Now, I normally wouldn't comment on something like this, because I think we all know it's going to suck. But in this case I can't resist. Do these people have NO IDEA WHAT A ZOMBIE MOVIE IS? There is a basic premise for a zombie film, zombies vs. humans. The big difference is that Zombies cannot think, and are singlemindedly bent on destroying people. Their most important characteristic from a moral perspective is that they cannot cooperate, and therefore, cannot betray each other. Human bengs are the opposite. They can do both. That distinction, right there, is the point. Think of every classic zombie film... what is the major problem? What threatens the survival venture? Not the zombies. It's betrayal by a human element. If we cooperate, we survive, if we can't, we die. THIS IS THE POINT OF ZOMBIE MOVIES. IF ZOMBIES CAN COOPERATE IT RUINS THE DICHOTOMY. In sum, George Romero and whoever else is responsible are idiots.

I'm pronouncing a boycott on this movie.

wait isn't land of the dead about zombies just trying to attack and destroy mankind? Just the people are trying to defend it. Isn't that exactly what a zombie movie is supposed to be?

There is a moral theme about the human condition that underlies every real zombie movie, and letting the zombies cooperate ruins it completely. It's basically the entire point of the films. Enjoy your superficial trash of a film; it seems that modern Hollywood has elected to ruin this genre as they have just about every other one... but this is still not a zombie movie.

on a side note... Im not a huge fan of zombie movies but i really liked dawn of the dead, the one that came out like just a year or so ago.

The original is a classic, the remake version Dawn of the dead was going really well until they leave the mall. The problems were that the survival venture was threatened more by the incompetence of the guy with the chainsaw than any concious betrayal... the human factor threatening the rest of the group was still there but the moral backing wasn't. In fact, they sort of threw you a curve, what with the mall security guard going from obvious prick who you assume will screw everything up, to important member of the team. It was more of a redemption story involving zombies than a "zombie movie" per se. There were a few other iffy bits... Like the zombie with no legs grappling around on the overhanging pipes in the parking lot. That was kind of stupid, it would have taken too much "thought".

I liked how it was actually really funny at parts. You'd be all scared and panicked cuz the zombies were chasing them, then they'd find a semi safe place and crack a few jokes and u almost forget about the nasty situation theyre in and then as soon as u start to get comfortable, bam, the zombies are back. The only part i really hated was when they had the zombie baby, that was just stupid.

I thought the zombie baby had potential, it was a plausible and original, though obvious, way to introduce an element of human action bringing down the survival venture, which, as I already said, is the entire point. However, it kind of fell through.

Obviously you don't know what a Zombie movie is man, look Romero invented this type of movie. He knows what he is doing man, you obviously have not watched anything before 28 days later.

You can appeal to authority all you want, but the fact remains: if zombies can cooperate in this film, Romero has completely ruined the Zombie-Human dynamic. It's like having The Godfather without the notion of family loyalty, or Spider Man without the burden of responsibility. Stop your worship of the man and look at what he's doing with this movie, because on a thematic level, it quite simply does not work.

I thought Dawn of the Dead, which I guess cannot be considered as a zombie movie, was the best movie of 2004. It was sooooooo hilarious.

Exacty. George A Romero is a genius. Night, Dawn, and Day all awesome movies. Land of the Dead as I have seen so far (trailer) seems to have a new horror look to it, like the new Dawn of the Dead. Although I can't say I am interested by this way of portraying horror, I am still excited to see how the movie will turn out.

J.D. i think you have the whole dynamic wrong. I don't think it is about human cooperation, and how zombies represent chaos. I think, well i am sure it is about humans forced to going back into the most primal instincts, and how we have forgotten our roots in survival. Zombie films turn on those little switchs in our head that we have lost though humanity becoming civilised. It is about survival, the most primal rules or life.

I think the concept is awsome, just like a wolf pack in the wild, the zombies become organized so that they can meet their mutual goals.

Even if you look at it that way, and there's something to that (but it fits into the larger picture), the idea of the primitive, who only strives to satisfy his primal instincts, should NOT be cooperating, simply because the zombies HAVE no collective goals, only that individual goal of instinct satisfaction. They think "Kill Kill Kill", not "How best can I achieve my ultimate Killing ends?" That's the essence of primal instinct, there's no rational debate about whether it would help to cooperate. Having them do so misses the entire point of juxtaposing the rationall human being with the devolved, primitive savage zombie.

I still say this idea is incredibly stupid.

allright JD, I have no idea baout zombie movies or anything and you could very well be right. But I think we shoudl wait for the movie to come out and then see what we think. Its kind of irrelevant to say this idea wont work, when you havnt seen whathe does with it.

i agree with JD in the sence that zombies are not supposed to function on rational though...they see humans they want to kill humans...simple as that. even to the extent that they should not know how to open doors and logically move objects to get to humans, they should only be able to attempt to force their way through barriers.
While the Land of the dead does give zombies more brain capacity and cooperativeness then they are meant to have....from a horror entertainment aspect the movie looks pretty good. I'll go see it either way

yea i also really liked that. and to the pereson that made the thread your pretty much suggesting that they remake dawn of the dead fo like the third time. and one of the oldest zombie movies ive seen (dead/alive) the zombies would interact with each other.

Wow once agian JD trys to make him self sound smart and its comes out like shit. THE UNDEAD IS NOT REAL, and it is A MOVIE. Who cares if they can think above what they have in other MOVIES. Go back and look at some earily movies like Last Man on Earth where the undead had thought to some what talk and work togeather. It was a great movie, and becuse they had some thought left over form there prevoius life made it good. The plot on how it happened was also good, so what it comes down to is that JD is a pig fucker.

I didnt feal like writing a long essay on what made it a good movie, i dont care enugh to do that. What JD was saying that with knowing one aspect of the movie he is baseing that he wont like it. Giving a shortsided look at the movie, and you would think if some one was smart they would know NOT to judge things like that.

You mean... don't judge a movie by the point of the movie? I dunno. I don't really care, zombie movies are stupid anyway, but it's kind of pathetic that the only real moral they had is getting tossed out, I guess because they figure "no one who watches these things is smart enough to bother looking for a 'point'". But pretty much all movies that come out suck now. So whatever.

what it comes down to is JD is right. It doesn't matter if he is the creator of Zombie movies, he has lost the focus of what a "true classic" zombie movie is supposed to be. Maybe hollywood got to him. I agree completely that without the right balance and without that moral delimma you just have a horror movie with a bunch of special effects made for hollywood teenyboppers to give them a little spook, not a true Zombie movie.

and 28 days later was a fucking sick movie.
why you ask? because it has many side meanings and the movie can be portrayed in many different ways regarding the society we live in today, and it was well done in the classic "zombie movie sence".

^ thats the thing, why should he do the same thing? I dont want to see the same movie over agian i want to see some thing diffrent. Why make a movie is that has the same characters as allmost all other movies like it. Tradition is nice, but it can be stale and im not going to go see a movie that is like other movies.

Same thing with ski movies, im not going to buy a movie if it looks like other movies.

^ agreed, this is way i enjoyed 28 days so much. I haven't seen "Land of the Dead" yet, so i can't commment on it specifically, but i do agree with JD in that there needs to be a strong moral delimma and a creative substance behind the movie to make it a good zombie movie. At least that's what i look for in a zombie movie. Other than some badass freaky scenes.

usually i would read the entire thread first, but ill do that after. ive seen a good few zombie movies, and 28 days later is by far the best in my mind. i saw land of the dead, and i must say, it was shitty, i mean it was just a terrible movie. romero may have made some good movies to some, but damn he shouldnt have tried again, it's really aweful. the zombies are just lame, the over use of the word "fuck" got annoying, the bad acting was just that, the chemistry (i guess?) was non existant, and the whole idea of zombies thinking could have been so much better. that latter line speaking about how they just want to find a place was just nauseating. it was just stupid really
