RICHMOND, Vt. -- Rescue crews will continue to search Wednesday for the body of a 19-year-old University of Vermont student who is presumed dead afer slipping into the Huntington Gorge in Richmond Tuesday.
Ivy Marcella, of Edgartown, Mass., was swimming in the pools above several waterfalls when she lost her footing and was swept downstream by the strong current.
She did not resurface.
Richmond police say a search for her body will continue throughout the week. But authorities are reluctant to endanger themselves in the swift water.
About 20 people, including a Vermont State Police diver, have died at the gorge since 1961.
I knew Ivy, she's a freshmen at UVM who i used to chill with down in martha's vineyard. I jump Huntington Gorge all the time... and even though the names of everyone who has died there is posted right where you park i never considered an actual risk of drowning. I don't think I'll be swimming in the gorge anytime soon... RIP Ivy
