Apple Powerbook

I was looking to get one for college. 15in w/superdrive. What are the pros/cons of it vs. a normal PC laptop.

better video editing is all i know... you gotta like mac's to get one, i wouldnt just "buy one" if you hahvent ever used one

i've used mac's all the time in my graphic arts class, i was just wondering the pros/cons when compared to a pc because I'm not a computer person.

much smaller software selection, pretty much no games.

OSX is pretty damned slick though, and comes with a lot of the components that you'd normally have to purchase/pirate for XP.

Really it comes down to what you are going to use it for. If it's going to be nothing but video editing than a powerbook is probably the way to go. If you're looking for something a little more compatible and want the much larger software library, go with a PC.

Actually, most of the programs that people normally use on a PC are also for Mac. And there are a lot of games coming out now too, check out www.apple.com/games or www.insidemacgames.com. If you can, I would wait for the PBs with the Intel processor in 2006 or 2007. IBM has not been able to make a G5 chip for the PB, and with the G4 in it you dont get that much value for your money as you used to. But I guess if you need it now, so theres not much to do with that. You could get an iBook, new models should come out soon, or get a used PB for now. I would def. buy an Apple though, PCs are no good in my opinion. OSX 10.4 Tiger is just lightyears ahead of XP. http://www.macrumors.com/buyersguide/

what i really interested me was the bluetooth ethernet. my dorm offers an ethernet connection as does the libray and surrounding coffee shops. does anyone have any info on this?

well bluetooth and wifi are different things.

Any new laptop you buy nowadays will come with wifi. no worries about that.

Yes, both the Powerbook and the iBook have built-in WIFI. Bluetooth comes standard with the PB, while it is optional on the iBook. Bluetooth doesnt have anything to do with wireless internet though, its for transfering stuff from PDAs, cellphones, and other stuff to your computer.

personally i love macs, i love the feel look and well every thing, the only thing is that, the computer world is pretty much a pc monoply and there are far more things you can due with pc's due to all the compatibility issues. but! if i were u and if you can, wait a year, apple are converting to using intel processors, there for it will be exactly the same architecture as a pc except with a different, also im guessing that you will have the choice of running windows on an apple or windows and apple on a mac.

i got the 12" powerboog G4 for school next year and i love it already. i have always used macs and this is such a nice compy. compared to the pieces of shit my friends use its fucking amazing. notto mention tiny and cool and pretty.
aka i know nothing about technology but it does everything i do (internet, music, DVD, video editing, writing, and thats about it...) and i love it.

it will come with an airport card so you can get on the internet it would be a good investment.

they will be releasing the g5 powerbook soon, worth waiting for because they wont be too much more than the g4's. if you want a killer laptop though. toshiba qosmio, new ones, F or G series. compaq also do an awesome spec one. 2450 ir something.

No, there will never be a G5 Powerbook. One of the main reasons Apple moved to Intel is because the G5 chip from IBM generates too much heat to be put into a laptop. There is probably going to be an update in about 80-100 days or so, but it is going to be a faster G4 chip, and probably some other improvements. The first intel PB should be out in 2006 sometimes.
