I don't consider "death grunts" or "gutterals" to be vocals at all. I find them to be DISGUSTING!!! Even if they have talent doing them, I think it sounds like some kid burping, or worse.

From your sweeping generalizations about metal, it doesn't seem like you've even know enough about the genre to be making a comparison. Your description of metal music and metal listeners isn't accurate or comprehensive and you're just furthering the misperceptions that most people have of the genre.

First post on NS, hello everyone

Hardcore is a direct descendent of Metal, the screaming vocals came from the band Death in the mid 80's and the original hardcore bands that combined the styles of metal, (Sepultura, Crowbar, Prong, CoC) can trace the routes of their style to that band. All of the hardcore now comes from that school of music, even if most of them don't like it. Thats where the name "Death Metal" came from, because they used growly and screamy vocals which are really the same thing but growls use more of the resonance of one's voice.

So yeah, I guess you could say you don't like metal and the hardocre is better, but Hardcore is just a watered down version of metal that is far less technical and far less creative (opinion here) that owes its heritage from Metal and Punk, both groups happily disown Hardcore as a bastard child with down syndrome.

So why is a band like As I Lay Dying considered hardcore, or post hardcore, or post-primal-prepunctual-prepubescent-post-ubiquitous-concurrently-self-justificational diluted-excessivebrakedownial bore-core, or whatever the fuck you want to call a genre that has no reason to be separated from the rest of hardcore, goth, emo and pop music? Whats different about this band than Metal?

Well, The style is very similar to metal, double bassing, pinched harmonics, metal style screaming, and fast melodic riffs. Its more metal than not, however, the themes of their music is really the thing that separates them, which boils down to lyrics and overall message.

Lets compare lyrics, shall we...

So as you can see, the As I Lay Dying lyrics are whining about a girl who left him. Wow, original every so exciting. The Black Dahlia Murder song is a song ABOUT ZOMBIES COMING BACK TO LIFE. One band is funny, the other isn't. One band has fun and plays extremely technical riffs and has a good time singing funny songs about ZOMBIES. As I Lay Dying writes incredibly morose, trite lines about losing a girl. There's the difference folks, one is tongue in cheek, the other tear in eye, thumb in mouth, sucking on it. Any band who takes themselves as seriously as most Hardcore bands is boring and unoriginal because they spend all their time trying to convey some stupid sad message to appeal to 14 year olds instead of developing musically. Don't get me wrong, theres a lot of terrible metal bands out there that take themselves too seriously, and they're getting popular and getting spots right next to all the terrible hardcore bands on headbangers ball. Doesn't mean any of that is good though.

so um, im pretty sure hradcore is just annoying. they name there songs stupid shit, have seizures on stage, and its not hard to play. and i got the "not hard to play" part partly from my friend who was in a hardcore band, and partly from listening myself. listen to what you want, but im pretty sure bands like Usurper and Black Dahlia Murder, who as stated above, sing about zombies, time travel, werewolves and other such topics.

o yeah-if you wanna hear a crazy scream, listen to "Slaughterstorm" by Usurper. at the end its 33 seconds of a scream that sounds as if no one but the devil himself could produce such a noise

Straight hardcore's gay coz it sounds the fuckin same as it did in the eighties, and to make musical progress a few bands had to label themselves 'post-hardcore' (I respect post-hardcore and love it) coz they couldn't be innovative and creative within the musical boundaries of hardcore, however...

Has anyone ever heard of 'post-metal'? I think not, metal has various subgenres like death metal, black metal, grindcore etc. coz it has the capability to evolve and change since the only defining characteristic of 'metal' is a sense of musicality and technical superiority over any other form of rock (arguably)

but those megadeath lyrics-to me anyway-seem to be about the end of the world and him standing before God(or the gods) on that day, while they are deciding whether he should go to heaven or hell.

hell=assumed home of satan, so those lyrics indirectly refer to satan.

Yeah but the stereotype was neither apt or funny, and its pretty easy to get it right.

I was merely speaking of the vocal style. This isn't really uncommon, how many bands before Judas Priest and Rainbow had vocals like them? Not really any that I can think of, the first bands to growl and scream all out like Hardcore and Metal do now were grindcore and death metal bands from the mid and early 80s, Venom, Death, Napalm Death, Deicide, if you know any bands that did that style before these guys, I'll be all ears. Who played guitar like Chuck Berry before him, who played the guitar like Jimi Hendrix, and then Randy Rhoads? There is a reason that those guys are legends. Soloing guitar came from Charlie Parker in the 1940's, unheard of at the time. So yes, you can tie certain style back to a single person, because there is a first time for everything.

As for being not as good if less creative, yeah you're right, if the music is good then it doesn't matter that much. The lack of technicality and creativity is definitely a deterrent for those who don't already like the genre. Most metal out there, not the shit you might hear on the radio, is quite technical and creatively so, and tends to earn more respect amongst listeners who don't already like Metal.

Yeah, Megadeth lyrics can sometimes be mournful like a lot of metal, but they rarely use tired old cliches like As I Lay Dying about sorrow and losing a chick.

Also, the song Elysian Fields is a story taken from Homer about a field of perfect happiness for those who Zeus preferred. He may have applied it a little to is own life, but it is really a story about reaching this place. And for god sakes, its not about losing a woman, whenever I hear a heavy song about losing a girl, first of all, its never good because its trying to be sad and pitiful and its fucking played out. Doesn't mean losing a girl is no small matter, but it has no place in heavy music IMO.

I guess the thing about hardcore is that it is pretentiously sorrowful, making the assumption that his feelings are somehow worth knowing about and people should respect it. A story about someone doing that that is a a well written, complete story and not just whining is another thing, if you know any hardcore bands that do this please let me know. Its a matter of tastefulness.

Yeah maybe TBDM doesn't take their lyrics that seriously, but taking yourself that seriously like AILD is stupid IMO and its cliche.

An artist can take his music seriously, but Adolescent angst is again, trite and so overdone that they aren't saying anything new and it brings the music down to a simple emotional level. Some metal bands take their lyrics very seriously, but they tend to tell stories and vary the subject matter between songs, hardcore doesn't seem to do that. This isn't true of all metal, but its the whole package, and metalheads do love the heaviness, but without a pursuit of technicality and creativity, its boring to myself and the other metal heads in this forum.

THE BASIC TRUTH OF MUSIC:
All genre's have their chessiness, the fans of which have learned to find humor in or embrace it.

Music cannot be judged on technicality and creativity alone. You have to define your taste for yourself. Technicality and Creativity (although harder) can be somewhat measured, but if you don't like it thats the way it is.

Hardcore definitely appears to me to be less technical and more derivative than good metal, perhaps I haven't heard the right bands, but I've heard a lot of them and so far none of them have impressed me in any way. Its hard to have respect for a Genre when the bands themselves go out of their way to dress a certain way and wear hairspray and makeup and the crowds that the pull are kids that do the same thing and don't know anything about the scene. I personally do not like metalheads and the crowds that go to metal shows, but at least they don't go out of their way to look like idiots who all dress the same and wear make up. In fact, they don't really go out of their way to do anything, thats why they smell bad and don't cut their hair. :)
