Flashing the "Rasta" colors

I was flipping through the new Freeskier and saw a picture of the c-crew, who i dont really care about, but i saw some guy on the right holding a big flag with the "rasta" colors like it meant somethign to him. I frowned like i do whenever i see those colors in the ski community represented. people seem to think it relates to ganj or something. it doesnt represent ganj or rasta. represents afica. i think its kinda funny seeing so many ignorant people using the colors. just a thought. sorry for ranting. rip me to shreds.

all i know is that jah would be stoked to drop $70 to hang out on a ski hill all day with white folks and sip $5 cocoa in the lodge afterwords.
the rasta colors have kinda become kitch over the last 20 years anyways. actually the whole religion is pretty bunk. i wouldnt worry too much about what colors people are rockin. they're all going to die eventually.

I didnt have time to read the whole thread, but to whoever said something about just wearing colors becuz they are "cool", theres a lil more to it than that. You have to realize that the colors actually symbolize something, and thats the reason why people dont wear hats with swastikas on them becuz they think the symbol is "cool". Everyone at least has a general idea of what the swastika represents, unlike the rasta colors.
Hm that was a lil jumbled, but i think u get the point

I agree... only about 3 people in this thread have Rastafarianism, Babylon, Jah, and the colors accurately defined.
I have been to Nine Mile in St. Annes Jamaica, and i have met Richard Booker. Those of you who know the significance of that village, and that person, then you will know that i have a somewhat qualified opinion on this matter.
Rastas don't like seeing their colors disrespected by seeing people who are ignorant (13 year old park rats who come from rich families in PC) flash them about, meaninglessly. It would be like someone sporting a yamulche (not sure how you spell it, pardon me) just for fashion's sake.
It's like this new craze with people wearing Che Guevara t-shirts. Do they even know who he was, wear he came from, or what he did? "He was a Communist Cuban revolutionary" is what i hear from these ignorant jackasses. What they really mean is "i am wearing this shirt cause they sell them at Hot Topic, and the Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine painted his image on his speaker cabinet." If those d-bags wearing Che shirts actually knew what he did, they probably wouldn't wear them.
PLEASE BE EDUCATED IF YOU ARE GOING TO WEAR SOMETHING TO MAKE A STATEMENT.

yeah the che thing really bothers me. but thinking about it really can lead you to predict other comming trends. i think nelson mandela will catch on. i saw the shirts awhile ago and went and researched the man. hes not a hero in any aspect. he shouldnt be idolized. people also really dont have any connection to what he did or didnt do. they just think "oh revolution...yeah i agree! we should all like overthrow shit. i mean when my best friends get killed and bleed all over this shirt in our massive upheavel, it will all be for my man che. communism works man! its like having no goverment! whoo hoo! anarchy too! fuck bush! wheres my green day cd?"

uh, i sport Che stuff because i know the sacrifice he made for people in 3rd world countries. yeah, he didn't go out on top, so to speak, but i'm impressed and appreciate all he gave up so he could do his best to help other people. i'm not screaming "viva le revolution!" in the streets or anything while waving a Che flag around, i've taken the time to learn what he stood for. i don't agree with everything he said or thought 100%, but i think it's honorable that he put his money where his mouth was and stood up for what he believed in. so many people talk about their beliefs, but he did something about them. the same could be said about Mandela. you might not agree with every single choice he made, but you have to appreciate the sacrifice he made to accomplish the change that was made in South Africa.

mandela was a hero by the way.

Another important Afrocentric identification is with the colors red, gold, and green, from the Ethiopian flag. They are a symbol of the Rastafari movement, and of the loyalty Rastas feel towards Haile Selassie, Ethiopia, and Africa rather than for any other modern state where they happen to live. These colors are frequently seen on clothing and other decorations. Red stands for the blood of martyrs, green stands for the vegetation of Africa, while gold stands for the wealth and prosperity Africa has to offer. (On the other hand, many actual Ethiopian scholars state that the colours originate from an old saying that the Virgin Mary's belt is the rainbow, and that the Red, Gold, and Green are a symbol of this.)
"dressed in rediculous red and blue like I don't see what the big deal is."

the rasta thing is gay as hell, so you smoke weed, well so do I, I don't need a banner or goggles letting everyone know I do, plus if you wore that and some rasta guys saw that shit they would be pissed and would have to fuck your day up real good

I doubt the Rastas would beat you down... but i GUARANTEE if some Jamaican pseudo-Rastas saw some goofy little white kid wearing those colors, they are likely to stab you in in the throat with an ice pick. They are ghetto like that... seriously.

They did see that, they HAVE seen that.
Tourism has flooded Jamaica obviously, and real rastas had to deal with rebelous well-to-do kids living side by side with them, smoking they weed, wearning the colors, but they were saying the same message as the true rastas. Which they didn't believe they ment anyways.
Then those rich kids got into heroine and coke and changed the ways, again.

Half the people wearing rasta colors dont even know who Jah is. It is now cool to wear the colors, even if you have no idea of rastafarianism beyond that they smoke weed.

Actually, ashley is part aztec, and the colors of the people she came from were in fact the rasta colors. So she has a real reason to wear them. don't hate until you know the whole thing.

actually, weed was smoked as a rite to becoming a man in rastafarianism.

i don't believe that, the Bible says it. don't get the two things mixed up. if Rastas can change the meaning of babylon (a term they stole from christians), then we can wear their colors however we want. fair trade, if you ask me.

i think that if you listen to regga music and share some views and beliefs of what rasta is all about then you have enough justification to wear rasta colours, what bothers me is kids that work at american eagle and have not a fucking clue about who people like bob marly or peter tosh are or what they stand for, but think that a rasta polo or belt or whatever suites them

Its a representation. The "Rasta Colors" represent somthing. Whether it be the blood spilt by the Ethiopians, or somthing found in nature. It represents African roots, Reggae music, and for alot of ignorant youths, "smokin reefer myaaan". there is alot of misrepresentation among kids. For me, its all about the roots and culture, your lifestyle, and the appreciation for jah works. "you don't haffi dread to be rasta" morgan heritage
oh yah, i was holding the flag in the photo in freeskier, it represents me, and the C-CREW. so to all the haters I and I say FIYAH BUN DEM!
