Ummm, I fly alot with my skis and I use a bag. Tubes are good in theory, and if you've ever watched the baggage guys load your stuff, dont, it'll make you cry!! But once you get to where you're going they're cumbersome and take up space. Also they're not very versatile because its a fixed volume.
Example: If I'm travelling with 1 pair of skis I always still use my double bag because I can pad it out with all my ski clothing, socks, tshirts, shoes, shovel, etc etc. You'll be amazed at how much you can fit in. It means that in the end you dont have much to pack in your bag, and so you can minimise the amount of luggage you have to cart around. And, when you get where your going, you can fold it up and put it away.
Tubes are heavy and pretty expensive. If you want a compromise, a few companies do soft bags with a semi-rigid bottom and wheels, they're bombproof and easy to move around. Dakine and Salomon do them that I know of.
Hope this all helps a bit.
