and he gets it to rhyme, where punk really doesnt put any thought into rhyming.
so to justify hip hop being shit is harder than you think. its easier in my opinion to call punk shit than hip hop, and i like both styles of music. its all about a certain problem with something. kids dont listen to it because they identify with it. my friend joel doesnt think hes in south central when he drives his 2000 oldsmobile alero with subs. it just what puts out that vibe to entertain. music is entertainment, and i think hip hop does a very good job of that. it isnt "crap" on the radio in any aspect of the word.
skogenjake: I respectfully disagree with the part about mainstream being similar to the "underground" or "core" hip hop. To my ears, the "underground" stuff has more bite, it's more intense, has more intricate rhymes, etc. The mainstream stuff seems watered down to me, but again, that's just me.
To whoever: As far as punk goes, punk was an attitude and behavior of non-conformity (of various types: political, theological, etc.), hence my first post. It's become some trend, which is natural I think, so think of it what you will. Once people realize there's money to be made on something and they take the effort to popularize it, it generally loses at least some of its artistic credibility, IMO. And this is why I think the original concept of punk, in it's original form, is dead.
Are there still good punk bands? Sure. But that raw extremity of early punk can't be replicated, nor should it be.
Final point: Things (punk, for example) are meant to die. They change and alter and eventually the original concept gets forgotten. That just seems to be the way things work. It's not inherently wrong, it's just the way it is.
Oh yeah, another reason things change, especially with music, is that they're reflective of the times, like art or architecture. As society and art (music included) move forward, the change together. It's pretty cool actually.
^yes i can definatly agree to that, punk having its huge uproar in the 80s. It's just sad when i ask people who portray a punk image what they're listening to and it isn't true punk rock. That is why punk is dead.
people try to act all philosophical with this shit when people have been saying it since glenn danzig left the misfits...youre about 15 years late, because punk has been dead ever since nofx decided they considered themselves part of the genre.
its dead, but its far from forgotten...pick up static age by the misfits, bad habits by the monks, or inflammable material to see what i mean.
oh, and there was a small ressurection of true stooges era gritty true punk back in 2001 with the richmond sluts, who sound to be straight out of 1979, but theyve moved on. every once in a while someone will make a good ressurection, but it cant be done by one band. so well just let it rest in peace.
OMG I made a mistake in what I wanted to say. Im really sorry, I meant that I have a lot of punk friends and not I am proving myself to be a punk. That was my argument to say that punk isnt dead.
From now on Im going to read over my posts....
punk is awesome, since about 1/4 of you know what your talking about bugs the piss out of me. punk is punk. everyone tries to imitate it with out knowing what it is. same with checkered stuff and ska, kevin from vans loved 2tone(ska) so he introduced checkered clothing and shoes. skaters that like punk and ska wore such clothes in the 90's which moved it to the masses, now i see emo kids with a checkered back pack and a patch that says "the used" screw that. ska and punk keep it real. studded belts, who were the first the wear those oh yea punks, now everyone wears them. spiked hair started by punks now if its the normal hair cut. i think its lame with these kids saying "punk is gay" when punk surronds their life and social life. punk is very much alive, but just waiting for so many trendy cunts to stop ripping of them. and i still think emo sucks(i just had to put that in there)
^^^ haha very well said (all of it) another great example is the mesh hat...3 years ago if you were a mesh hat you were considered a 'skater', white trash, or a redneck...now you can walk into abercrombie, j. crew, and other similar stores and find tons of different mesh hats...faux hawks are gracing the posters in the window at abercrombie...anything a little different or unique which starts out in a credible subculture gets exploited by the masses and played the FUCK out. so stop rocking mesh hats to the side, put away your aviators, take off at least one of those 3 sweatbands you have on, and quit listening to your little sister's Simple Plan cd's! no but seriously, 2 Live Crew will make a comeback.
I would just like everyone to take a second, and kiss my punk ass.
Is punk dead? Punk was dead before the Ramones, and at the same time, it's never been more alive. Did that make any sense whatsoever? NO!
OK, no but seriously now. As far as punk music goes, it's very much alive. There are just ridiculous amounts of punk bands out there. As far as ideas, punk wasn't really anything new in the 70's, so it can't really be dead these days. I am of course, talking about non-conformity and going against the grain. There have always been people like that, punk is just one more label. And to the dude talking about punk being the first with studded belts, I'm pretty sure that was the metalheads. No, that isn't important, I just felt like being condescending.
i beleive much of the initial reason for forming punk rock is dead. i mean, you get all these bnands whining about the governemnt nowadays, but so many of them don't even try to make a stand. don't get me wrong, there are still real punk bands. but a lot of that scene really has dissapeared and developed into almost a fashion statement- the studs and the patches. while they used to simply be a way of rebelling against the manistream fashion industry and corportae america, they have turned into icons of fashion--something i am sure the old punk bands would not have wanted.
