for ur first rail find somthin flat and low enuf so you can;t nut yourself. its all about comitment and confidence tho, if you dont think you can do it then you will fall off. get urself a full 90 degrees

straight, short, shotgun rails are the best to learn on. you wont get it right away, so dont be gay like skierd00d and give up, cause you will get it eventually
my intire crew waited for his ass at the bottem of the hill and beat the shit out of him. i broke his poles agianst a tree, and we snapped one of his skis. fucker got uppercutted so much. he was bleeding from his eyes and shit, crying like a little pussy. i busted out a body slam on his ass and broke both of his arms. the ski patroler broke up the fight and clipped all of our tickets. we where gonna beat the shit out of the patroller but my mom came to pick us up.

yah, i agree 100% with k2. short, strait rails are the way to learn. when your on the rail, look at the end of the rail, and never look down on your boot.this will help you stay strait, and spread your legs, and put your weight evenly divided on each leg. slide on both inside edges if you have to. also, try a sqaure, wood post to start. thatll help with your balence, but metal is a big adgusment.

i learned on a 10ft piece of pvc pipe. you don't slide as fast so it's easier to get the feel of being on the rail and sliding. it helps when workin on switch outs too

if u keep crashing its probly because your not getting on directly over your boots or your not looking at the end of the rail(That makes a lot of difrence...)

at first its just tough on urself... go small, and make sure ur ready to fall... its not that hard once u put ur mind to it. but it gets much more difficult with each progressive rail.

yea, well fruitbooting helped me do rails, all I think about is the pop, the slide, and the landing.. the more centered you are on your skis the easier it is.. and lean forward

skill is envolved, but you dont need much.
the hardest part for me is getting on. the lengh of the skis is the hard part. get snowblades and you should be fine.

Hard because you are stupid like me and try to lean into the mountain. it is all a mental thing because you need to lean down the mountain

very hard! it took me about 4 years to learn (i kinda suck). what helped me was to start on a really small funbox so your skis have more under them and you need less balance, then i worked up to the bigger funbox, then i went to small flat rails. that worked for me. i also think that repetition is key.

its so hard but then you gradually get it down and anything is doable!

my prob is the metal i lean back to much and mo confidence.
This is weird because i have plenty of confidence to hit a 50 or 60 ft kicker.
I cant explain it.

do you have to worry about catching an edge on a steal rail?

some people get it way quicker and some don't, you'll just have to see for yourself..

i tried it for the first time this year (minus a couple times last year getting my ass kicked) yesterday. I did it on a fun box and i never fell, sure it probably looked dumb because i wasn't 100% used to it, but i just kept hiking back up and trying again. I did the best when i turned complete 90 so do that too. Get yourself pumped up for it and tell yourself that you can do it. Thats what i did and i never fell and got hurt, unlike last year when i was a scared pussy and then fell and busted my ankle up.

Actually sliding the rail is easy(most of the time). the hard part is committing to get on at 90 degrees and to get the rail under your feet. Once you get it, keep doing the same thing over and over. This will help your confidence and you will stick rails everytime.

I started grinding rails on inline skates which really helped me out, you might want to try that out

i actually think jumping onto the rail is easier than just riding on. i always tried riding on, but then my feet go too far forward. when i jump on i'm normally at the perfect stance. anybody else find it easier to learn by jumping instead of riding

I just learned on Saturday how to slide rails. It was way easy for me. On the inrun keep the rail centered between your skis, pop of the jump, throw your hand forward whichever way you slide, lean forward and look at the end of the rail. I can do the Blue and Green rails at Snowbird. One is about 7 feet long x 2 feet high, and the other is probably 10 x 6ish. You just have to be confident, and visualize.

yeah just go at the rail and have a positive mindset and think im gonna grease this motherfucker, and then make sure you turn 90 degrees and look at the end of the rail and concentrate on keepin ur balance and if you cant land metal practice on wood first so you get used to slidin that way

There's one thing I'm wondering about this...what do all those metal rails do to the skis?
It's all well and good if you're sponsored, but I can't afford to buy new skis if I mess up the ones I (am about to) have!

i think its a good idea to start off with PVC and work your way up to metal rails. the PVC won't hurt ur skis if u mess up bad and its just less intimidating.

You know something that would really make me applaud? A guy gets stuck in quicksand, then sinks, then suddenly comes shooting out, riding on water skis. How do they do that?

just learn on a flat, straight rail. Do it when no one is around to avoid embarassment.

i personally learned on a box then moved to a super waxed wood rail.....once you get the balance down its easy to repeat but its mainly gutz..just commit...and i did find that you catch more on wood and pvc than metal and has anyone realized that round rails are easier than flat or double pipe?? or am i just wierd....i always slide off flat and double pipe ones early but i can hold round rails like its my job...anyone else??
