pros w/out poles

i've read that certain pros out there drop their poles every once in a while and rock it like a snowboarder/bladers, and it makes sense if all you do is hit the pipe and park, in those situations what would you need poles for besides balance? in the future i wouldn't be surprised if we saw pros without poles all the time, with an exception for the big mounatin guys, like myself, i know i need them for what i do. anyways I'm not in the scene as well as some people on here, so what do you guys know about it?

all i know is that you go off big ass jumps, 50, 60ft+ tables, you almost feel like your losing your balance... once you get used to the poles, they own you, really, its amazing just how weird it is skiing without em, and for the pros, i dont know bout that, so...

i dont know, i thought i read eric pollard and younger guys are doing it, i know aerialist skiers dont use poles either... i felt like posting it because i think when you take away poles it looks less cool, i dont know why, it reminds me of rollerblading or something, it just doesn't look right

you wanna know what i think of when i see someone jibbing without poles?
i think of the little 5 year olds i teach one day a week to get a free season pass, i think of them mobbing down the hill in their pizza with their hands on their knees, and then i think of baseball.

Pep and a good lot of the mammoth kids skied without poles a bunch last season. It helps your balence. Kier Dilon went skiing for the first time in his life at the June half pipe, he didn't use poles. Check it in the stereotype credits.

if you're a beginner poles just get in the way cause you dont know how to use them, that's why we dont give the kids poles when the first start skiing.

poles are more of a rhythm and style thing, used to keep your rhythm while carving, give the hands something to do. i understand not using poles as part of a balance exercise, it's just like skiing with your boots unbuckled, but to do it all the time??? and put it in your film segment??? GAY!

NO, not like cross-training at all. cross training is doing a different sport and then the central adaptations 'cross' over. skiing without poles is still skiing

yea, it does indeed help you but i dont know how much, its tricky at first but if you do it for a day you get used to it

isnt it maditory to use poles im comp? cause i saw mosley hit a table in comp with both poles in one hand so im assuming u have to carry them

Skiing without poles may increase balance but it feels so fucking weird! I can't stand it! I tried jumping without poles once last year and well lets just say it wasn't pretty!


Where I live, there are five ski resorts within 10 kilometers of my house. Everybody who lives here, whether they're rich or poor, skis all the time. In the winter, skiing's a way of life. Well if you want to get technical about it...

The modern shaped ski has totaly eliminated the need for ski poles, unless you are racing slolom or somthing, or like making a bunch of quick little turns down the hill or sking some deep pow.

You probably wern't around back in the day when skis were long, and straight, and a pole plant was necessary to properly initiate a turn.

I teach skiing to, so I frequently dont use poles. It feels so goddamned weird... Off jumps, I always use poles, it has to do so much with balance. Doing it without poles would improve your balance awareness i guess, but for me, poles add points to style. Is it really skiing without poles? To me, its kinda cheating if you lose them...

to get better balance try this.
-try skiing on an easy slope on only one ski useing the sole of your foot to steer.
- try it with your boots undone
-try it with your boots undone and with no poles.
go on its fun and you get to look like a dick but its good for your skiing.

the only benefit i see in riding without poles is to get better absorbtion and balance skiing moguls. other than that, i like the fact that i can 'push off' my poles. too many times i've been at a rail, and the only way i could have hit it is via a pull-in by a pair of poles.

When I jump during XC practice (don't tell Ja) I don't use poles you try jumping with 210 skis and 178 cm poles

riding without poles has a few benefits:

1. you can easily smoke a bowl as you cruise down the mountain

2. you can high-five your gay friend who also has no poles as you ski next to eachother

3. you can talk on your cellphone, masterbate AND ski at the same time

4. you can attach your snowblade straps to your ankles much quicker and easier

5. you can really get some good 'gorilla' steez

bonus: you don't have to pay for poles! hooray!

yeah, i was gonna say what skibum did (i think) some guy in stereotype doesn't use poles, i think he had a swedish/finnish sounding name and was skiin on scratches - don't ahv stereotpye myself so can't go look up, look odd, but prob easier to do grabs that are wierd, no poles to get in way of moving hand to diff parts of skiis

-If people don't want 'Posers' in their sport they should quit skiing and take up knitting. I highly doubt that anyone 'Poses' as a knitter. -Jibtech

Dave: I agree with you totally, you in no way need poles to get down the mountain...you can mock pole plant movements with your arms to keep your body forwards no problem...doesn't mean everyone is gonna stop using them tho, it just means that you could lose em one day if you really wanted to - The only reason I see for getting rid of them would be if you got seriously injured or hurt by your poles and didn't want it to ever happen again...or if injury plain forced you too

when i ride park i don't use them....i do when i ride the rest of the mountain....poles look incredibly gay when jibbing 90% of the time, most jackjass are always moving there arms around in teh air and on rails, there poles only accuentuate the flalling...i definetly have respect for the few pros that can make using poles stylish...but bottom line is i don't think they are needed in the park...

well, i think that skiing without poles can help out a bit. when i was first learning how to do grabs, i tried them w out poles, and that helped me alot. i think that skiing with poles sorta seperates skiers from snowboarders tho. i dont have anything against snowboarding, i just think that we need to look a bit diff from them

Ya I broke like 3 poles last year and it sucks nuts to have to ski the rest of the day with 1 pole. Im too well trained, and it just looks better with two.

i was once like all of you - raggin on anyone without poles, until i accually skied with people who didnt use them. in the park there is now real need for poles. without poles you can grab twice as long and twice as good. instead of pushing yourself onto a rail, you use the ski and pop on. i have been skiing half the day today without poles (was filming) and went skiing real terrain, not just the park. i had now problem without poles skiing down a tight run between huge ass boulders. its helps your balance a ton and make you use more body language, not just your hands.

when i was like 9, my friend who was like 30, made me ski couloir exteme on blackcomb without poles cause i was swinging my arms around on the previous run, and holy shit i got so much better cause of stuff with moving my hands

I don't like how it looks when skiers don't have poles. areals look cool, but anything else should have poles. yes, skiing wihtout can be a good learning tool, but skiers should have poles otherwise.
