my friend's brother watched all the extra features and stuff, apparently the actual movie is only like a 1/4 of the whole story. that movie is way cool tho.

You can figure out the whole movie and think you have it, but then you'll realize that there is something that goes against what you think. Then you go back and figure the whole movie out again, but then you find something else preventing it from being that way. Good movie.

of course we all want to understand every movie we see, but if someone tells you, then the movie really didn't have the impact on you that you thought it did.

it's hard to explain, but it's just something you get or you don't. there are so many classics like that.

i saw it like a year ago but my analysis was that it was about time travel(indirectly) and parallel universes...donnie was basically able to live his life in a parralel universe and determine the outcome in his original world...you need to understand the concept of parralel universes to understand what i'm saying, but donnie could basically view the effects certain choices would make on his life, happening in a differant universe(these are actually taking place, but in a differant world, which aren't effecting anything in other parralel universes)...consequently he could choose his path in his orignal world that would best benefit his life and that of the people around him. i'm not sure why he was gifted...maybe a mental imbalance that granted such a wierd gift... thats my take on it

oh i think the kid who said that originally wasnt saying "red eye" was a company. he said it was like the donnie darko plane companys logo or something i dont think thats what he meant.

what did you mean?

i just thought the little thing on the plane was like a decoration. for show.

red eye is pretty insignificant in the movie.... just a term for a late night flight.. nothing to do with company or logo... as for the swirly design.. i dont know... and to understand the movie just watch it a feew more times.. each time you watch it you figure out more and put pieces together. theres alot of meaning behind it

here's the way i understood it (i did some research and watched it multiple times)

firstly there are two universes in this move, the tangent universe, and the primary universe. The primary universe is the universe which we are all living in, the tangent universe is the universe that is parallel to the primary (a lot of the movie takes place in the tangent universe.)

now the jet engine flies through Donnies room, this is a spontaneously appearing item which is a sign that the tangent universe has been created. at this point, the tangent universe is an exact copy of the primary universe, they are parallel.

the tangent universe has chosen donnie darko as the reciever of the jet engine, which he must return back through the portal. https://www.newschoolers.com/ns/forums/replythread/thread_id/156393/

frank (the rabbit) has died in the tangent universe, so he goes back in time to help donnie return the engine. frank is the manipulated dead, since he died in the tangent universe.

the manipulated living are all of those who are connected to donnie (since he is the chosen reciever).
the manipulated living aid in the return of the jet engine.

at the end of the movie, donnie ends the tangent universe (which has been going on for 28 days) by returning the jet engine. now that the tangent universe is over, the primary universe resumes from the point before the 28 days.

another note, once the tangent universe was created, the 28 days were set in a parallel or alternate reality. if you notice, all the characters seem to be living as if they have already lived those moments before (as if the 28 days have repeated). also the tangent universe was not created by the jet engine, the jet engine only flew from the primary universe into the tangent, as an artifact that must be returned. the creation of the tangent universe was not explained during the movie.
