Canon XL2

i was thinking about getting an canon XL2 and was wondering if anyone had any advice about the camera or is there something out there that is just as equal to

the equivalent to the XL2 is the Panasonic DVX-100A, but as far as choice of lenses and stuff, the XL2 dominates cause there aren't that many lenses out there for the Panasonic but there are like 349857534374095743 lenses for the XL2. other than that they are pretty much the same. oh and the XL2 is beastly.

because I like pooh.

the xl2 is sickly sick and fun to use. it is quite big, as previously stated, but it has a shoulder rest and stuff lol.

i haven't used a dvx100a but i've heard its actaully better than every other camera. the reliability and durability of panasonics has been noted as being quite excellent. but i think if you're going ot drop 5000+ on a camera, you should ask people who really know what they're talking about. there are some people on the site like that, but yeah, do some reasearch and read a lot of reviews and ask techies and stuff too. do it all. it's a huge investment.

it doesnt look like a cam ud wanna use for filming skiing. i've heard people say that who have used it

Anyway, a gas station we pass. We got gas, and ran off to get grub.It was a nice little pub in the middle on nowhere. Anywhere woulda been better. I ordered enchiladas and I ate 'em, Ali had the fruit punch.

I don't think that i,m going to get the XL2 it looks like it would be harder then hell ski with and the fact that it is $4000 is also another set back i think that i'll get the cannon Gl2 it looks for skier freedly.

Nah man, just get a good pack, and it does not matter. I ski with my XL2 all the time, but you have to have a very good pack, and maybe even custom make some foam for that in can be snug.

the XL2 is the movie camera for filmmakers on a budget. such an amazing cam, it has the potential to create film-like movies.

if youre looking to go prosumer, the panasonic dvx100a cant be beat. it films in both 30p and 24p, 30 being a very high uality dv look while the 24p being amazing uality, better than any prosumer hd camera. it looks almost identical to 16mm, which is what most ski moves are filmed in for a reference. its light weight, smaller than a vx2100, and not much more expensive. so yea, go that route, get a century fisheye, and youll have the best thing going.

go for the canon gl2 its still professional quality and but cheaper and more portable especially for filmin for skiing ..i think it retails at like $2000

ok definitely do not get the xl2 unless you have that much money to blow, cuz it sure is an awesome camera but for skiing you dont need that big of a camera, cuz its too big and since its 4000 dollars you wouldnt want to risk anything happening to it on the slopes. if you are looking for an excellent camera that is easy to use and lightweight i would definitely go with the vx2100 everyone loves it who uses it and its way better than the gl2. if you really want to learn about cameras to use go to www.skateperception.com then click on reviews and there you go. i know its a skating site but skate filming is so much more advanced than skiing just cuz its been around for so much longer. anyway sorry about the length but the sony vx2100 is surely the right choice.

^yah but most of the people on that site only like it because the death lense is more effective on there. plus they are interlaced-shooting junkies.

come on, seriously... do you think this kid is actually going to get an XL2 if he's asking for advice on a skiing forum? absolutely not. it's just another kid who is bored and has big dreams and wishlists, so he posted saying that he wants to get one.

if this kid was in any way, shape, or form serious about getting an XL2 or any other camera for that matter, he would be researching for himself and joining videography forums and reading up/asking questions on there.

oh, and btw.. don't speculate about things of which you have no idea. if you have never used the XL2 (or any other professional camera) personally, then don't respond with reasons why or why not it's a good camera.

ok 24p does not look identical to 16mm. it's simply a different frame rate. And the dvx actually always records in 30fps. Most ski movies are not filmed on 16mm. Sure msp and pbp shoot some 16mm, but that's not all that ends up in the movies. And saying that the dvx is smaller and lighter than the vx21 is also dumb, they're pretty much the same the same size. and the vx21 has better low light performance. I have used all of these cameras, and my preference is the vx21. I was impressed with the footage in 11th hour though, that was dvx. And also saying that the dvx's 24p looks better than prosumer hd cams is dumb too, Maybee in low light because the sony hd's drop off to black real fast. You're trying to use frame rate as resolution.

skate filming is no more advancred than any kind of filming, it's just that it's more popular because it has been around longer than freeride skiing videography. they use the same cameras, same technology in every way.

I dont watch a whole lot of skate videos, but from what i've seen lately (correct me if i'm wrong) skiing videos are actually progressing. Sure new skate tricks and progression of the SPORT are in new skate videos, but all skate videos are; are a low-angle follow cam w/ fish-eye lens. I HATE THAT SHOT! Find something new...

With every new ski movie I see, I'm blown away by the creative cinematography. It's not just the same old boring shit shot after shot.

Oh..and as for the camera question, I agree with someone above; if you're asking the advice in a ski forum, you're either full of shit, or just have more money than brains. I love my GL2...that's all I can say.

The XL2 has some serious design drawbacks.

It's virtually impossible to shoot anything handheld with it because of the design. Shoulder mounted footage is mediocre at best, its really designed to be used with a tripod almost always.

It has no LCD screen, might not seem like a big deal but there are a lot of drawbacks to not having one.

Getting great footage out of it takes extensive knowledge and patience to set it up correctly. Even when you posess the knowledge and patience, it's very difficult to get the same picture that other cameras provide. Such as the DVX100a or VX2100.
