I'm learnin stuff about Buddhism and It really makes sense. They don't try to answer questions that we cannot solve. Like Does God exist? or Is there Heaven and Hell? They live with respect to the body and spirit because that is what they know exists. It's really cool.

Honestly I go to a catholic school and I have never met anyone that has pushed thier religion on someone else. I guess it's more of a southern american thing. I'm not a fan of literalists that take the bible word for word because the bible was written to be taken out of context as a group of stories that tell a message.

Well, I think religion was created mainly to control society and create a list of morals so that people would have an example of how to behave. the sad thing s, people take relgiopn to the th extremes. Some try to impress their values upon others, and others will use religion as a false veil as a motive to kill. Anyways, is there really a need to be affliated with religion? If you live your life as a good human being, odds are, that if their is in fact some sort of afterlife, would you not end up there anyways?

I see religion as more of a guide to living a good life. That's why hinduism and Buddhism are good. They respect all other faiths because they see that everyone is really just believing the same God. Except for death and priesthood they don't really have rituals, they are more or less celebrations. They really just focus on being good to your society and good to your self.

I don't know the meaning of life but the key to life is finding something you love, then finding a way to get paid for it.

michigan isnt exactly the south....and there are plenty here. The Richland Bible Church, a nearby congregation seems to be a fanatic cult. They all wear jeebus(simpsons!)shirts and carry bibles around, always qouting it and stuff. its weird that people take a fucking book and live by it.

I don't think you understood, so once again... I'm hindu, what's a Christy?
The article was just a drunken thought, not a religious preach.

ahhhh religion........ it feels good to have an actual meaningful discussion on here, first one in a long time........
I believe that the true, original purpose of religion was to control. When you get someone to BELIEVE that their soul is really the property of someone else (i.e. God), then the people who are in charge of translating God's will on Earth have an insanely large amount of power.
However, some religions have developed as a really good pathways, like Buddhism, or Unitarian Universalism, or several others. The problem with religion, is when it's used to fight a war, start the Crusades or something like that.
The Bible...... is a collection of good stories, and the morals can really help you to lead your life in a good way.
Then again, what is a good way? How do we know how to judge right and wrong? WHAT IS RIGHT AND WRONG? and what right do we have to judge that, or judge anything. All we are is a species in nature, and we exist to continue that species...... when you think about it..... nature really is the only real constant thing that exists and is not an idea from the minds of men.
Wow..... I'm thinking insanely deep now..... I must go formulate my thoughts, and get back to you guys. I'll go read your article rebel.
and just so you guys know..... I'm not really athiest, I think that if we have to worship anything, it should be the natural world, this incredible environment of stars and waterfalls and plants and sunlight and colors and earth and atoms that we are so fortunate to have been placed in........... ahh damn, I've been reading thoreau too much :).

this is all my opinion.. i have no idea really where it came from. probably after spending 19 years taking in all that i've seen around me.
in my opinion we have religion because we have developed into beings that require some sort of direction, and in order to fulfill our need for direction, people need to invest in a type of faith. there are many different types of faith that people can believe in, obviously, and only part of modern faith is religion. people can believe and live for economics, politics, sports, or many other things. this has only become true fairly recently when the western world has accepted the fact that religion has experienced decline in interest. people can now devote their lives to many things other than the search for eternal happiness. think about it like this: with so much of the world experiencing a fall into complete laziness, why wait 60-70 odd years to reach utopia when u could have it now through traditionally 'selfish' means?
does this make sense to anyone?

yeah, I agree with both you guys. We are a race that requires direction and I think something to believe in, some people think this is God, others another God or religion such as Hindu or what have you, or even aerosol cheese, the GuGu or the Jedi. I myself am Christian and believe in God and I think the bible is a good source of direction and stuff, great morals, pretty hefty and boring sometimes but it's all good.
