'If they nuke US, We should nuke their Holy Sites' - [Politics]
Submitted by scienott on 7/21/2005 1:35:42 PM
Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo told a radio show host that the U.S. could "take out" Islamic holy sites if Muslim fundamentalist terrorists attacked the country with nuclear weapons. He made his remarks Friday on WFLA-AM.
Talk show host Pat Campbell asked the Littleton Republican how the country should respond if terrorists struck several U.S. cities with nuclear weapons.
"Well, what if you said something like — if this happens in the United States, and we determine that it is the result of extremist, fundamentalist Muslims, you know, you could take out their holy sites," Tancredo answered.
"You're talking about bombing Mecca," Campbell said.
"Yeah," Tancredo responded.
The congressman later said he was "just throwing out some ideas" and that an "ultimate threat" might have to be met with an "ultimate response."
Spokesman Will Adams said the four-term congressman doesn't support threatening holy Islamic sites but that Tancredo was grappling with the hypothetical situation of an attack deadlier than 9/11. "We have an enemy with no uniform, no state, who looks like you and me and only emerges right before an attack. How do we go after someone like that?"
"What is near and dear to them? They're willing to sacrifice everything in this world for the next one. What is the pressure point that would deter them from their murderous impulses?" he said.
Mohammad Noorzai, coordinator of the Colorado Muslim Council and a native of Afghanistan, said Tancredo's remarks were radical and unrepresentative but that people in Tancredo's position need to watch their words when it comes to sacred religious sites and texts.
Seriously, what is wrong with people.

of course its a sin, but the FUNDEMENTALIST muslims see it as their doing a good deed, which is horrible, i just hate how a lot of you people are saying muslims generally instead of talking about fundementalists. theyre completely different, like for example you saying that "These things may seem strange to us but they are part of their beautiful culture so we must respect them." dont say their culture say fundamentalists instead, because now you sound ignorant

Im happy you stupid canuck :D
Not that its a great tool or anything...or any sorta publicity. But I wish even half of you anti-war going people wouldve just been there on 9/11 in downtown NYC. Seeing all the familes cry, mothers who lost their sons or daughters. Familes destroyed. Kids who have to grow up without their dad like my cousin. See all that, see all the death and destruction. Then tell me we have to use diplomacy to stop terrorism? Not comparing the 2 and what they did, theyre 2 entirely sepperate things. But look what happened when Churchill used Diplomacy on the Nazi's

Significant portion being between 10-15%. These are statistics quoted all over CNN and other major networks. So it doesn't seem like much untill you realize we are talking about 10 million people here.

The last lesson learned in a collegiate level statistics class is that statistics are generally meaningless because they are twisted to say whatever the reporting party wants them to say.

Yes, but this is liberal CNN talking. They said something like ONLY 10-15%, trying to make it small. The fact is that a significant portion of muslims in the middle east, regardless of what the actual number is, support the jihad on the US. What makes it significant? The fact that they have been successful in targeting the US on more than one ocasion and the fact that they are currently sending mass numbers of suicide bombers over to Iraq.

no, they're mad at us for more logical reasons than that. for one, the US supports Isreal, a country that is not viewed kindly among most Arabs. they view Isreal as imperialists who immigrated to the region out of the blue and set up their own country. if you look at the situation in a historical context, that isnt quite true, but try telling that to Palestinian kids who are shot at from tanks for not making "curfew" in west bank.

I understand what you are saying Kevo, but the fact that the number 10% and the word significant are involved are particularly alarming from an interpretive standpoint.
I'll save the boring ass elaboration and put it at this. If that 10% is really true, there is a margin of error both ways. Meaning it could be 16%. That's a hell of a lot of people, in the millions perhaps as the Muslim religion is very large. If that many people want to wage an outright war, as you are referring to Jihad, why don't they just do it? They have a lot of money, as many are deeply involved in the oil trade, they could arm themselves and attack with an overwhelming force that we could not overcome by any means.
Or perhaps that #, is taken out of context, twisted and regurgitated by a news company. CNN may have been talking about how the amount of Muslims supporting Jihad has risen since Bush was re-elected. In that case %10 is a really good number and quite big, they would want it that way.

Alright butterlicious, you got me. Radical muslims weren't behind 9/11. Radical muslims didn't blow up the trains in Madrid or the subways in London. Radical muslims aren't rallying young men (and some young women) to go blow themselves up in the crowded streets of Iraq and Israel in the name of Islam. Radical muslims don't protest in vast numbers all over the middle east and burn American flags while chanting death to the great satan. These must all be the construct of a vast right wing conspiracy. It is George Bush who took down the towers. It is George Bush who pays arab looking people to burn American flags and suicide bomb people all around the world. I really shouldn't believe these images that I see on TV, or even the hole in the ground in New York City.

and im sure that the innocent people of the US occupied contries wish that you could see what bombs droped on children, borthers, sisters fathers, mothers and grandparents does to their lives and families. The pain that they feel every day because of it. The pain which we inflicted on them as a retaliation to the attacks on 9/11. We make innocent people suffer to try and ease our own suffering. Your argument works both ways. These people love their families, and find them just as important in their lives, as we do ours.
So how would you feel if you had lost a brother or a sister or a mother or a son or a daughter or a best friend or a wife to an occupying force who doesnt care?
We make innocent people suffer because we cant find the guilty people. And we will cause innocent people to suffer untill we can find the guilty people. But the mass suffering which we have caused isnt makeing any friends, infact it is only creating more enemies. People with nothing left to lose, No family to love them and a burning hatred for the people who put them into the horrible situation which they find them selves wakeing up to every morning. Please tell me how that is fighting terrorism and not just pouring gas onto the fire.

and yes US peolpe argue over the Canada man fuckin George W. Bush. wants to make the NOrth american shield. and canada said no so he was mad. You need to understand that we are way more in danger next to you than between france and germany. We're no longer in the cold was in russia when US were defending canada that's true. but now canada isn't protected by Us anymore cause there is no longuer large scaled war.

yeah the routes that major governments are taking are defintly making the problem worse, but at the same time i semi-understand why the americans got behind bush. if i felt that my country had been attacked id want revenge too.
but my main reason for posting..the guy who was talking about how we stupid canucks need to stop whining because we have a benevolent neighbour: ever heard of "manifest destiny"? ever try living next to a benevolent neighbour who wants to dump toxic waste into your watersheds, threaten you with economic sanctions if you dont \hand over your natural resources, and has had government focus groups chatting about taking you over for the past few hundred years?
sorry i dont mean to open up another u.s. vs canada debate we have had to many. but i do want to say that certain fundamentalists, who are not prepared to give mercy or who dont hesitate to attack civilain populations..welll...morally....they sort of deserve what they get eh? the problem is you guys cant find em, and the harder you look in the wrong places the more people you hurt, and the more 'fundamentalists' there seem to be.

I see what your saying but still. Its also up to the people of the nation to do something about it too. America cant be the big brother in all disputes. If occupying their lands is what it takes to get their asses in gear to do something about their own corrupt governments than so be it.
It seems to me that most of the Arabic world sits around and gets destroyed by suicide bombers everyday and landmines everywhere and it almost seems that they dont care. They dont try and do anything about it, instead they just say "Give us money and feel bad for us" they have to help out too. America would be home alot faster, but they just seem to not give a shit what we're giving them. They just all kill each other. And Im not saying that all muslims kill each other. I know a few and theyre really cool. But its the "the few assholes ruin it for the rest of us" thing

kevo your being rediculous....buttlerlicious said it was radical muslims bombing and stuff. its not mainstream. theres a difference between radical and mainstream. and those numbers are way off. 10%!!? with 10 million people in the army they could fight the us couldnt they? how many people are in the us army? just curious. i see why palestinians would be mad too. they were there first and some outside force (us) gives the newcomers the land and helps them over the originals. maybe thats why they are so against the US on these "polls"

the thing is is that if thats a poll then its just a voice. its not liek 10 million are willing to take action. id say less than 1 million would take action. think about how many people hate on bush in the us. same as people hating on america in the middle east. people in the US dont do anything or take action. they just speak out or criticize.

To Apple, B-Cat, and the other Canadians-
I really respect your views. I really do. I honestly think the world would be a more perfect place if everyone in the entire world had the same views as you and actually wanted peace. The problem is that every so often, some people come along that need to be stopped. If everyone sat around and didn't do what it takes to stop these people when the periodically craw out of the depths of hell, the evil deeds that they perform would continue to happen. This was the case with Hitler and the empire of Japan, it is the same case with fundamentalist islam. There were a ton of German and Japanese civilians that were killed as a result of the war that insued to stop the bad people. It was an absolute terrible thing, but in the end it is what had to be done.(PLEASE don't start a debate over the atomic bomb- a ton of civilians would have died in a land invasion too) One can argue that if that is the case, then why doesn't the U.S. step in when things go bad in Africa or South America or wherever. The reason for this is that one of Americas major faults throughout history is that we wait for something to smack us in the face before we do something about it. It was this way in world war one and two, and it just so happens that it took something major like 9/11 for us to get involved in a full fledged war on terror. It does help that we have a vested interest in the area that this particular problem is steming from. Saying that war is bad is very true. Wanting to fight a war is down right disgusting. It is normally right to say that you will not fight for this or that, but what are you if there is nothing that you would fight for? (Also, for the record I will agree that the WMD reason for going into Iraq was a bunch of crap. Bush should have said that there was a meglomaniac who has a history of using WMD's who should be removed from power to help create a democratic flagship for a better middle east)

I finally had a chance to read this post.
First of all I never said anything using the words stupid or whining. Don't misquote and turn this into an unintelligent discussion.
Also, manifest destiny....I do remember learning about it but brush me up a bit. How did we do anything harmful to Canada during manifest destiny?
As for toxic waste into your watersheds...my knowledge is that we are going to be storing the majority of our toxic waste 100 miles from my house in Yucca Mt. And while there is the possibility of contamination of the water, no one has ever suggested dumping toxic waste directly into watersheds.
I'm not going to acknowledge your propaganda and false statements about us taking over. It has never been truly considered by our government in public. What people do behind closed doors is their business.
My major problem with Canadians who spew shit about the U.S. is that you are so quick to judge us all by two bad terms of presidency....to the point that your countrymen are now coming on this board and saying "we're getting what we deserve" as pag said. DO NOT have the gumption to turn your back on all the good things that this Union has done for YOUR way of life, which are too numerous for me to name while you sit back and count on one hand the errors of a few of our leaders. People are fallable, our president has made mistakes, we are suffering for them. We do not need people like you and pag rubbing in the hurt that EVERY American and citizen of the world suffered from 9/11 by telling us we are getting what we deserve.

actually, what they do behind closed doors should be your buisness because they are supposed to represent your opinions and views.
But what i wanna ask is what some of those benifits which are "too numerous to name" are. just a short list. you dont have to name them all. just 4 or 5.

What they do behind closed doors what a bad phrase.
Unless it is a consideration that they decide to take public, matters that politicians may joke about over cigars are not the representation of our opinions and views.
As far as the rest of your reply...I'll wrap it up in a sentence. Canadians enjoy every aspect of the western civilization way of life that did not exist until America delcared independence and started setting the pace.
And then I'll flip the coin...what has Canada done for us that gives you the leeway to imply that we "got what we deserve" and the other nonsense and criticisms some of your countrymen choose to spew.

theres a more simple solution than us being in iraq and being killed, like is said we should be focusing money to find bin laden and other top people.. and kevo you really gotta learn how to interpret things better, when did i ever say that fundamentalists never did all that shit, i was saying that its the fundamentalists doing it, and not to blame innocent mainstream muslims

now the phrase 'manifest destiny' is a rather interesting one. who's actually read about the end of the cold war? the conflict that precipitated the fall of the soviet union was their failed invasion of afghanistan. the ussr overstreched their resources and attempted to annex the afghanis and pretty much lost the cold war because of it (and because of that gorbachev fuck). it was a huge expense on finance and moral to wage a losing war.
now how is it that a rag tag army of towel headed sand niggers defeated a superpower? because of the help of the usa. america did extensive training of the afghanis and taught them full guerilla tactics and intelligence protocols. they trained the very men the are now fighting.
furthermore, saddam hussein began his rise to power as a pawn of the united states. he was a strategic ally of the united states during the cold war and the usa willingly turned a blind eye to his genocides, arsenal amassment, and chemical weapon use so long as saddam denounced the ussr and iran. it's been a while since i've read about this relationship and my memory has gone a little vague, but saddam was kept in power by george sr and rumsfeld was the usa's ambassador to him.
manifest destiny eh? interesting how these things are biting the us in the ass now.
one of the big things that really got those damn terrorists angered was when saudi arabia allowed us soldiers to occupy their holy lands during the gulf war. that was tantamount to sacriliege. if you'll note, saudi arabia did not allow us forces on their lands recently.
saudi arabia. interesting country. some rather questionable relationships involved there between the ruling family, the bin ladens, and the usa. i recommend you read 'house of bush, house of saud'. it shines some rather interesting light.
i actually had much more to say, but this stupid refresh bullshit thing cut a third of my response and i'm not typing it again.
in conclusion, bite me

i didn't mention canada at all, i didn't mention how canada related to america. i spoke about saudi arabia, afghanistan, the ussr, the cold war, iraq, and the usa. where was the canada? i never mentioned how manifest destiny related to canada/america, i said how american actions in the mideast and eurasia during the 70s-90s have manifested its current destiny.
thank you deezel for being so stupidly anti-canadian. if you would remove your head from your ass, you would realise that i did not even comment on us-canada relationships. i was merely taking an objective third party point of view and used historical evidence to demonstrate the foolishness of the administrations decisions.
why do you always have to drag canada into it? it shouldn't matter if i'm from canada, spain, france, south africa, iran, or portugal. it's a outside perspective.
what i see is superiority complex. you think canada is inferior to the usa and are outraged when i impugn on the righteousness of the decisions of your sovereign nation. 'how dare those canucks pipsqueaks ridicule our war efforts? don't those stupid beavers realise they should be sucking our dicks for giving them democracy and freedom?'
rather then try to pawn off 'freedom fries' or 'freedom syrup' or some other bullshit, why don't you examine the FACTS and try to understand HOW america got into the situation it is in.
i just stated facts about past usa actions. you should note that i didn't even give an opinion. the truthful factsof history make the usa look bad. don't 'blame canada' for pointing out such ugly truths, blame history and your past presidents.
thank you deezel for reinforcing my belief about certain americans being assholes as though they thought they were the will of god (not saying you think you are, but bush sure does, self-righteous prick).
in conclusion, pull your head out of your ass and try to read the words, not your own prejudices and stereotypes. dipshit.

Hucksplat...you need to relax a bit.
First off, you are the one who needs to read the thread. Another Canadian used Manifest Destiny as the reason why Canadians are coming on this thread and talking shit about "how we deserve it".
I asked because, "Manifest Destiny" was a foreign policy, I believe (but am not sure) during one of the Roosevelt terms. I asked (B-Cat?) to explain how manifest destiny effected the Canadian/U.S. relationship in such a way that many Canadians apparently despise us even though there are MANY Americans who don't want our political decisions to be the way they are. I am included when it comes to a lot of that.
I'm sorry if I confused your post as a retort to my earlier question but do you see how it could be confused?
As for you considering me to be a reinforcement of Americans being assholes, I once again ask YOU to be the one to read the whole post. I have largely moderated and stayed neutral in this thread. Until some Canadians got on here and started attacking ALL Americans for the decisions of so FEW.
I completely disagree with you saying I have a superiority complex. How is it any more fair for Canadians to generalize all Americans than it is for Americans to generalize all Muslims? IT'S NOT!
That is why I am so heated. It was said now a couple times that Americans and America are getting what's coming to them with terrorist attacks. Is that ok with you? To live in a world where someone you didn't want in office makes a decision you don't agree with so your family dies for it? Do you see why I'm upset now?
I know quite well how America got into the situation, much of it was before I was born. What I am enraged about is people making statements implicating my responsibility for these events. Fair enough?
I didn't drag Canada into it either. Canadians came into this thread and made inflammatory remarks.

not, it's not ok. quite frankly, it must be pretty shitty. but those are the breaks. the public elected those officials and now they have to live with the consquences of those decisions. is that fair to those unable to participate in the election because they weren't even born? not really.
think you're angry? the brits must be pretty pissed at tony blair right now. how about the brazilians for the execution style 'prevention' of the mendenez kid?
"I know quite well how America got into the situation, much of it was before I was born. What I am enraged about is people making statements implicating my responsibility for these events. Fair enough?"
i'm not saying you're responsible for the situation, i never did. but the american nation as a whole IS responsible for its current condition. that is what i'm trying to get you to accept. though only a select few make those crucial decisions, the indiscriminate whole make the crucial decision of who those select few will be.
you know how america got into it's current situation you say. very well. do you feel that america should bear a portion (not all, not most, but some amount) of the responsibility for todays desperate situation?

I agree that the U.S. has to take responsibility for some of its actions. The actions of the past that have put us in the current situation do not leave the United States without blame.
Like I said, when I read your previous post, I thought you were referring to the AM/CAN banter going on. When read in that context, it appeared as though you were just reinforcing the serves you right attitude.
I want to clarify myself a little more...I know that the public has to live with the actions of the elected. I am upset because it's hard enough to live in this climate, we don't need heartless idiots telling us "serves you right", when a lot of us did what we could.
The rubbing of salt in the wound is what is making me mad. I'm happy I live in the U.S., it is a beautiful country of varied natural landscape with too many options as to how I may enjoy the hours of my life. This does not mean that I'm pleased with our politics or that I should have hate thrown at me without consideration. I don't stereotype all others, I should be allowed to expect the same treatment and have a right to be angry when I don't get it.

"the american nation as a whole IS responsible for its current condition. that is what i'm trying to get you to accept. though only a select few make those crucial decisions, the indiscriminate whole make the crucial decision of who those select few will be."
Thats human nature, you cant escape it. Its the classic "our son got straight A's on his report card" vs. "Your son got suspended for bullying a cripple" we want to be apart of things that are good and we want to distance ourselves from things we dont like. you wont be able to change that in anyone.
Deezl... to continue, what have we done for the US? to my knowalge of history and forign affairs (which isnt that good), not a whole lot, you dont oftan ask for our help. However we do contribute heavily to things like the space program (They dont call it the Canada arm for nothing...). We recently gave you 148 million with another 68 million set aside to help develop a new fighter jet for your military, that we would have to buy from you if we wanted. On the morning of 9/11 we took all the planes which were heading to the north easter states and out of the kindness of our hearts (spicificly those in gander, newfoundland) took stranded passangers into their homes, fed them and gave them all the comforts you could ever want from a 4 star bed and breakfast. Now, I dont know alot about canada us relations, but i was able to make a short list of two or 3 things that we have done for you. I would appreciate it if you could answer my question and make me a short list of 3 or 4 things that you have helped us with.

I say we bomb the fuckers, I have friends that had family members in that building. I don't know how many of you like to see full grown guys cry like babies cuz their sisters are dead? They fucked with the US we are the most powerful nation in the world. We make the right choices. If we nuke them so be it, they fuckin deserve it, if they don't get nuked then they are just lucky they didn't/

Apple,
Since it isn't clear enough I'll indulge you. I said there are numerous reasons and they are quite simple to sum up.
Canada survives as a nation because of the U.S. Here are two that encompass most every aspect of life. We support you Militarily, and Economically.
I believe it was Truman who pledged a U.S. military policy to ALWAYS defend Canada and back them in conflict. While we provide this support, Canada has backed out on us numerous times. Even in the Cuban missile crisis where Canadian lives were threatened as well.
Here's a couple quick stats for you on the economic front...
87% of Canadian exports go to the United States
1/3 of all goods manufactured in Canada are exported to the U.S.
We give about 4billion a month more in trade than we get back from Canada.
A couple other things off the top of my head that I don't know numbers for...
Canada is technologically advanced as a direct result of neighboring the United States.
Canadian citizens enjoy American advancements in medicine, often times faster than we do as a result of our horrible litigation system.
I'm done with the Canada U.S. debate. Why don't those of you who have insensitive remarks about us having to live with terrorism just keep your mouths shut.
No one here who knows anything (and trust me that's the majority of us) believes that our politics aren't being used as the reason for terror attacks. This doesn't make terror attacks acceptable.
^Do you feel that our politics make terror attacks acceptable? Why is an eye for an eye ok when you are a terrorist but not when you are an American? I don't support bombing cities, but I can see how some people want to take their pound of flesh. No one is right.
