Powder, please explain this.

I dont mean to complain, but the "Powder Video Awards" don't seem too in tune with what the common opinion is. On this site at least, the general opinion is that MSP makes decent movies, but the other options out there are at least as good if not better even with the gross discrepency in funding. I personally am sick of slo-mo, tired of the glam, and fed up with the "lining up with sponsors". Everytime i see Mark Abma on Salomons i want to puke. Since when do the film companies get to fuck around with the pro skiers? They only way i can see this changing is the companies financing it all themselves, and that isn't possible while still making a profit. This has got me pissed off.

i agree that msp is not a good representation of the freeride scene, but abma is skiing for salomon now. just thought id clerify that

Hey wayne, better check on that. I don't think the 24-40 demographic is past the newschool scene. Know anyone who was 21-25 in 2000 when newschool skiing really hit the scene? What do you think they're doing now? Powder continues to aim for the soul of skiers, not just older skiers. Boy those guys at powder put on Superpark for the oldies huh?

^1. They didn't put on SuperPark this year.
2. The coverage they gave it last year was pitiful. No article, like 4 pages of pictures. Look at the coverage Freeze gives Parkasauras. Seriously Powder shralping magazine can no longer be described as "hip" or "with it" by people who are actually into the newschool aspect of our sport. At the very least we're grossly underrepresented.

You ever stop to think that no ski area wanted to put the money up to build a park that was worhty of super park status last year? Did the fact it rained everyday hte year before impact the photos that they had to choose from the year before?

Think before you type.

Powder doesnt focus on big mtn, and they dont ignore the jib movement either. They focus on the entire sport of skiing and all its aspects. Because of this only the truely ground breaking amazing feats and photos makes it into Powder.

in my opinion, MSP has some sick heli shots of tables and shit, but that's all. after that their movies suck ass.
the editing sucks, the music sucks, they put in a bunch of shitty clips of shitty skiers like Wendy Fisher and shit, and their movies are just boring. I enjoi watching Tanner do switch 5 double grabs and Rainville doing cork 7 leading tru tail in super slow mo, but I don't enjoy wathcing 10 minutes of the same exact thing with shitty music playing (McConkey's Part)

yeah dude, they gave almost every single award to MSP. redtape and high five weren't even mentioned. God, I hate MSP so so much.

i cant take him[liam downey] seriously cuz his name reminds me of that downy bear from back when i was a kid -d loc

I don't deny there are bad things in the US right now, hell, 51% of the country to be exact. But god damnit, our country being fat is NOT a problem. I do't give a shit how fat people are. hell, fat kids are harder to kidnap, that means our country is safer.

Number one abma didn't switch because of MSP. Both K2 and Salomon sponsor msp's films.
Powder magazine's award's are about the entire sport, the soul of skiing. Of course they are not going to give the movie of the year to Plehouse or Level 1 because they only represent a part of the sport...jibbing. Powder represents it all(superpark will be back) and that is why the last two years TGR and MSP have won movie of the year, because those two companies focus on both jibbing and big mountain, young and old, travel and home and on and on.
MSP and TGR shoot better quality footage in more amazing and unheralded terrain. To argue this is just plain dumb.

The Powder Video Awards are about skiing and all its aspects. They are objective awards that most people tend to agree with.

Skier of the year last year Mark Abma...who can argue...no one.

Best cinematography last year...MSP...no one can argue that.

This isn't a praise MSP response, its a don't rip on Powder Magazine for putting on the best video awards ceremony in all of skiing and for putting on the greatest jibbing event in all of skiing. Last year there was some issues with insurance and resorts willing to partake, but it will be back.

Damn.

Sucks that Powder couldn't do superpark this year, but it's not because they didn't want to.
I agree their coverage in the mag sucked, but they did put out whole DVD's of superpark stuff, which was cool.

I'm not really surprised that Powder picks MSP for movie awards, Powder is balanced between big mountain powder stuff, and newschool stuff. MSP has had good representation of both areas.

I'd expect a change in their awards this year though, there are a lot of good movies out with a good variaty of skiing in them. I'd bet on PBP or maybe even Level 1 winning this year.

Bullshit. Follow the money trail and it all becomes clear. The Powder Video Awards are about as objective as a white, southern, racist judge presiding over the case of a white police officer charged with beating a black man.

Or maybe Steve Winter threatened to sue Powder if he didn't win. Not that Steve Winter ever threatens lawsuits or anything like that.

there's a good amount of big mountain in war. jp auclair has a bunch of lines, and abma and mike douglas do a lot. Plus there is SETH.

But if powder represents all aspects, why don't they have stuff for best urban jib or soemthing. they had best trick and that went to candide, but it should go beyond that.

grant, i did think before i typed. think about this: why would a resort want to put up the money to fund a superpark if they knew the event wasn't going to get it's fair share of coverage in the magazine? unless sick photos get published and articles get written in the magazine, there's no point for the sponsoring mountain to even hold the event. last year's coverage in powder sucked, and don't tell me it was because of the rain, because i can't count how many SICK SICK video shots the film companies got from that very event.

don't get me wrong, cuz i'm all about balance, and what Powder aspires to be is sick. however, in reading the content you can see that any athlete features they do are always with MSP athletes, and that most of the articles are dedicated to covering big mountain skiing. FREEZE, before it died, covered everyone, from Mystery Superstar EP to putting McConkey on the cover of their last issue (which featured a ton of content and bios of big mountain rippers). that's the kinda diversity we needed, and that's the hole that Powder needs to fill if i'm gonna start my subscription up again.

Freeze didn't = Powder

No one can expect Powder to step in and start covering the shit Freeze did. Not too quickly, anyhow.

The rain was a bitch at the last superpark. There was only so much you could do w/ the flat light. That week sucked so much several riders didn't perform their best. That's not Powder's fault. Also remember, most of the photography in Powder is submitted by freelance shooters. You can't create product that just simply isn't there.

Just my thoughts anyhow...
