Is advertising your film in mags. worth it.

what do you think?
most mags will sell me a 3inch sq. for about 800 bucks a month.
with a possiable profit of ten dollars a movie. it seems like a gamble. 80 copies doesnt sound like much. but if you factor in potential revenue. it really costs me 1600 dollars. not that i expect to sell every copy i had made.

have any of you made profit off a movie?

You can put that 800 into something else, or advertise another way.

i cant take him[liam downey] seriously cuz his name reminds me of that downy bear from back when i was a kid -d loc

I don't deny there are bad things in the US right now, hell, 51% of the country to be exact. But god damnit, our country being fat is NOT a problem. I do't give a shit how fat people are. hell, fat kids are harder to kidnap, that means our country is safer.

This is such a limited bussiness to get into. At least it's fun and you get to work in a good atmosphere. I would like to think i'll make a profit. w/o including the countless hours spent. at least i can fall back on patrolling.

3 square inches is basically nothing too, thats like 1.5" by 2", I don't think that it is worth it for that amount of money.

I personally think that magzine advertising is stale and overpriced. Web is the way to go! For 800 bucks a month you can get crazy web advertising!

You'd be best to get some less expensive web advertising that targets your market.

'cause really, who's going to notice a 3x3 spot in a mag that's rammed in with a bunch of others? They're just gouging you because the print costs are so high. :)

Fuck magazine ads. Internet and street teams is the way of the future.

my target market is the 7000 registered ski patrolllers in the states and canada. So far all the patrol web masters have been very kind with links.

also this forum is very helpful w/ my questions and as soon as i get paid i'll donate.

You have to go a little further than links... banners in high traffic areas, or more targeted links.

Browsing through your site quickly it looks like the focus of your movie is more powder and line oriented.

You should check out http://www.biglines.com - those ads at the left and right are fairly reasonably priced I think...

i think for like 70 bucks you can get a Front Page bulletin thing. Like a new little article. i dont' know the exact price, but some of my friends did it last year and it wasn't bad for how many people see it.

Very true... that is our cheapest option, and it gets the word out there.

However, I really think that this guy would do better with something like that on biglines.com. Let's face it, this is a much more park-oriented youth site.

His market just fits them way better.

biglines would be the way to go, you could also possibly ask the people at tgr if you could promote your film on there forum. It's a pretty active big mountain/powder enthuiast filled forum.

TGR as a movie company themselves might be a little averse to advertising other peoples' movies on their site. Partly because they wouldn't want to give people the impression that the ad film is actually a TGR production, and partly just for competition reasons. Biglines seems like a plan.

i didn't really consider TGR getting threatened by a tiny ski patrollers film. I would consider MSP, PBP etc. but not these dudes.

I just figured there would be some ski patrollers, that use that forum that would dig that movie.

Don't advertise in magazines. You have no assurances that they aren't fudging their circulation figures like Transworld does.

I think that's very true, as a consumer i find it reassuring to see that a start up ski movie business has the funding to advertise in a magazine. But then again, with that small of a spot and that high of a price it might not be worth it.

I doubt you'll make money. Especially on your first or second film.

There's a better way to advertise and make money.

Team up with local non-profits in your area, like an avalanche hotline or search and rescue. Show the film and give a percentage of the door to the non-profit. Local media (newspapers and radio) will usually support worthy causes so you get free advertising from the showing. You can also round up ski gear, etc and do a give-a-way for a $1 a ticket and give those proceeds to the non-profit.

Magazines? I'd look at more creative solutions and save your cash.

I think that unless you really, really tink your stuff is prifessional quality, then i wouldnt do it. I know the situation your in. I am a photographer and its a very similar business. Its hard to get started and sell your stuff. Its a very select business...

yup mostly deep pow and nice lines. we have a fetish about huge bc. hips. and sketchy ski cuts. also there is a lot of bombing for avalanches. the crew is all young kids in their twentys who all ride switch. were the newschoolers of patrol

yea, i cannot imagine advertising for a film in a newspaper to be even close to as efective as advertising other things in magazines such as clothing, skis ect. with goods such as these pictures are very effective way to show off and advertise their goods. With a video on the other hand, a picture is ont nearly effective, especially when you can show a trailer on line, and even uninterested consumers will watch it just for the simple fact that it can be entertainment. Im not trying to discredit magazine advertising completely, ads anywhere familiarize the consumer with the product, which inherently makes them moreconfident about their purchase, but with items such as movies allowing them an actual glimpse of what they are purchasing is much better.

that shit does happen though. i almost got thrown off the mountain beggining of last year because of vanvalin and some other fools talking shit at mid station then smokin on the way to the top in our car. only reason we got off becuase they knew who i was...my last name can pull some wieght seeing as its on every mammoth paycheck

Yea idk if n e one gets what they are expecting out of mags but its all about gettin the name of the film out and keeping it in yout head!!!!

i.e. You obvioulsy see war advertized on their site, you see it on NS, FS and other websites, you see posters, and trailers, then u flip through freeskier and see war again!! At some point they are just hoping u give in and buy the movie to see what the deal is!!
