Wtf is up with no prizes for skiers these days?

im sick of this. Why can resorts and companies go so far to set up and organize rail jams, slopestyles, and big air comps and there is never any good prizes for skiers but always kick ass shit for snowboarders?

Our industry needs to step up to the plate and support us. If the sole reason snowboarders take home twice the cash as skiers at the SAME rail jam is the fact that snowboard companies step up to the plate then wtf ski industry, step up to the plate!

we are putting on our own rail jam this year, and our prizes will be equal for skiers and snowboarders as it should be.

All of us need to do something about this, write letters to shops resorts and companies. Buy from shops and ski companies that support their customers. Go to resorts that treat us as equals.

Until skiing has a "tony hawk momment" it wont change...

Generation X was the first to embrace boarding...it was our "alternative sport" to the stiff corporate world of skiing...now that we have all the jobs and control the money, it is understandable that snowboarding gets more attention and respect.

12-year old skier groms are not a big market share these days....while snowboarding crosses over into car ads and visa commercials, skiing, specifically "newschool" skiing fights this trend as "selling out"...

so Thatoneguy...which is it? Do you want us to "sellout" or stay "core"?

Cause your not gonna get more money into our sport without "selling out"....

and the image of NS skiing is laughable at best when viewed by people outside of our sport....

alot needs to change before the two sports are the same

im talking about paying the same 30 bucks boarders do to enter a rail jam, sitting around all day and watching them compete, then getting "allowed" to compete at the end and seeing a skier go home with 500, and a boarder go home with a grand or more.

it is bullshit, i agree. however, you have to understand that snowboarding events have a significantly larger sponsor budget than the very same ski event. in certain instances, sure, ski companies should step up. but most of the time, when cash prizes are involved anyways, the money is provided by a company outside the ski/snowboard industry such as ford or mountain dew, and they are much more willing to spend money on snowboarding which is higher profile than skiing.

...but anyways, you can bitch and complain all you want, but it just makes you look like a bigger idiot.

look around you kid, snowboarding has 10 times more money and popularity than skiing does. fuck, 11 years ago skiing was a dead sport full of gray hairs... be happy our sport has come so far so fast. we will grow with time... or my dad will be right and everything will crash and burn and "they" will call what we are doing a fad and we'll go the way of the yo-yo.

but you probably won't care 'cause you probably started skiing about 5 years ago because it was "cool".

it's coming. when snowboarding really began to grow in the late 80's some areas wouldn't even allow them to ride (Mad River still doesn't). it's called "new school" for a reason...and it's being recognized as a legitimate segment of the market more than you're realizing. was with the VP of K2 just yesterday and you better believe they're looking at every possible angle to grow this business. unfortunately, many retailers aren't understanding it yet so the money isn't being pumped into it the way board companies do. plus, the core companies like Line and Armada are doing their best to just break-even and push ahead so they can't throw down thousand$ for all the grass-root events.

i prized 6 pair of 1080's and 3 pair of 1080 boots last year courtesy of a co-op with Salomon. i'm throwing a rail jam on 10.22 just for fun. ski and board. totally my expense.

bitch to your local shop if they aren't supporting you!

The is the "thatoneguy" has never developed any perspective beyond what he condiders "gay" or "fucking stupid"...once he learns that pur industry is linked to bigger companies who control the purse strongs and that "sell out" and "core" mean ZERO to these companies he will start to understand....

Skiing is just not that cool - I like it, hell I love it, ive skied over a 100-days the past 13 - seasons and am going on my 28th year of skiing right now. Fuck I giave up a "real" job to move to Tahoe to ski for a "living". So I have a little perspective, just a little. But Skiing to non-skiers is a waste of money. Most of the Country views skiing as expensive snow-sledding.

You want more money in our sport?

Move to Europe or lower your expectations!

Unfortunately skiing still lives in the shadows of snowboarding and we SHARE events with those knuckle-draggers. They allowed us to use their parks!! It has come a long long way bro, were you skiing in terrain parks in the mid-90's??? I did!! And I would get yelled at or kicked out by boarders on a daily basis...and guess what, they were right on! Skiing looked gay back then...

What did I do?

I also snowboarded so I would go down to my ski-school locker room, strap on my 23-inch baseless 149 twin-tip and 540-indy over their punk asses...then I would come back with my skis and do a double daffy!!

We have come so far so quickly - give it some time

The thing is that we are a racer oriented industry while snowboard is a freestyle oriented industry.

Still some freestyle events have decent amount of cash money for the winners.

another problem in skiing is that sponsors never throw the money at the "good events" 6 k for winning icer air, hucking a switch 9 over a small ass jump??? I mean come on, it looked like shit and he got 6k$ for that.. what a joke when you think that winning the wssi comps aint giving you much more money...

Snowboarders are more plentiful, so there is a bigger transfer of money.

Ski companies have plenty of money for sponsoring comps.

I too, was in the same boat as you. Entering cool local comps and getting boned out of prizes yet paying the same fee. Some comps are skier/boarder same category, but you know they don't even pay attenion to the skiers. Or if they have a ski category, you win a gay x small snowboard shirt.

You know what I did. I said a big fuck you to them and started my own comp. Lord of the Park. For the first year, as a 18 year old kid, I got thousands of dollars worth of prizes. Every company I went to fully embraced the idea, my mountain even paid the insurance and took none of the money, they gave it all back for cash prizes. It was pretty damn well supported.

Last year the weather fucked it over, but I’m back this year. You know what, sponsors are putting even more money into it. It’s a ski only comp, I get to do whatever the fuck I want, and people support it. Sponsors put out, pros show up, and people have a damn good time.

I even got invited to do a comp at Sun Peaks, once again ski only, and its turing into an entire weekend festival.


So if you don’t think ski companies don’t support us, don’t bitch on here. Give them a nudge and they will help you dude. And if you show up to Lord of the Park at Hemlock, and the Sun Peaks event, companies will see that the public supports it too. Ask a local rep to hold a rail jam, or organize one yourself, they have lots of money, but don’t know what do with it. Thank you for the wicked opportunity to plug my comp as well. Seriously though, its up to us to get this shit going.

waynes world ive done the same stuff myself. Moved to summit county last season and did nothing but ski, im not talking pro level.....local. More than local, midwest....where some of the best park skiers come out of.

I never used the word core or sellout, I said indy companies should step of to the plate and stop having us look like fools at local comps. What does it say about the snowboard industry when they love their core consumers enough to throw a few boards here and there to some local level comps. A kid who wins a board at 13 in a little rail jam is likely to keep supporting that company for as long as he rides.....sponsored or not. All im saying is ski companies should do the same.

No perspective, I too am throwing a railjam out of my own pocket on dec 10 in the midwest. Im also providing the prize purse...line invaders for the skier winners and a yet to be bought snowboard for their winners.

You see my point, I am throwing an event and it is only fair and logical for me to provide equal prizes for the two sports respectively.

Any replies to what my post is actually about? Feel free, the rest of you can shut the fuck up.

bigger companies like salomon etc dish in to racing before freestyle. the prizes wont be any better before a freestyle ski only company becomes as big as the big companies. the reason burton became so big is that they were one of the first companies to make boards, even before rossi,salomon etc. and they were almost 100% a freestyle company right from the beggining. its as if saying that armada would have made twintips before salomon (if they would have been around),and that everyone would have bought from them, all the money would have gone into freestyle only.

Dude i donno if you have seen a snowboarding rail jam but there a fuck load more entertaining then a skiing one, boarders simply have more variety on rails, but yea as a whole the snow boarders get more shit in any comp usually. IF your pissed about this bitch at salomon, rossi, atomic, head, the companies that pay racers million dollar a year contracts. But realize even if you are good enough to go pro one day, you can live your whole life of a 2 to 10 year professional skier career

no prob boi, thats sweet your doing it out of your pocket, I did as well, but I ahd all the prizes and what not supplied by the sponsors. if you just ask a rep, unofficially, they will even just hand you shirts right there.

NS is sponsoring it so the press release will be on the front page...unless you wanted it to get ideas off. but i haven't written it yet. IM me if you need any ideas, help, outliens, whatev.

i dont have a problem with it. just like i dont have a problem with women skiers, and snowboarders getting paid less than male competitors. i think the payout to skiers, snowboarders, men and women, should be in somewhat equivelant ratios to what the crowd wants to see, and to the number of contestants in some cases.
does that make sense to anyone?

dylhole that makes sense. thats what it is all about. thats why sarah burke gets paid more then zach d and those sort of guys, even though they may kill her, shes the best of the ladies and hes the middle of the men.

I like how my comp pays out though, $1800 for skiers $0 for boarders

most core boarding companies are fuckin filthy ass rich, like burton. our core companies arent wealthy enough to throw down steeze for prizes yet, and if u think solomon and k2 give 2 shits about core comps and prizes, think again, those corporate assholes just want their $$, note how they dont just make skis and ski related gear, theyre into everything. we need to wait for companys like liberty, line, armada, 4frnt and the like to blow up like burton did, and then theyll throw down the gear you want.

the core events are what lack the support. As much as snowboarding has sold out, It still supports its core events. Whenver you go to rail jams at your local hill you see the local snowboard rep with his tent. He is raising the stoke at a local level. Ski companies are more willing to put their money into national events like the x games or the US open. Once they understand that the heart of skiing is at our local hills and not at the x games, we will make some progress

yes, they still hand out skis where i am, iv seen at atleast 3 events.

I just think, hey your there to ski and have fun, prizes are what people get greedy and "need to win" sort of things. And huck. And i mean come on if you love the sport that much, prizes shouldnt matter

Ok.... at some series here in the Midwest last year CAlled Midwest Xtreme Series (MWX www.midwestx.com) they promised huge prizes. IT was a 4 stop event, and some of the stops were over 12 hours away. It cost like 100 dollars to entire all 4 stops. Well, that, but like 40$ of lift tickets times 4 stops, plus food and loding... IT all comes out to be like 400$ just for this contest. And for winning it overall, i get a 55$ Fleece Vest, that is XL. And at just the last stop, the winner for boarders won a weeks session to Windells. FOR ONE CONTEST!! It was shitty.

But one thing that blew up snowmoarding was the olympics I think if in 2010 we are in the olympics w ewill see a huge explosion into the sport of skiing i just odnt know if i am ready for that.

I honestly dont mind what are sport is now of course i want it to grow and progess but not all at once!!

I got a pair of skis, bindings, poles, a bag, and some other stuff at our local comp.
It was awwweesome.
But the skis were 165cm, so I'll most likely never ride them, and noone will ever buy elans. soooo yeah.
