first off, i'm not saying that socialism is the answer - but mass consumerism is also NOT the answer. and yes, there is a difference between consumerism and capitalism.

we can go back 50 years and live in a capitalistic society, and to tell you the truth, i think i would be happier. why? because i wouldn't know about all the exploitation that happens across the world. through our new inventions, specifically the internet and wireless communication it is possible to know right now what is happening in indonesia, right now! and through this comes the constant feeling of inequality. everything i do to further my being stops any number of people in other 'worlds' from furthering theirs.

to whoever was saying that no socialist state has lasted, i pose this question - what capitalist society has lasted? we're in the present, and it's quite apparent that sooner or later our capitalistic hierarchy will be overthrown.. by what, i don't know, but the model is there for our eventual decline. the roman empire collapsed on itself, the british empire experienced decline, there is no system of government that has lasted a significant period in human existence.

why is this?

what makes u think that america will be overthrown, the american government does not allow itself to be overthrown because of the way our government was created. It is a an evolving government that adapts to the times and changes with the people. Americanism is also a major factor, our way of life will work as long as we want it too, america is way to proud of itself to every be thrown over, the government is elected by the people so if they feel that something is going the way they dont want it to there is always the oppurtunity to have their view heard, that is exactly what is going on here in this post, so saying that america will be over thrown is rediculous, i dont care what happened to the roman empire or any other place in history, that is because they were either conquered by someone else or a dictator took over, that cannot happen here... Americans wouldnt allow it, there would be no way to do that and actually keep control of the states before that person was ousted...

sure ive heard of maslow... amyone whos taken first year psych has heard of maslow. and perhaps youve got a point in the fact that residents of africa and such places have a hard time implementing a stable economic system when the first thing on their minds is where the next meal will come from etc... fact is, sonny jim, that i have seen and lived in countries with both types of economic systems, i.e. u.s., canada, and china, and i can say from first hand experience that it has been a lot easier to find employment and a decent wage in california than in the case of the strugling b.c. economy a year and a half ago, or in china. i dont think that this is disputeable. as for a social democracy.. ive heard of one, and its called america. this too, is indisputable. fact is that youre confusing the argument. are you trying to say that a more socilist democracy is a good way to o, or are you preahing pure socialism? pleas, for the love of all thats holy, know what youre talking about before you speak, and please, again, dont make assumptions that everyone besides yourself is uncultured or unintelligent, because youre wrong. like i have said before, you get to have your opinion, but that doesnt make it right, and it surely doesnt make me wrong. and i do think it is hard to accept anything you say as legitimate when you are incapable of typing a response without using multiple swear words, due to the fact that you have a seven word vocabulary... whos unintelligent?

yeah not only that, i never said anything about us being invaded, that is quite possibly, its just that american pride would flair up and make it very difficult to rule us because we are fiercly independent. ok, i don't know if this has been brought up, but i think the whole point of buy nothing day is being overlooked. obviously, if you are without necessities to live, you should buy it. buy nothing day is just supposed to raise awareness of how excessive our society is. and it's one day because you can't have buy-nothing-forever. you should really practice buy nothing day everyday. ask yourself whether or not you NEED five pairs of skis or whatever. but i also agree that we wouldn't have this 'quality of life' we all enjoy if people didn't spend and throw money into the economy. all that i, and everyone else that TRULY participated in buy nothing day, want to do is to regulate the imbalance in overspending and exploitation. because, afterall, it's about the yin and the yang living in harmony. haha. i thought this was an interesting point of view risen by David Suzuki... it goes something like, we know that the world and our resources are finite, but we produce and expect our economy to grow infinitely... makes you think, don't it?

Yeah thats exactly the kind of arrogance that is going to lead to your countries decline. America is not a social democracy, when you have 51% of a race living in the 'inner city' it is obvious that there is no socialism aspect. Your healthcare is privitized and your education system is coming closer. Your utilities are also being sold off. I'm saying that socialism can work but in a modified context, hence social democracies or controlled capitalism. The united states has absoulutly no control over capitalism thanks mostly to reagan. Pharamcutical companies are begining to own the rights to the research done on their products. Large exploitive corperations like Nike are beginning to control our educational systems. I really don't think you can say that the United States is a social democracy. It will only be a matter of time until Americas weak antitrust laws can no longer control Barnes and Noble from contolling distribution and corperations will have complete control over our doctronal system. Your government will be overthrown eventually. Perhaps by the people it fucks over internally or externally the fact is it will happen. The united states and its economic system fucks over all minorities, blacks, latinos natives, homos, women etc. together these groups make up the majority and to quote Bob Marley 'you can't fool all the people all the time'. The truth may get by the majority for another year, another ten years another century but eventually the majority will rise. Geurilla tactics are changing and the Americans are useless in Geurilla warfare, you got spanked by the Cubans, i'm talking about your ground invasion after Castro took power that isn't published too widely. Face it Castro made you look stupid and thats why you don't own Cuba and that why theres an embargo. ummm the invansion of cuba is widely published so ur wrong on that point, and as far as the united states not being a social democracy, nobody said it was. i said it was going in the direction of a social democracy, it is not even close to being there yet. it is not becoming more capitalist either though. If you knew anything about American politics u would know this. And for saying that the majority of people are being oppressed that would mean that they side with the liberals. this is not the case. a majority of americans describe themselves as being conservative. c_lo, you're making these countries sound retarded and it's capitalisms fault. This isn't entirely true. Take a country like India for example. They have a ridiculous amount of AIDS in their population (25 million), but there are smart people coming out of this country. India produces the most mathematics and computer science phd's of any nation per capita (I'm not saying the problem can be fixed by mathematicians and programmers, I'm saying their are intelligent people over there not subjected to the whim of mighty America). The problem is these smart people aren't helping out the problem in their own area, they get away from the problem, I don't really blame them. Look at the AIDS problem. Those countries, instead of employing sexual education, they have just increased production on generic pharmaceuticals that combat the AIDS symptoms, they simply mass produce them. A wide range of the AIDS epidemic spreads because people in countries over there believe that having sex with a virgin cures AIDS... yea that's reeeeeealy going to help. Capitalism hurts this huh? I'm sure Bill Gates pledging 100 million dollars to fight AIDS over there is really making their AIDS problem worse?

And what is this crap, the capitalist system screws over ALL minorities. You explain to me how prestigious universities such as MIT, Caltech, and UC Berkeley are over 50% asian? And that financial aid is even higher for minorities? Ohhh and where does that come from, government subsidies... yes that totally wicked and infamous government Just try your odds versus a minority if your white and trying to get into Duke. How do you explain some minorities making it out of the ghetto? They obviously found a way to not be screwed. One of the problems w/ the ghetto isn't capitalism, it is a socialist element, welfare! Look at the animal kingdom. Animals are out there to sustain themselves, they do this by maximizing their intake of needs and minimizing their output, the work they need to do to achieve this. Welfare is the same damn thing, people get their welfare checks and don't work jobs and blame the system, when in fact they are taking advantage of this socialist aspect and actually maximizing their intake w/ minimal output. And don't think I'm calling minorities animals, and that makes me a cracka ass racist... fuck that, plenty of white people are doing the same thing on welfare. The problem w/ a substantial amount of people on welfare is that they are doing this minimization of output, can you explained to me how more socialist elements would help, when we have the current ones employed, and we we have unemployed and impoverished OVERWEIGHT people... that's never happened in the history of the world. haha... bibskis and SUpilot. are you guys serious? 'the united states will never fall' that is the most egotistical comment ever. 'we're more powerful today than back then' - you know what so is everyone. Any country in the world can buy atomic technology and bomb any other country. the relaity is that US was more powerful back then because they had technology that others didn't.

Capitalism can do good things for other places but why would the US as a whole (the most powerful, everlasting country that it is) choose to pay the people that are working in sweat shops enough to at least help their situation when they could have the money?

Do you think everyone can be rich? Money has to be made off of others.

Being Irish, I guess I should resent the Notre Dame nickname 'The Fighting Irish.' After all, how long do you think nicknames like 'The Bargaining Jews' or 'The Murdering Italians' would last? Only the Ironic Irish could be so naively honset. I get the feeling that Notre Dame came real close to naming itself 'The Fuckin Drunken, Thick-Skulled, Brawling, Short-Dicked Irish'

i do have to give ol c lo a bit of credit on his last post.. not a lot, but some. im suprised you know what the three gorges dam is son, but good work. and as far as the US being a social democracy, sorry kid, but thats what it is.. i said it before and i stick by my story. a pure democracy, as any high schooler knows existed primarily in the helenist world.. the states were designed as a social democracy in the way that the people do have a say in policy makeing, but the state has the power once theyre elected. theres increadible government subsidization for everything from health care to the greatest recipiant of govnt aid, the agrarian aspect of the economy. so to say we are not a social democracy is foolish... just so you know, heres a lttle backgound on my family... since my grandparents on either side, both of my parents and all their siblings save one have masters degrees, my dads parents spent seven years living in mali, and two in somolia durring the 1970's working for the BLM (buereau of land managment) my other grandfather recently retired form a career working for the education system in the department of defence. he was involved with all overseas schooling on military bases. i already listed some places ive lived. i think i have a better idea about whats going on in the world than the majority of people, and i would assume a better understanding of it than you, c lo. to qutoe charles barkley, 'i might be wrong, but i doubt it.'

I'm happy to say that I bought nothing last friday, and I actually do have some money to spend. I'm not just getting lucky because I didn't have money to spend anyways. I feel that we don't need to buy something just because it is there (look at infomercials, how much of that stuff is pure crap?) I'm responding to some previous things said that I think are completely ignorant, such as 'only poor people don't like capitalism' no shit!!! most of the world is poor. They will always be poor as long as we(rich countries) continue to step all over them. only a few countries can be considered rich, and only a small percentage of the people in these countries are rich. most, if not all of us live in one of those countries, considering where this discusion is taking place. If we continue to consume the amount of resources that we currently are. we will burn the earth out. what then?
and about not being able to help africa because of dictators taking all the money. why is 'the most powerful country in the world' allowing dictators to do this. you are ok with this? the money needs to be given to the right people. and get those dictators out of power. The USA does give some money to the underdeveloped countries, but how much more does it spend on its armies, and so on. and what about the poor people living within the states? who is helping them? oh wait they are not important enough. we need to spend that money on million dollar bombs, so we can continue to bomb iraq.
and about it being imposible to take over the US. get over yourself, and your country. nobody is invinsible. The US may be strong now, but things change.the only way that the us won't be overthrown someday is if they become a happy, self-contained bubble. I think that the gov't has already bee partially taken over already. take a look at the power a drug cartel has in the states, or even walmart . this is only one company. here in canada it controls the market of many small towns. nobody can compete with them, so they go out of business. once they have their virtual monopoly, they can decide what will be brought in, how many, the price, everything. walmart has more control over the government than most people think. they have, and spend more money, than some small governments do.
open your eyes people. we do not live in that perfect bubble.

there is a major misunderstanding going on, i did not say that america cannot be taken over because i think we are invincible or something, there is a real reason why it cannot be taken over.

when it comes down to it, to take over america, u would have to kill damn near every person here, house by house, town by town, city by city, state by state. It would never happen any other way. americans are fiercly independent. time and time again, whenever our way of life has been threatened, americans band together to fight a common enemy. no one is trying to say that america is a perfect place, cause this is not the case, no where on earth could ever be perfect so u all are just asking the impossible if u think so. improvements are being made in the quality of life here everyday. americans do not believe necessarily in everything being equal in the end, but what does matter is that everyone has equal OPPURTUNITY, this is what we are working towards, not guarenteeing everyone a perfect way of life, although it is our constititutional right to pursue happiness, equal oppurtunity is the basis of our way of capitalism. its sink or swim once this oppurtunity has been given to u, for it can only be what u make of it. this is what we are working for, this is what the government is trying to do, contrary to what many of u may believe, and if u dont believe it, then go to polls and vote against it, or write ur congressman or start a petition. there are many ways in which to influence our political culture, anyone who is not doing so has no right to complain at all because by not doing anything, u are only saying that u approve of what is going on.

bibskis, i think it was you that was telling me to not use my textbooks to talk about things (it may be in another thread, but it's still relevant) - just think for one second about the world. what has your political system been made out of? jefferson saw the way that natives lived, so he adopted some aspects of their system of government. every day that passes, history is made... so why the fuck can't i use it to argue a point??

you say that every day there are improvements being made to the american way of life -> but what are these improvements? increased GDP? wow, so more is bought, more is sold, more is burned, more is eventually left for later generations to deal with - ie - LANDFILLS. what other improvements? congress passing bills increasing military spending by billions of dollars? how does that help anybody in the world? from every side of the coin, people will die because of it.

ok, so equal opportunities are given to your citizens? in the states, i'll accept that as a somewhat valid argument, but what about foreign workers that are exploited to the extreme every single day at the hands of american multinationals? not very equal once it's outta the scope of your neighbourhood, is it?

and the last, most ridiculous point i would like to bring up is your notion of not voting, and how this portrays an accepting attitude. it couldn't be further from the truth. millions of people realize that their vote does absolutely nothing. the people that don't vote, are excercising their right to show some civil disobedience; it's just really a shame that american democracy has come to this point.

I think some peopel on this site need a bit of education. A lot of ideas are being thrown around and it doesn't sound like anyone understands what they're talking about. Yes inequality exists in the world - why don't you find out WHY it exists. What is capitalism anyway? And what's wrong with poor people not liking it? Maybe doing some reading will help your arguments out. Learn before you attempt to educate others.
