Replying to Formatting my hard drive

so... my computer is pretty much toasted at this point because of having way to much stuff on it. so, i am looking to reformat it and just reinstall windows and everything, so it is wiped clean.

to do this wouldnt i just go to my computer, and click format on the drive, then just wait for it to finish and put in the windows cd i got with the computer for it to boot up?

i would think this is right, but i dont want to mess my computer up more than it already is, so if anyone out there has done this before, some pointers would definately be appreciated.
