Need ALL Your Help With Size

Looking for your suggestions in choosing the length for my new Salomon 1080 Foil, since I won't get a chance to demo different lenghts here in Europe.
I am 5'10", 175 lbs, 28 yo and have been on skis since I started walking.

Currently I ski on 160cm K2 Mach S Comp and 160 K2 Axis X due to mostly skiing short quick turns and I find them both stable enough in higher speeds probably due to my weight. I will be keeping the S Comps for my on-piste skiing and will sell the Axis X's.

Therefore I am choosing between these 2 lengths for the 1080 Foils casue I'm not looking for a bigger radius ski:

a. 166cm, sidecut 124-83-113, radius 15.2m
b. 174cm, sidecut 124-85-114, radius 17.6m

I will be jibbing mostly on-piste doing jumps and some off-piste exploring.
I don't know how twin-tips are compared to normal skis in length due to the tail and (probably) shorter running edge length.

One more thing: how well will the ski perform on-piste comparing the two lengths 166 (15.2m radius) and 174 (17.6m radius) in carved turns due to that it's a twin-tip with quite a short radius for a twin-tip and how the flex pattern differs.

I am 90% in getting the longer lenght, but am just curious.

Dude im your size exactly and I ski on 185 or bigger always. Alot comes down to your riding style but man how the hell are you skiing 160's if you have been skiing your whole life...those are soooo small. Get the 174 at least, but even that would feel way small to me.

Cool! I'm Sold! Am gettin' the 174's for sure! And the longest Foil is 182, which I don't think is as agile.

Oh and yeah, 10 years ago I was skiing on 200cm trees like the rest of us!

How about mounting the bindings for the type of skiing I will be doing as described in my thread?

Do I mount them at the marked point of the manufacturer or slighty backwards?

ya 174 should really be the shortest someone your size rides, you say you have been skiing your whole life and are a good skier and a pretty big guy something in the 180 range would ski alot better. They might not be as "agile" as you claim but if youre a good skier you can still ski them fine, besides are these foils we are talking about? Those skis are super light and easy to turn no matter what length. Stop being a pussy and step up to the plate with a real ski.

Dude go withn the 182's the extra size will plow through the snow more, go faster and youll have more tail when landing...

With your weight 182s would be perfect for when you progress with them, 174s will be a little too short, and your 175 lbs? You are DEFINITLEY heavy enough for the 182s

I know how you feel though your a little older and want a ski that you can throw around a little bit more, and your thinking the smaller ski the easier it will be for you to manuver. But, when you want speed the 74s wont cut it.

182s man for sure

Yeah, you're ALL right about the size!
That's why I wanted YOUR opinion since you're all in the game.

We got the size covered, now all I need is suggestions about the binding position since I won't do much park cause there are very few at the places where I ski in Europe. Plus I always have to drag my girfriend along (who is an aggressive skier and likes skiing fast, thank god).

Oh yeah, and don't worry about my age (28), I feel like I'm 20 :-)

if you aren't going to be doing much park you definitely need alonger ski than a 174.

OK, the right size for me is 182.

I will be mostly ridin' some on-piste, jibbing, doin' quickies on the rough sides of the pistes, jumping, trickin', and when freshies are in the store, exploring where the snow cats don't.

I've been doing all of this I must say quite well on my everyday K2 Axis X (107-70-97) in 160 length on regular basis.

Since I've always had interest into freestyle and freeriding I've decided it's finally time to chip in the greens for the ski that's made for this and has my type of skiing written all over it's core.

So for this type of my everyday skiing on the foils: what are your suggestions on the binding mounting position? I'm not sure of the exact factory binding marking position, but what I've heard it's best to mount them 2-3cm to the back for all-mountain skiing???

def get the 182, and i would mount them at the recommended spot. salomons arent put too far up to begin w/ so mounting them back will be a little over-kill.

Are you buying an all east college pass? It'd help me out if you bought it at attitash.com/parker. It's the same price as the normal site and will accomplish the exact same thing, but you'd be helping out a fellow newschooler. thanks

Since I've never been on twin-tips and have never ridden a ski with a waist above 70mm, how different will the ski feel on-piste.

I know the Foil isn't a slalom ski and it's like comparing a dog to women's lingerine, but I would appreciate your thoughts on the different feeling of such babies and how they turn due to their girth and at the same time being very light.
I would also like to know if I chose the correct ski for my type of skiing, since I won't be doing much park and therefore don't need a park dedicated ski and I think the Foil is rather special considering it's sidecut, which is more aggressive than most freestyle skis.

I've always liked light skis (not in hand, but on feet) cause they made me wanna jump all the time and have fun all over the slopes. Also the reason why I will put Salomon S912Ti bindings, which I hear are pretty lightweight.

foils are perfect for u, they dont feel like a twin tip, they feel like a racing ski. It shouldnt take u that long to get used to the added size or width

As you've noticed, the sidecut is much more agressive, so the turn radius will be more sharper. I think you should be fine, it may take a few days to get used to, but seeing as you've been skiing for 20 years, im sure its something you can handle. The foil is incredibly light, so its not gonna be bulky and heavy on your feet, which sounds like something you'd like. You should be able to ski amazingly well in this ski, and not be limited to only one area.

ok so you've got foils and 912ti's. that's basically the lightest setup imaginable.

DEFINITELY DO NOT mount the skis further back than the recommended mounting line. either go directly on the recommended line or a cm or two in front of it, depending on how much park you plan on riding.

182 without a doubt as well.

and the difference between these and your current skis will be noticeable, but you'll get used to it in a day tops. maybe it'll be slightly more difficult to make super tiny slalom turns, but why would you want to do that anyway? fatter skis with bigger sidecuts rip large radius turns very well.

for the skiing you do i would get them mounted around 4-5cm back from center because that way they will carve and perform better

Anyway, i think your going to find that you would have liked the longer skis. Your used to stiff shorts skis. Now your getting longer soft skis, with a turned up tail(skis shorter). You sound like a good skier, I think you'd be able to handle the next size up, unless of course you like shorter skis.

if he was on 160s before, too big a jump will make that shit weird, although yes..... he would for sure. you're a heavy guy too (we'll compared to most of us who are your height and like 140 lbs) so a longer ski is def the best choise for you. anything in the 180 zone i'd recommend.

Hey Gang!

I just had a memory buzz run through my head. I remember back when my Old Man used to be the Head Ski Jumping Coach of the National Canadian Team. Back when he was like in his twenies or so, he also was in the national team and his greatest achievement was 8th place in the Olympics in Sapporro, JPN back in 1972.

Hence probably where I got my love for skiing and the interest for jumping and stuff from (not that I wanted to join a Ski Jumping Team though).

I used to watch them train and those guys had and have pretty wide and very long sticks that are almost as long as a mini town car. (sure they make huge and long jumps)

Anyways, just wanted to spill a little of my background wit'cha!

def the 182s with some look bindings man, dont 4 get that becasue theyr twins they ride shorter than they really are...noticed this when i jumped from a 160 to a 176 and hardly felt the difference
