any one from the tahoe area i am thinking of starting a core ski/snowboard shop in either SLT or NLT i would start it with a good snowboarder friend, the original investment would be large but hopefully worth it. if you live in the area what woud you want carried, and what kind of set up would you like.
i'm not from there but i think the skis and stuff take care of themselves...but get good clothes for sure, orage, siver, oakley etc. is it going to have a full tuning service or is it just sales?
i know that this should be in ski gabber but yes hopefully we will be able to set up full tuning service it all depends on space and money. because this isnt going to be cheap to start up and i am going to start contacting co. reps next week to see about availabitlity of product manufacturs price etc. i am also flying out to tahoe in 2 weeks to check out a few locations. and if you come to my shop ill see what i can do about getting you some chronic.
^we are going to try and keep it very core, and the big names will be more expensive on the business end. also there are plenty of places in the area you can go to get your volkl and rossignol and such.
^well i would but its basically impossible to do that. so lets stick to ski and snowboard stuff. and we dont want to own jibij i respect what Mr. Bryant has done and look to head in somewhat the same direction as him. helping progress a sport that we all love by giving skiiers an outlet to get gear that represents the real side of their sport.
you might have better luck in Reno because there aren't any "core" shops that carry both skis and snowboards. Bobo's is the closest thing, but it wouldn't take much to get take all of their youth audience and freeriders. Reno needs a ski shop comparable to the snowboard shop here (out of bounds) that sponsors events and riders. I think if you played you cards right in Reno and did a good job of getting your name out you would find a nice market niche and probobally do very well after a few years.
thank you. someone i spoke to about faction was a little less than frienldy, but i later found out that they had nothing to do with the company.
and i think we figured out our store set up. half white (ski side) half red (snowboard) each side having a tv wall playing respective video. actually theres too much to explain so ill see if i can get the rendering up soon.
I understand its hard to get in. but on the snowboarding side my friend has his hand veryyy deep in the industry, he has good relationships with Kidsnow productions, M3, Ride, and Lib Tech. and I have been working very very very hard for a long time now to save the money to chase my dream. and i know truckee is impossible so i am going to focus more on SLT locations when i go outin two weeks.
actually, bringing in a lot of smaller companies is going to cost you a lot more than bringing in bigger ones like k2, salomon, etc because the smaller companies have much lower profit margins. i have been bugging my shop's owner for the past two years to bring in 4frnt, but the only reasoning they tell me as to why we arent carrying them is because there isnt enough of a profit margin. kinda sucks cause you wanna support the upstarts, but i guess its just not financially plausible sometimes. good luck though, if i get out to the slc area i'd be sure to stop in.
Agreed. The hardgood brands are obvious. Carry the best. Also have a website w/ with ability to sell both in North America and abroad to the folks who don't have access to brands like Armada. This will expand your customer base and you will reap the rewards.
Clothing is important and make sure you carry lifestyle brands to sell during the summer - skate, surf and hey, since Sublux is back you can support them, too.
Finally, the back shop. Customer service will define just how successful you are. The best gear in the world won't keep you afloat if your service and back shop are not up to par. Go all out with hiring the best, most motivated employees you can find. You are only as good as your team.
Other things to differentiate your shop: free internet access. Java (maybe have small espresso bar) and consider your summer business carefully: skateboards, mountainbikes, etc. Core shops can survive on winter business alone, but that's very difficult.
It will be the hardest thing you've ever done, but the most rewarding as well. Especially if you succeed.
we dont want to own jibij i respect what Mr. Bryant has done ;;;;;;;you have all ready lost the battle your shop will fail with weak ass thoughts like that
^trust me im dedicated to being the best but this shop wont be the same as jibij. its a different approach, and it will be the besr of its kind. and the lounge idea. i talked to my buddy and i will be hopefully donating my Playstation and him his xBox for people to lounge. but putting in a food service would be too much.
Be careful enetering the Tahoe market...it is a vacation town with not much year round support. The rent is pricey and you have several well established shops to compete with.
Someone suggested Reno...and that is a much larger year round oppurtunity not just for winter sales/rentals/tuning but also for summer items (which sell year round in reno)...
North Lake Tahoe is dominated by Daves/Porters and Granite Cheif - All own multiple stores and have big credit lines with their suppliers...real tough competition!
Good Luck - Tahoe has a few smaller "core shops" but there is no real scene to suppport em,
It's about making your shop "sticky" Phrosty. Give customers a reason to hang out, stick around and buy something. That's why you'd put in TV's with vids and have couches.
But of course, you're the expert! (at least that's what my friend whose name rhymes with Marvy told me. He also told me you were almost banned from the NS site a couple of years ago for being a dickhead, but that's another story. LOL!).
Hell, take Phrosty's advice: Fuck the shop, open a bar! Sell cigarettes, too and make money off of people's vices. Oh, wait, skiing is a vice,..
haha you rock dude.
there was a local coffee shop that opened up in my town and they had 4 xboxes and halo goin...that got them sooooo much business. just stupid entertainment like that...just have a ski movie goin and then on another tv just have 1 xbox. people will talk and like to hang there.
i like the lounge idea, and you should sell smith and oakley. scott poles. orage, oakley, and siver clothing. and sponsor local riders. also, you should have rail jams and stuff to promote your buisness
