The Truth behind the PS3 and the Xbox 360

Q:Why do people care what hardware is in a console when all that matters is what games they will have?
A: The reason is becasue the console manufacturers make sure to wow the audience in order to get early adopters. the only people who should really care are the game developerssince they must work with these limits

Ok well its been a couple of months since we were all wowed by the new consoles at E3. unfortunatly just like for the unveilling of the PS2, The Xbox, The gamecube, The Dreamcast, and the Nintendo 64, Hype was there also. now that game studios have had access to Dev kits and know what the consoles will be capable of we know:


Price:
Game Consoles are afer all made to be affordable and Microsoft learned that the hard way by losing alot of money on each consoles. this time around they smartened up and put their money where it counts CPU, Graphics, and storage while keeping the cost on other components down by using massproduced things such as dual layered DVD disk drive similar to the ones you can buy at your computer store. Sony has gone another very risky way they are adopting alot of very expensive hardware such as Blueray which blueray drives are not produced yet (and Blueray disk players will be around $300 when they come out) and alot of peripherals such as Multiple Ehternet cards Bluetooth, and Wifi. The SONY PS3 will cost around $500 and they will either have to make it very expensive at the start or absorb the cost and hope that components cost less to manufature.

Balance: Now obviouly all computers(and consoles using computer technology) must be balanced by balanced I mean you can not match an overly powerful CPU with an underpowered GPU since it causes bottlenecks and you lose the performance of the more expensive components. both the PS3 and XboX 360 will be balanced in that sence.

CPU: here are the facts. the CPU will NOT be 20-35 times faster than current CPU's they will be closer to 2-5 times current CPUs performance. Sorry the consoled will not be destroying the PC market this generation

GPU: The GPUs are very powerful htey are similar to the recently released 7800 which the PS3 actually has the N70 that is in this card and the Xenon also is similar. So having better graphics is out of the question since a year from now these consoles will have a graphics card that is available today to PC gamers.

HD support:
The PS3 has very unrealistic expectations, running games in 1080p is unrealistic much less 2. most games will be in 720p or 1080i with AA. the lack of 1080p is ok since the first TV that came out with this resolution available only came out this year. to acheive the higher 1080p resolution the game will not be able to have complex shaders.


In short: The Hype at E3 was just that, hype, and you can expect the best games on the next gen consoles to look like Current Half Life 2 on the computer. but dont worry about the stats. all that matters are the games.
