Why, in America, is it a big deal to graduate from highschool?

just wondering, I see these movies and documentaries on graduation from highschool? Do you get something like a degree or something?

yeah, I know up north here eh, we don't go nowhere unless we at leats got ourselves a college degree. Even a bachelor's won't get you too much.

well, oyu get a diploma which apparently is so hard for ppl to actually get, that it makes it very valuable. see, with a high school education, you could definately hold the dream of being a mc donalds manager.

Its a pretty big deal in Canada too, for people who arnt going on to the post graduate education. it marks the begining of their lives as an adult. Its a cultural right of passage. much like how one African (I think, I read this a while ago) trib where to become a man you have to oraly pleasure all the men in your tribe so that you can absorb their vitality. Graduating highschool is pretty much the same thing.

What i mean is that the work/lessons i learned at school could have been compressed into about 2 years not 5. there was soo much fucken around, lunch was an hour long, to do nothing. and yes it is important here to finish the whole of highschool, but we don't have a spesh graduation, its not biggy finishing highschool here is what i mean.

Yah people have said it but I'll say it again... graduating is just stoping to realize you've completed a major stage in your education/life and I guess it kind of gives you some self gratification that you achieved something and maybe will make you go on to achieve more. But in my view celebrating this mediocracy just allows it to be more acceptable to be mediocre.

Unless you use this to go onto further education, then graduating and working, or dropping out and working is the same shit and graduating doesn't mean a thing.

I think he means more of the ceremony when you gradute like prom. It is mostly the us that has a huge gathering when they gradute.

i kinda looked at it like, every idiot should be able to pass highschool. making a celebration of it is just rubbing it in the retarded kids faces who didnt graduate. plus the celebrations are fucken fun, and for once you get to make a decision that next coming school year if you gonna go back to uni, work or travel. Not exactly true. Some of the most successful people out there dropped out of high school and never bothered with college.

I personally have met a number of high-school dropouts who are now multi-millionaires.

Dropping out of high school doesn't always reflect no ambition or work ethic. Some people simply don't like it or have other factors come against them in life which force them to drop. Even if they did have no ambition at the time, people make stupid mistakes and can still rise above it.
