I was flipping through the new Freeskier and saw a picture of the c-crew, who i dont really care about, but i saw some guy on the right holding a big flag with the "rasta" colors like it meant somethign to him. I frowned like i do whenever i see those colors in the ski community represented. people seem to think it relates to ganj or something. it doesnt represent ganj or rasta. represents afica. i think its kinda funny seeing so many ignorant people using the colors. just a thought. sorry for ranting. rip me to shreds.

our culture has adopted so much from the Rastafarian culture and now uses much of the symbols that hold a completely different meaning to Rastafaris to represent something else, be it peace, individuality, community, ganj, or whatever. yeah, most of the people reppin the colors are ignorant of what they originally meant, but that doesn't mean that they can't identify with them in some way. it's a combination of ignorance and the blending of cultures. think about it- people celebrate Octoberfest and St. Patrick's Day who aren't even German or Irish, but that doesn't mean that they're totally ignorant of where the celebrations came from. if he's doing it because it's trendy, he's a typical C-Crew member, but he might think the symobolism that our culture puts behind those colors is rad and he just wants to represent those ideals. who really knows, though...

how can they hate Jamaica if Rastafari was started there? quote from the link posted- "The movement emerged in Jamaica among working-class and peasant black people in the early 1930s."

How true is that statement. Rastafarianism started in Africa.

Im proud to say that i too wear "rasta" colors. Why? Because i partially believe in the Rastafarian ways of life. Yes. many people wave these colors, but so what? Many are not as ignorant as you think. Yes, many do it to be "cool" or "hip" but others dont. Stop stereotyping man....PEace and Love

when i see those colors, i know i'm dealing with a stoner and i'm safe. stoners don't fight, they offer to help you do yard work and then steal all your pizza.
not raggin on anyone here- i love the pipe, too.

the reason it was started was because some hope could be given to those living in Jamaica of a better place in Ethiopia with Emperor Haile Selassie I as their ruler and Africa as their land. So yea basically it was started by poor blacks in Jamaica but also followed Marcus Garvey and some his principles. They nah like Jamaica. All of you who have heard Welcome to Jamrock (most of you?), the song is about how shitty Jamaica is

Cosco is right man. Colors are cool. Everyone likes colors. So why are we looked down on for wearing certain colors? no one makes fun of you for your blues, reds and blacks. So why reds greens and yellows?

forfun, care to explain to me why Bob Marley, probably the most famous Rastafarian, loved Jamaica so much? most Rastafarians don't hate Jamaica. that's like saying that most Christians hate homosexuals because the Vatican feels that homosexuality is a sin. just because one spokesperson for something says they feel a certain way, doesn't mean that everyone feels the exact same way.

rastafarianism developed out of the poorer communities of jamaica. babylon means the western world. oppression. i think marley prob liked jamaica for different reasons than actually liking being there. oh and for people up above. the colors mean something. for instance red stands for the blood spilled by white people. i think it should be taken a little more seriously. yea it evolves, but i think it should be out of acceptance not ignorance. im not saying people shouldnt sport them. i think people should just understand it better. i rep them out of true meaning.

babylon DOES NOT mean "oppression". "babylon" was the land promised to God's people in the Bible. good job.

prooves my point man. colors arent very peaceful. red for blood, green for africa, yellow for gold stolen. rastas arent peaceful and funlovin. lots and lots of violence in history. i think sterotypes is what people are rolling off of.

Are you "true meanings" Being held down and killed by whities? Smoking a lot of ganj?
I don't think.
It's about being a higher, lifted person. It gets you closer with HIM. Maybe it's your thing, but I think a lot of suburban american white kids want to believe in it, but dont really, really understand.
Not saying I myself understands it fully either. It's a really interesting belief and ideal system, but I don't sport it. I don't know enough about it. And from my outsider prospective it seems like a lot of white kids want to just take up the system because its hip.

here we go...
Babylonia was the capital city of Mesopotamia and was located on the Euphrates river. it was destroyed during the collapse of Mesopotamia and the area was later known as "Babylon". the Jews considered this land to be part of their homeland and felt that the land had been promised to them by God. the word "babylon" has since taken on the meaning of any type of utopia that a group of people feel is where they are supposed to eventually wind up. that is a paraphrased definition from dictionary.com. with that definition in mind, "babylon" is the complete opposite of "oppression".

are you out of your mind? part of the goal of Rastafarianism is world peace and to end the oppression of poor people. you really need to do some research.

its just different terminology i think for Rastafari. Babylon is the Western World, The Vatican, Western politicians. But one thing is for sure, Rasta's do not like Jamaica. Most of the country lives in poverty and the place is a poop hole. Many songs show Rasta's dislike of Jamaica:
Tour by Capleton
Welcome to Jamrock
Babylon Homework by Sizzla
just a few though

hmm interesting why a lot of rastafarians speak of leaving babylon. oh and i didn't mean to have oppression in the same thought sorry bout that. and about true meaning i mean that i think its important to recognize things those colors stand for. its just too bad the colors are played out.

I listen to all of those. I'm listing to Jamrock right now.
I guess I misunderstood what you all ment by dislike Jamaica. They do not like the life style of Jamaica, the corruption, poorness, not disliking Jamaica and talking shit on it and its people.

WAIT here is evidence that rastas dont like Jamaica STRAIGHT OFFA BOB MARLEY WEBSITE
Babylon Will Fall
The Rastas deny allegations by other relgious groups that they were antiwhite or antibrown (mulatto) and invited all to accept Jah . They vowed that at a secret hour known only to a devout few, converts would return to Ethiopia by an undisclosed means, leaving behind the tropical steambath of Jamaica, which they considered to be literally Hell on Earth. Until that time, Rastas would refuse to take part in the machinations of daily life and commerce in "Babylon," the sphere of temporal captivity of the spirit.

I agree they are played out. Reason being, I am sick of seeing them everywhere with kids who have zero knowledge of anything. Just like marley shirts, I see them and see kids who have no idea of what he symbolized or stood for. I just think they are damn trendy and need to slow down and people need to be more educated with it, before following some more trends.

if you think your so up to date on everything bob stood for and what those colors mean then say something to them when you see them. if your really that educated then educate and ingorant kid about it. I do think it is over rated, but i would really like to know more about rasta and bob marley, not just because i smoke pot, i just find it very intersting and maybe would put a whole new perspective on life, so if someone wants to educate me then just PM me
