Ways to increase waterproofing ability?

what are some different ways to improve the waterproofing on outerwear, and how much can you improve it, i no there are some spray on things that you can get, so if you know any ways please post them here

use dwr (durable water repellant) sprays such as techtron, scotchguard, or revivex.

^do those sprays discolor the stuff at all like make it darker?, and if something has 5,000 waterproofing after using the spray what would the new rating be

nah, they won't discolor anything. i think you're confusing water repellancy and waterproofing. dwr is simply a coating on most waterproof fabrics that makes water bead up and roll off before it soaks into the fabric. in my knowledge, waterproofing has to do with how much water actually soaks into the fabric. if you're that concerned about waterproofing get a gore-tex or hellytech 10 garment.

There is this stuff I got, cuz my jacket was lacking. I can't quite remember the name but you can get it at almost any outerwear store. If your in Canada you find it all over.

All you do is wash your jacket and throw this stuff in the dryer on low. It bakes into the clothing and makes it dryer than a lesbian around a pack of doods.

O yeah and it doesn't mess with your clothing at all.

Well obviously a good jacket is a smart investment. I had a Burton Ronin jacket last year though and I wore it out in the rain n stuff. After a while your jacket looses it's ability to make rain bead up and roll off. This stuff revitalises your jacket and makes it keep you dry again. Plus it's a cheap way to stay dry. It cost like $20 at most when compared to a new $400 dollar jacket

Anyway, he's prolly got a Siver jacket, and the most waterproofing they have available it 5,000. So that stuff would be a good thing to buy.

This stuff works. BUT!! The moment you add a coating of any type of aftermarket waterproofing substance it adds a coating, and stops all Breathability. So you get lots of waterproofness, but no breathability. So if your all hot a sweaty, all the condensation will not be able to escape, and you'll be wet on the inside anyway.

BUT!! If your jacket wasn't that great to start off with, and wasn't that breathable anyhow, then it might be a good expirement to see how it works for you. Cause it will work

OR

If it is an older multi-ply jacket that is wearing out and "used" to be waterproof. Nixwax also makes a product that you add to the water when you wash your jacket in the washing machine, and basicly cleans out the jacket, and cleans out all those micro-pore 3-ply nylon system, and rejufantes (sp) the waterproofness of your jacket.

ok thanks everybody, that helped a lot so basically i could get a good jacket in the first place, or get a "bad" jacket and make it waterproof, but unbreathable, i think i'll look for a good jacket for now, but i'll still consider this option

Kev that's tha nixwax stuff I am talking about. It's also designed specifically for breathable garments. I had no problem with built up moisture when I wore my gear with nixwax washed in. Just get a killa jacket though, use the nixwax at the end of the season

the sprays do not increase the water proofness. if you have a 20000mm jacket it can wear out a bit and the top layer will absorb water but you will not get wet. it is still 20000mm. you then go and use nixwax etc to make the outerlayer repellant so your jacket doesnt get heavy. it will still be 20000mm

nixwax doesnt make shit not breathable. it just causes the outer layer to repel water so your jacket doesnt get heavy and feel wet all the time. if you dont nixwax a 20000mm jacket it will still keep you dry. i guess a shitty jacket kinda would be more water proof. but it all depends on teh fabric used to make it. if its super tight it could work, but only for a week. just get a good jacket. 15000+ is quality
