2005/2006 NS Update discussion

Hey guys,

Newschoolers will once again be updated over the summer. We will be fixing the video and picture sections, cults, reviews and articles.

Among the changes are:

  • Next & Back buttons for pictures

  • Videos will load in the NS window (you can still download them)

  • Cults will have better member management features. We also want to host some cult related games over the winter.

  • Reviews and articles will have better rating systems so the best member content will get better exposure.



I also wish to do some changes to the forums. Among those are:

    Fix quoting by letting you select a section to quote.
  • Fix My Threads to load threads that have been moved.



Does anybody have any comments they would like to make about changes to any of these sections?

i dont know about that karma system, but thats just because i have no way to contribute photo or video that easily. so it would make me look like a serious post whore. i think some people would just post a ton of pointless vids to get their karma up too.

a true karma system wouldn't run solely on that. I think what Paul was getting at was to mix a way of measuring contributions with a way of measuring respect.

so it wouldnt really be that red wad bad it would just show how you contributed. most of my posts arent meaningless accept for that one day (i think you guys know which thread i mean), but other than that i think my posts are intelligent. but i dont run the site so i cant really have a say.

this thread has kind of gotten out of hand so I'll start another discussion regarding a carma system. That is still a ways away (if at all) so for now I'd like to focus on improving current features.

i think it owuld be nice to see the layout of the site change or maybe just the colour just somthin new for a change i think it would be cool to see the many different visual effects of newschoolers but if not its no biggie the col blue is deffinately easy on the eyes

Well we will definetly be making the site wider. Nobody uses 800x600 anymore, 90% use 1024x768 or bigger.

I've also finished re-working the quote and image features in the forums. You can now choose what you want to quote, signatures excluded, and images are displayed up to the max width of the content area, so no more plain thumbnails.

I have said this before but, it would be awesome to have a park update place that we could upload pictures onto...even a forum, because a VERY commonly asked question in the Ski Gabber is, I'm heading up to ________ this weekend, and im wondering how its park is doing, can people tell me?
(Insert Mountain in blank spot), I see, with a park update forum, people will just check there so you don't have to wait untill you are back from your trip for a reply of how the park is doing.

Problem with everyone rating people on karma: Most of the members here are, well, dumb 13 year old kids who will rate people they don't like low repeatedly, and probably create 2 dozen new accounts to do it with. As for Nopoles' suggestion, are we saying that the bad (red) members are the ones who post a lot and the good (green) ones are the ones with cameras? I'm confused as to how that reflects "karma".

when a new username is created on an ip or web address already occupied, a verification email has to be sent by one of the parties stating that the new S/N isnt a god damn alias

could you get it so that at login it remembers ur name? it used to but now it doesnt anymore. like for me id type in t and it would show a list of all member that start with t that logged in on my comp. and then when u click on it it has your password. it hasnt worked for a while. small, but i liked it

special privilages for older members sounds good because if you start basing things on how many posts poeple have people are going to post whore like crazy. Also there is already a problem with people not taken seriously just becuase they have so few posts, if things are based on how many posts someone has anyone with a low post number will be taken even less seriously.

I am sure this will get lost. But how about seaprate sections. and the second part where he who flames with negativity and crass remarks, and the second part where if you do flame you aren't allowed back into part 2. Fun is fun to some to others it is offensive. Those who are offended should have a place to and those who like that stuff have a place too....

A simple moderated board. Too much work?

not a big thing so it might be a little easier to add:

when you are recieving a PM from someone there should be an indacator in the same window, that displays wether or not that person is online.

I live in a place far far away, where on occasion the telly tubbies will come to play....and that's when Ma gets out the shotgun. Damn critters climb in our gutter system all the time.

i was thinking about a top rated video section

a quick chat that doesnt get refreshed every 10 seconds or so but that is instant so convos are easier to understand

also maybe look into being able to have multiple front page pics where everytime you log in there is a new one. maybe a new one from the top rated section or something like that.

^ yeah that'd be a pretty cool idea, instead of just sticking it all in one giant thread, have a couple smaler ones one for chat, topic discussion, song requests. there should also be some kind of note saying that people must request songs up to a few hours before nsradio goes on the air or else songs get bumped to next show.

i dont really know if any of this would work, but making the nsradio forum a bit more efficient might be worth some looking into.
