There's a sweet song by Muse called Thoughts of a Dying Athiest. I couldn't handle thinking about it too much, but what do you guys think?
Imagine dying and not believing in God, or an afterlife... It scares the Hell out of me.

its so fucking simple, yet every fucking intelligent christian likes to take god further away from simplicity then imaginable.

Looking at the universe they believe in one holy god. A Being. A living being in the atmoshpere yet they cant explain what lifeform he consists of, what created him, how he came to rule the universe or anything...

so what the fuck... explain god christians...

back to the thread... dying and not believing in god would suck...

obviously humans are living beings.. we were created....

The argument is over what created us. So with that, how far can you go? A ruler didnt point a wand and say that goes there.. its obvious that didnt happen cus that type of world we would know our ruler..(god)

In our universe, galaxy, down to the fuckin solar system its like.... here, here is your world you create, destroy it... do whatever the fuck you want with it.... just dont include me(the creator)...

so pick your god and stick with it and hope probability is on your side to go to heaven or whatever the hell you humans created to make yourselves feel better about dying.

ok, not trying to change anyone's opinion, but just a thought. i read a psychology text on death, and apparently people who don't believe in an afterlife tend to lead a fuller secular life, because they know their time is limited. Thus they take full advantage of it instead of thinking they'll live on immortally in the afterlife. As an athiest, that is how I think of death. I'm not saying it's better, but if you're an athiest and you think death is depressing, you shouldn't. Death helps you lead a better life.

When you die, its the end. There is absolutely no proof of any gods and there is no proof that you have something called a soul which can transcend from one form of life to another.

Being an atheist, death doesn't really scare me, but the thought of it all being over is kinda strange to think about. I'll take death as it comes. If its actually the end, what can I do about it?

For now I'm going live life how I feel it should be lived. I'll do what I think and feel is right, not what some holy scripture or some god "tells" me to do. If there is actually some form of god or afterlife, great, but its not going to alter how I act in the present. Don't get me wrong, I feel you should uphold good morals and whatnot in life, but I do it because I feel it makes the world work better, not because its what god "told" me to do.

non of that is proof, evolution is just a theroy, and one that has alot of flaws in it. But people put their faith in it just the same as people put their faith int god. Why? because it makes them feel comfortable by removing some of the uncertianty from their lives. there is nothing proven in evolution.

^ actually microevolution has been proven many times. And although macroevolution has not been proven, there is evidence to support the theory. As for a god and the afterlife, what evidence have we discovered?

there is evidence for it when interpretted through an evolutionnary lense.

i would like to say that i completely agree with ghostdragon. most people ask me why, if god is so powerful, does he want worship, and then compare christians to slaves. but it is like parents having a kid, its not so that they have someone to always love and adore them. its just a natural response to your giver of life i think.

and to the " let's get one effin thing straight" person. don't speak in utter absolutes.


now, if i weren't jet lagged, i would keep going. but i won't.

but macroevolution has also been mathamaticly disproven. All life as we know it could not have come from one cell in the distant past. there is too much variation for the amount of time that life has been on the planet to have naturally occoured threw chance mutations.

no, don't extrapolate, thats not what i said. im saying that worshipping God is because we are thankful to him, like a kid telling his mom he loves her for her cooking or whatever, and that the mom doesn't have the kid for the kid to say they love her, though it is natural. what i mean is that God didn't create us, as i belive he did, for praise and adulation, but that that comes naturally.

but in a sense, the fact that i believe God created us means that these "instincts" have been programmed into us.

seems though that you are picking a fight... one that i don't want to get into.

It hasn't been disproved. It's difficult to prove it one way or another, although its PRETTY DAMN clear we evolved from monkeys, and if you don't believe that, then you are pretty much just ignoring facts.
God on the other hand is impossible to prove. Same with any kind of after life. Jesus WAS real, but him coming back after dying, can't be proved either.

i'm not too keen on religion because almost every war in the history of the world has been started because of religon. When i die i want to be cremated and have half of my ashes given to the mountains and the other half to the ocean. I think the after life can be made what you want it to be, i really doubt there are white pearly gates.

Beliefs are not equal to reality. If I chose to believe God and there is no afterlife, it really serves me no purpose. If I don't believe in God and there is an afterlife, how does my non belief in God translate to a negative afterlife? If we're isolating a religion here (Christianity) than I can follow your logic. The afterlife is a relatively vague concept and it's not really universally defined. I find it interesting that everyone's version of the afterlife happens to be coherent with what we (humans) in the world consider positive or desirable.

It makes more sens to me to expect the "worst." If something "better" comes along then you're not dissapointed.

I am an atheist, and death both scares and excites me. It's kinda like dropping a cliff you didn't scope. Is it gonna be a 30 foot drop to your death on rocks (or at least severe injury)? Or are you going to land in 5 feet of powder, and come away with a huge smile on your face? Or something in between? One idea that I've always kinda half believed in is reincarnation, coming back as a different being. I also read about what GhostDragon had to say, and thought it was pretty interesting, but you have to keep in mind that Christianity isn't the only religion. Also, I thought what you said about believing in nothing means you will accomplish nothing was bullshit. Unless I misinterpreted it. I do really like what Apple had to say, as he put out there something I've been wanting to tell people for so long now.....

dude, in real terms, that would be the stupidest thing you could possible do. and as for your analogy, why not 'check out the landing' before you drop the cliff, for safety reasons? your logic is totally illogical, my friend.

im not sure thats entirly true joel...

I really only wanted to show that evolution as we know it can not be fact. It is just another one of the cultural myths designed to relive our anxieties. It is esentialy the same as the rain example i gave earlier. Man sees water falling from the sky. That is his proof that Zeus is pouring buckets of water down from the heaven. Mind you, evolution is slightly more complex than that, but still basicly the same. Man finds DNA, figures out that it is the blueprint for life as we know it. Notice how even the term "blueprint" implies design. He has made observations of the world around him and then because there is no soild answer of how DNA came into being with such complex patterns and creating such marvolous things, Man creates something to fill the void. Perhaps because he doesnt want to admit that there could be a creature greater than he is, or perhaps because his curiosity (sp?) needs to be satasfied. Either way, People who belive in the theory of evolution put their faith into it, just as people who belive in god put their faith into god.

As an intresting side note, in the Ottawa citizan today, on the front page there was an artical about a museum that opened in march somewhere in the states. This muesume was a natural histroy muesum which followed the creationist point of view. Its also intersting to point out that in the article, it said that 55% of americans belive creationism to be how life came into being.

Back to the thread, on the topic of athesim. Athesim is a very contridicting frame of mind. Atheists belive there is no god, but by beliving there is no god you are automaticly acknowalaging gods existance. He has to be there for you to say he does not exist. trippy eh?

and about the article, i didnt catch it, but i'm pretty sure it's dr. ken ham's museum, and i think its a pretty rad idea.

No, someone has to SAY he is there for us to say he doesnt exist. Not trippy. Anyways, christianity believes that animals other than humans have no heaven and hell, when they die, that's it. Give me one reason to believe that humans should be any different than any other animals; we had to be created just like them, why should we have a god? The only real thing that makes us different from the animals is our so-called intelligence, with that "intelligence" the only thing we have done is fuck up the earth. I could go on for so long, but im done for now.

reading this thread is really trippy while you are listening to david bowies song "space oddity". My opinion is there is a god. if there werent every thing would have an easily explanable answer as to why it happened. i think evolution is pretty mich bull. natural selection is more reasonable, considering that you actually see it happen. explain to me how there is a big ass explosion that leads(through a rather long and senseless proces) to people, which in turn create computers, nuclear weapons, and incredibly complicated languages, math, and technology.
also, talking isn't an instinct, we have to be taught how to speak. this being, true tell me who taught the first person to speak if there was no creator.

i think reincarnation is wierd. i dont think it happens perminently, but maybe after you dye, evry once in a while you could get a chance to comeback and make an attemt to influence someone elses decisions, but not actually be them or control them.
