Being Irish, I guess I should resent the Notre Dame nickname 'The Fighting Irish.' After all, how long do you think nicknames like 'The Bargaining Jews' or 'The Murdering Italians' would last? Only the Ironic Irish could be so naively honset. I get the feeling that Notre Dame came real close to naming itself 'The Fuckin Drunken, Thick-Skulled, Brawling, Short-Dicked Irish'

ok, im pretty sure this is it. ive been fucking around with it for an hour or so, i hope its not incoherent... anyway

Start with the horizontal distance you need to clear. Call it X.

The time the car will be in the air is
T = X / (V cos A)
A is the ramp angle from horizontal and V is the initial velocity.

One must also satisfy
V sin A = g (T/2)
because that it the vertical velocity component change in time (T/2)
Therefore
T = 2 V sin A/ g

Putting the two equaqtions together,
X / (V cos A) = 2 V sin A / g

X = 2 (V^2/g) sin A cos A = (V^2/g) sin 2A

You can use that equation to find combinations of V and A that work.

Note that sin 2A cannot exceed 1, and it has its greatest value when
A = 45 degrees. That will give you the lowest value of V needed for a given gap X.

The same equation comes into play when you are talking about the range and optimum launch angle of a thrown projectile.

A long jumper will also travel farthest if his/her takeoff angle is about 45 degrees.

and if you want to know your speed, it taks some effort, but it goes like this. hae several people like stand along the inrun. time 1 second going down it and mark the spot where you stared that 1 second and mark the spot at the end of 1 second. measure it. take the distance and divide it by 1.47 and you know your MPH

hmmm... do this as close to where the ramp would be or is, if possible. for example, lets say you went 50 feet in that 1 second, then you were going 34 mph

i did that once on blackcomb. i was like the secod person in the park that morning, caught mad air on this freshly groomed whatever it was, landed waaayyy down onto some flats, and just bailed, little bit of blood/mucus mixture comming out of my nose

i thought you were talking about a road gap, always strait a road gap in-run, but for tables, always let someone else hit a table in the morning before you, so they can eat shit and not you, and then you'll see how much speed you need to clear it

haha thats way to complicated just for such a simple thing, just goin balls out is a better idea, now go outside and stick ur head in the snow before u feel like a dork for doing all that work for such a simple concept, and thats all messed up anyway because u dont account for air resistance or friction, ill go stick my head in the snow...

those formulas might work, i looked at em for about 10 seconds and my eyes hurt. i am a big fan for just strightlining it too but sometimes i get curias as to what speed you really do need to clear some of these gaps that are being done these days. the easiest formula i have found is...


takeoff speed * (sine of the angle of kicker from ground) = vertical speed

plug that into this formula to find your hang time


vertical speed / 4.9 = hangtime


still with me? good, we are almost done. now we find the horizontal speed like we did in the first equation only difference is cosine instead of sine.

takeoff speed * (cosine kicker angle from ground) = horizaontal speed

last step! multiply the horizontal speed by the hangtime and you get the distance you cover!

horizontal speed * hangtime = distance

sounds dificult but its not to terible really. oh one note, all my distance measurements are in meters and meters per second. so do like before with the seeing how far you go in one second then pace off the distance. one step is about one meter, so 18 steps is 18 meters a second. for more acurate resulates you may want to bring a tape measurer. oh and dont sue me if you kill yourself, just trying to help out.

or you could just hit it balls to the wall ;0

once you've been jumping for awhile, judging the speed you will need becomes sort of a natural thing..
with mountain biking I always used to be worried about gap jumping and what speed I should be at and all that, but after awhile times I was able just to know how fast I needed to go

yes i know it does not have friction or air resistance. friction is easy to solve tho. you dont have to worry about it when you are on the groupnd if you know your speed, and once you are in the air it becomes air resitance. however i have not even taken a full semester of physics (yet) so i dont know how to figuramate those do hickeys out. however i whould recondmend wearing a spandax one peice body suit to cut down wind resitance as much as possible. also it should be neon pink, yellow and purple. this causes the speed of light to increase around you and adds a few feet onto the distance you cover. try it out, it works!

you would probably want to use momentum forumlas to figure this out and not simple ones based on velocity and angles. jumps usually are not flat and on an angle, instead the transition is curved, and changes. also, you aren't taking into account how high you start up on the inrun, the slope of the inrun, friction, the length of the skis, air resistance, drag coefficient, and the curvature of the earth. let's also not forget that the skis may be waxed or unwaxed, another important factor. the weight of the skier is also important, and again, this variable depends upon the height above sea level, as gravity will change with height. calculate wisely.

cork you're talking about how far back you should be to GET to the speed you need to go. all factors such as friction, weight, waxing, ski length, etc. go out the window. some people argue about weight, but in the air, as long as you aren't covering over 100 feet, it doesn't much matter if you are 100 pounds or 200. Air resistance will affect your landing by at most 2 feet, unless there is a huge wind comin right up the mountain right at you as you jump.
and as for altitude affecting your jump, it'll change your distance by a few inches. if that. sure you can calculate down to the 3rd decimal point, but then you're spending too much time geekin it up doing math problems and not enough time huckin it to show up your buds.

Instead of using a 'gap calculator' and physics, use your experience (I take it you've taken jumps before - else I'd start smaller than being towed by a car ;-) ), and use LOGIC! The physics you can get into if you want to get into the minute precision - and it'll still be like predicting the weather: there's way too many variables to take into account if you want to get it precisely right! Oh, and Raptor - wasn't trying to be an asshole in my earlier post - I'm very much for a friendly attitude on Newschoolers.com!
