JP vs. Julien for park

I'm 6'3'' about 185 lbs. I ski mostly in the park with a little bc--I was going to get the new 185 ARV as my park ski this year, but I found a pair of '05 JP vs. Julien 191 skis for like 400 bones. Are these just a bigger/fatter ARV? I ride in the pipe A LOT - will these big skis still kick ass in the pipe? or do I need to go with the ARV?

The JP's are a sick ski, but they will not be to good in the pipe. As they are a predominantly BC ski, they have less sidecut than many other park skis, which will make it more difficult for you to ride pipe, especially when the walls are pure ice.

I would ride JP vs Juliens everywhere if I had a pair, especially in the park. But like Vicious said, the lack of sidecut wouldn't treat you too well in the pipe.

But Nomensteven, stiff? I don't mean to jump on the bandwagon or anything, but christ, have you ever even held a pair? They're mighty soft.

they are pretty decent for park, and they are farily light (at the the '05-'06 is), but certainly not stiff. they are wider than the ARVS. 126-103-116, compared to ARV at 125-92-115 or 130-95-119, depending on length. if your looking for pipe as well, i wouldnt go near the jp vs julien (although they are a delicious ski)

ya i own a pair and i wouldnt recommend them for anything other then the soft fluffy powwow. they're hella soft and butter like a dream but the length/width/nosidecut really takes away from any performance it would have on anything groomed. but in the pow they're soooooooo sick :)

You're STILL wrong, they're softer than Chronics, softer than Ar5s, softer than PEs, softer than TMs, softer than Scratch FS... No. They're noodles in ANYTHING. Do not consider these pipe skis. They're my everywhere ski but if I'm in pipe I want Ar5s.

Except I'm no good in pipe.

They're actually 188. The length was reported wrong last year. This year they got it right.

on a side note, my ski group happened to run into boyd at alpine this year, and he was rocking the '06 JP's. he said that they had improved the core so that it was even lighter than last year.

not that that really makes much difference, i still wouldn't recommend them as a park/pipe ski.

length surprisingly effects ur park skiing much more then sidecut or width would. like JD has said, the skis are noodles...think pocket rocket noodly or another big soft ski. the flex of the ski if stiff under the foot and for some inches in front and behind the binding mat. so dont be fooled if u just flexed a friends pair or just some in a shop u put bindings on them and they become wayyyyy softer. but they're soo damn fun in the pow, its the jib ski of the powpow.

Dude, there's no way the JP would fit decently on a park. They simply don't turn on hard packed snow, they're heavy as well.
But you will be the new god with them on the pow.

I know what I'm talking about, just rode them last week, I mean, for their size they're not heavy but still a lot heavier than a park ski.

Yeah, there's something to that. I mean overall they actually AREN'T that much heavier but because the weight isn't centralized but rather spread out they do feel a bit heavier in that way, especially with the floppy factor. Still, for their size, it's crazy how little they weigh.

you guys are all bitches. i grew up skiing straight skis until like 3-4 years ago. i could ski a slalom course switch in those mother fuckers. staright skis are kinda fun cause they dont hook up at all. since when do you need to do small radius carves in the park. im not saying the jp vs juliens would be a particularly good ski in the park, but id like to try it. i dont know if the pair i looked at were different then production cause they were TJs, but they had no sidecut and they were way the hell softer then pocket rockets. probably the softest skis i ever did see

they are a powder ski. maybe too wide for the park. but you could try them. lots of people like to ski pow skis in the park

i ski moguls compeditively and i amgrabbin a pair of jps for the pow, they sound so nice for a guy like me who like straight skis. they are also lighter than the ar5s.

haha finally my chance to qoute JD and tell him he is wrong! THe new Jp Julien is a Totally different ski than last year! It's a 188cm this year for starters, it's a different sidecut, a tad stiffer because last year as you so eloquently stated earlier was like cardboard, and the graphic is way sicker. I skied it with Boyd Easley last year and he told me what was up, but he still couldn't eff with my Prophets.

I'm glad you pointed out the graphic is different. Also, the 05/06 JP is the same size as last year. Although the 04/05 was stated as a 191, it really only measured the same as this year's 188.

yeah i have noticed he talks out of his ass and tries to sound smart and like he knows what he is talking about. he thinks the arv is a better park ski that the ar5 and they are the best park ski on the market. basically if the arv had a penis, nomensteven would like to touch it

You seem to be very up on the fact that you rode with Boyd. If he saw you claiming like that and tossing his name about everywhere I doubt he'd be too eager to do so again. Or at least I wouldn't in his place. I won't go so far as to name drop right back at you, but according to another team member they're barely stiffened at all. Which would suggest to me that they're still very noodly. Hell, T-hall is still riding them, which should tell you something. Also, when I made that post I was operating under the assumption given to me by a reliable source, who was obviously misinformed, and by powder magazine, who called the 05/06 the same ski as last year in their september issue's gear guide... apparently they couldn't tell the difference between the two models either. So, in effect, you're partly right, and I was partly wrong when I made that comment (Note: over a month and a half ago before any shops had seen them). They're not a totally different ski, only slightly tweaked. And The length is the same as last year's, but that's already been mentioned. I don't know how many pairs of 04/05s you moved out of your ski and board shop last season but if you look at them it's pretty easy to tell that they're not 190+. Or maybe that's just me.

By the way, just because a ski is a noodle doesn't mean it's a bad ski, obviously. You seem to be taking a denigrating tone toward it for that reason. Keep in mind that the ski isn't really for ripping lines as hucking shit into pow switch. JP is not using stock JPvs.Js in WAR, I can guarantee you that.

Have you seen that segment? It's insane. I have last year's JPs and if he was using them for that stuff they'd be flopping around like nobody's business. At least ONE of his pairs is beefed up for sure. I don't see how it could be otherwise.

In terms of the debate over whether his sticks were stock or not, I have no info to add. However, in a similar situation, I know due to their soft flex, lots of people wonder if Seth skis stock Pistols on the huge lines he skis and the answer is yes.

The thing with seth is he has that huge plate. I don't see how JP's skis COULD be stock, at least when he's skiing lines. It just doesn't make sense. And armada riders have often in the past used skis which were, aside from their topsheet, quite unlike the stock model. I'm not sure if Tyson meant he skis stock all the time or if he uses the stock skis for most day to day stuff. That stall on the rooftop in that well-circulated pic last year was a stock pair, I'm sure.

JD from what I've heard they were stock. They have been stiffened up but I don't know to what extent. JP is not all that big of a guy and to be fair you're like 6'2" 200+ so it's fair to assume you'd put a lot more stress on them.
