i have the complete opposite opinion. to me fakie = switch nollie. and switch = wrongside forwards. which makes sense to call backwards skiing switch. now, wouldnt skiing backwards be unnatural? it is not natural to ski with your back facing down the hill, cause your gunna freakin' run into something, so how can it not be unnatural. i have never heard of anyone calling a grab switch unless they have taken off the jump riding on there switch side, so maybe thats just because of my location but it doesnt make any sense.
i appologize for the incoherence in that argument. feel free to sort out the sentences to correspond with his arguments

I just think saying something just cause a pro says it doesnt mean you should say it.

ok, time to set the recond straight with my extensive knowledge of the wonderful world of skateboarding...
cab refers to a caballerial, a trick coined by the infamous crooked neck homeboy himself, steve caballero in 1979 or so. it was done on transition, pop off the nose after a rock fakie, frontside three, though the rotation is backside, since it starts chest opening first, were calling it frontside. since then, people have been doing them on flat, over stairs, and a certain pj ladd has been doing them with bigflips...which is absolutley unnecessarily absurd. but regardless, the term cab really cannot be applied to skiing in any way. to tell you the truth, it doesnt work too well in snowboarding either since it refers to actually popping fakie.
so no dice on cab mates...no dice at all.

why do you say it is a frontside spin? the caballerail(sp)? i'd say fakie backside 3.

i say frontside because it tends to refer to where your chest is facing. like fs 5050s, your chest face the rail. fs 180s, your chest opens first. so by this logic, cab would be frontside.

First Eric Pollard bitches about comps halting progression, then Anthony Boronowski tries to say that rails are just a phase, now Pep whines about the true meaning of switch/cab/fakie. Why are skiers getting all gay and talkiing about their feelings all the time. you guys are treating the sport like its some kind of social movement. We all need to think about why we really ski. Is it to have fun with our buddies and push ourselves? Or are we too worried about being "core" or "genuine" to realize that skiing is not a philisophical ideal. The whole purpose of freeskiing was to break away from the rigidity and structure of moguls skiing. We arent supposed to have definite terms for everything, if we don't know what to call it then weve accomplished something.

^^ I think the pro skiers are just trying to progress the sport the way they think it should be progressed, skiing has just gone off of the map within the last few years, as seen so far new things have already integrated, (such as landing swith(cab, fakie (as being discussed)) in powder, they are tons of new things that will branch off with the sport of skiing, i think the pros are just trying to center that attention/focus in a way they want to see the sport branch off and progress.
Its just like jazz back in the 1920's- 70's. It started off, went into the swing era, be bop era, and then hit the 50's and 60's and totally went in all sorts of directions, creating music no one could have even imagine back in the 30's or 40's. It just exploded and skiing is seeing progression and new/old things each year.

Let me put it this way...
Switch, by definition and in other sports, is used to described something as UNNATURAL. The reason people call or describe things as switch or unnatural, is because when you watch the trick, you don't know whether it's that person's natural or unnatural version. One person's natural is another person's unnatural. You need to call it "switch" so that people know you're doing it unnatural. "Switch" is a distinguishing word used when, at first glance, you don't know whether a trick is natural or unnatural.
With skiing, it's pretty damn OBVIOUS that skiing backwards is not something that is natural. It never has been and never will be. Therefore, calling backwards skiing "switch" is a bastardizing of the true meaning of the word "switch". That is why there exists the term "FAKIE", which is what people should have used from the beginning, but for certain pro skiers back in the 90's thinking "switch" sounded cooler -- bad reason if you ask me, because now everyone in skateboarding, in-line, snowboarding, etc. think we're looney.

if you think about how it is in skateboarding, and reason it out, then it's clearly fakie. But who cares? we all know what you are talking about anyway. I just say switch because it sounds cooler and is easier to say.

pep doesnt care. i asked him.
seriously.
and snowboarders ruined fakie and switch. so dont use them as a reference.
in SKATEBOARDING, the original sport, switch was short for switch STANCE.
it meant they switched up the way they rode. fakie was a switched stance nollie.
snowboarders didnt like saying switch 3 so they said fakie three or cab.
then they took that shit and ruined it by calling switch 7s "cab sevens"
so yeah, we for the most part do switch spins.
not fakie.
and we can do nollies, as well as pop onto a rail fakie.
if we have the skill.
