Kicking horse or fernie?

I was planning a trip out west this winter,to ski powder, and I found that kicking horse and fernie are probably the best for powder. I compared facts and shit, but I still can't decide.

So post your experiences and opinions.

I went to both resorts 3 years ago. Went during december and the snow conditions were pretty bad. Couldn't ski top to bottom at fernie but the top had tons of snow. The terrian there is really sick and the town is better than Kicking horses. Last year Fernie had a pretty late start, so I would make sure before you go to either one to check on the conditions or go later in the season. I'll be living in Bozeman MT this winter and I plan on driving back up to Fernie later this season when the snow is good. ONly about a 6 hour drive.

I would actually try and go to Jackson Hole or Whistler if I were planning a trip out west. Go to Jackson for the steep and deep, go to whistler if you want to party hard and ski. I prefer JH. Best mountain I've ever been to. The terrian there is like no other. Nothing else really compares and its the last year of the Tram so you should go check that out.

Well I cant really look out for the best wheather then drive there, because I live in eastern Canada. I has hoping that if I planned early I could get better deals...And Im not sure about going to whistler, I have heard alot of people complaining about the wet powder. But what about kicking horse? How was your experience?

kicking horse is real good, but no park and 3000 vert feet of icy run out, fernie has a park and tons of snow but not as much alpine terrain

I've skied both and if you hit Kicking Horse right it can be epic. I had probably one of my top 3 days ever there. The week I spent at Fernie was incredible also but oberall I say go to Kicking Horse. No park, but if your from the east (ice) coast like me, when you head out west you really don't care about the park. Pick Kicking horse.

why can't you go to both? if you're driving anyways... and its not hard to find last minute cheap places to stay. kicking horse has a hostel, and there are some super cheap motels. like 40 bucks a night. fernie has a hostel too.

I'm a bigger fan of KH but both are sick, and both have airport shuttle services from Calgary, ultimately it's your choice, they're both the shit!

and castle mmountain is close by as well, like 1 hour away from fernie. i love that place, steep, deep and cheap! they had a real shitty year last year tho. theres a hostel u could stay at or there are a ton of cabins u can rent. not alot of ppl have heard about this place, but trust me, its super sweet, has the longest continous fall line in canada, but no park. its a little highewr up than fernie, so if its raining in fernie, itll be snowing at castle

Well, this is just me. But I am pulling for Fernie mostly, just because I have a place there, and I spend half my time in Calgary, and then Half in Fernie, and I can;t get enough Fernie.

Alls I can say about Fernie last year was that it was pretty much shit, save the park (it was gnarly time 14), but yes, we had a sad snow year. We had a few dabbles in deep snow and those days were so great. Fernies terrain is not too super, but you will never find a better groomer EVER. Heartland is pretty much fucking epic.

Hikes are always really easy at Fernie, and Mammoth's Head should be rather enjoyable as it is almost never ridden. And a short trip into Fish bowl is almost mandetory.

If you catch Fernie on a good year for snow, its pretty much rad. Watch out for the rain though, it gets that way when it gets to be like minus two. But even though it rains alot when its a little bit warm, means that when its a little biut cold it is dumping.

Me I would say go to the Horse though, just cuz I haven't been there. So it would be radder because its different. Plus,I do not want anyone to steal my mountain even though I stole it from the locals. hahaha.

yeah fernie did have a pretty good park, they had a pretty nice rail yard with some harder jibs, a few really nicely made kickers, a step up, butter table thinger (iono the name) and then a fuckin sick wall. there was also a few lil kickers and step ups scattered across the mountain that were fun

and on top of that the attitude of everyone was soooo much better than the east coast, everyone was just friendly and happy to be skiing

yeah you'd fly into calgary, and then take a greyhound to either one. and there's buses in between too. both are rad, and usually have similar conditions.... ie if it snows at fernie its probably gonna snow at kh. either way you're gonna have an amazing trip.

The town at Fernie is better, but if the snow is really good, go to Kicking Horse, if it's so-so the i would go Fernie.

From my experiences kicking horse is a little over rated...it has good points and bad...if you dont go to many good ski hills kicking horse would be great but when you get around alot(haha get around) id pick fernie over kicking horse

fernie is sold the fuck out. kicking horse is not (for the time being) a weekend warrior heaven. the hill is full of gnarly shit. a black diamond there is closed avi terrain anywhere else. if you hit fernie during the day of an epic dump and youll have a blast. hit kicking horse 2 weeks after a good snowfall and your still gonna find fresh lines. it honestly is a hidden gem. however when the place becomes ice and bumps its not the best place to be. check ahead on when where the snow is. try to pick weekdays or low key weekends. fernie when its packed is about as much fun as licking a cheese grater.

well how much scrilla do you have to spend on Backcountry touring? Because at Fernie, there is Island Lake Lodge, which is pretty much a potload of funds, and then thur are easy easy hikes, all over the ploace. I dont know anything about kicking horse though.

Tour of BC for newbies? Best thing to do would be a day of cat skiing with fat skis. If you've never ridden powder and know nothing about snow/avy conditions please stay in bounds or you'll get hurt.

Kicking horse in bounds stuff is pretty lame.
if you go to either super bowl or fuez bowl, or the next one over. Nothing but sick lines for days after a snow fall.

tyler obviously you haven't skiied fernie, massive avy danger occurs even in bounds on big storms they close parts of hill for days.

feuz bowl slib on us last year and was closed for 4 days for more bombing. it doesnt matter at these places. inbounds or outtabounds right after a large dump shit is always sketchy. hiking outtabounds at the horse without proper knowledge after it has snowed it not a smart idea, it gets pretty serious out there. to say people are just making a big deal about it is immature. going outtabounds into gnarly terrain illequpit and unpreparred is a death wish for you and the others who are using the area that day.

kicking horse will be ur best bet
i was there last year and it had snowed 2 weekes before and there was still a lot of pow to be had, its the sickest hill ever, to bad its a sketchy 3 hour drive to get there

Even if there's a couple days of no new snow, the bowls are super fun for flatground stuff, and there are little lips and drops to be found all over the place.
And on the lower quad chair, you can switch carve on the wiiiiiiide open blue runs.
It's like a perfect slope angle to go pretty fast and get better at it.

iv spent about 15 days at each resort, id say kicking horse for sure. longer runs, steeper sections, allover better terrain.. powder stays around for heaps longer too, we were getting freshies 4 days after snow, you just have to know where to look. the only thing lacking is a terrain park, but there's so much cool natural terrain and hits that i didnt mind.

My vote goes tothe horse. I was there in January last year on a day that the locals wer complaining about in the gondola. It was the lightest snow I have ever skied on. It has become my new favorite mountain. though fernie was before that, though I havn't been there in a few years. If either has snow you can't go wrong. castle can also be epic, but snow is harder to come by there, but when there is snow. wow

Either places have really sick terrain, You just have to know where to look,

try fish bowl at fernie

or hike to terminator ridge on kicking horse

just to start,

or if you want really sick un-skied shit go to....

you are right, it is more dangerous but because there may be a patrol nearby people expect to get rescued, i'll watch for you ina treewell somewhere

kicking horse definitely impressed me...town of Golden sorta sucks compared to Fernie. There's also no park at Kicking Horse....and a good tree jib at Fernie...
