Thoughts of a Dying Athiest

There's a sweet song by Muse called Thoughts of a Dying Athiest. I couldn't handle thinking about it too much, but what do you guys think?
Imagine dying and not believing in God, or an afterlife... It scares the Hell out of me.

It doesn't scare me really. It's probably the most exciting way to die because you have no idea whats coming. Think about dissapointed theists will be when their afterlife dreams are shattered.

well, not like they would know right? i mean, if there is no afterlife after all, then you wouldn't know, since you would have ceased to exist, right?

I'm an atheist and i try not to think about what happens at the end of your life. Hard to imagine anything when any idea proposed by any relgion or person seems unbelievable.

Im not scared though i kinda believe in something but i dont really and i feel that there are more people in worse shape than me for me to be wasting his time, if shit hits the fan i pray or soemthign but other than that im not religous at all . good personhood is all relative though. God is forgiving, thats why you have a life to ask forgiveness. but once its done, its done. you can't ask when you are being convicted. like if you were going off to the execution rack and were:"ok, ok, im sorry, can i get off the hook now?". doesn't work that way.

but if life was to ask for forgivness then why would you have to forget everything in your 'pre life' or whatever you want to call it. that would be like expecting a killer who killed your dad but then got amnesia to say sorry to you. none of this religion stuff makes any sence to me. if i found a religion that i really thought was true im sure i would try to live its teachings or whatever. but it hasnt happened yet. my parents and most of my family are mormon. some stuff about the religion makes sence but other parts just totally piss me off. but i like talking about stuff like this.

I just dont understand how all of the religions in the world can have it right. There are too many and they are all far to diffrent. and whats more is that mot of the major ones say "if you arnt one of us, Your going to hell" so how is it that For following my religion i go to my heaven, but i also go to 13 other religions hells?
I dont see the point of waiting for this life to end so you can get into some blissfull afterlife in another frame of existance. I dont understand why we cant all just work together to make what we are guarenteed of having, or the present, into something better for everyone.

ill tell you how god was created... he was created in the minds of men. shocker eh? I say this because there is no proof of his existance. of course if there was proof of his existance, then there would be no need for faith anymore, which is what christianity is all about, and god as we know it would cease to exist. The is where god exists. that is where all deities exist, and its been that way through out time.
Although, when religion begain, it was because man was in a primitave thinking stage, and what he saw was how things were and he would make up stories to explain things he didnt understand. For example, that when it rained, zeus was pouring buckets of watter down on him, or that a rough sea, because it moved, must be alive, and since it was alive it could be litteraly whiped into submission.
Most of these stories, these myths, are simply a way to relive cutlural anxieties (not understanding something beings on fear). Our cultures' major anxiety is that of death, and so we have created our own myths to deal with what we dont understand or know anything about.

i don't think the human species is supposed to know what (if anything) happens when we die. that's why i don't worry about it. i can pretty much guarantee one thing: no matter what you might speculate happens when you die, you're wrong. whatever i might try to believe happens when i die, i'm wrong. what happens when we die is beyond our limited abilities of comprehension.
but that's just my opinion, don't get me started on my thoughts on major religions.

Word, I like thinking about this kind of stuff.
That universe shit is rediculous to think about... National Geographic had an issua on it and all of Einstiens theories regarding the expansion of the universe and all of that. It was crazy, but basicly said that the universe is expanding, but this is one of infinity universes out there. Pretty it talked about alternate realities having different kinds of universes, where the physical laws that govern here, such as gravity, or mass, or pretty much ANYTHING we know, might not even exist in these other universes. It is impossible to get to them, because they don't exist in our reality, but they do exist beyond the border of our known universe.
Its freakin mind boggling to think about.
Maybe when we die, we go to one of these alternate realities?

it really doesn't matter what you believe in, because no one knows what happens and you can believe in whatever you want but that can't change what really happens....whatever that may be. personally i am an atheist... mostly for this kind of topic, i would rather not get myself all pysched on going to heaven when i have no reason to believe it really exists. why set your hope high for something you can't be sure about? i'd rather not live on what could be a whole lot of false hope.

Im christian, but i am super open minded. I am a christian because thats leaves me with some options, when I die I will either go to heaven (sweet deal) or into the ground to rot like the rest of you. If this happens then its still cool because being christian, I led a pretty good life by following the morals and values my religion has given me. Its a win-win situation.

Then you wouldnt be getting into heaven IF there is one. You see what im saying? If people were smart everyone would have one religion they beleived in. Because if that religion turned out to be right...BAM eternal salvation. Almost any religion out there will make you lead a better life, excluding extremists in almost any religion.

No, i dont see what your saying at all. I completly agree with the win win thing though.
but tell me this. If parents and preists can tell children that the dead family pet is going to heaven, a pet which never worships or prays or even has the ability to comprehend a religion, then how come the church says that if I dont worship, pray or belive, I cant go to heaven?

That is actually a very good question.
I think pastors and parents have long told their kids that their pet is going to heaven as a way to comfort them.
I can not think of any mention in the Bible of animals going to heaven. However, there are numerous verses that say the only way to get to heaven is through Jesus and that we are given a choice. This does not apply to animals, unless you believe that animals have choice and can make conscious decisions.
Any church that tells you what you can and can't do to get into heaven is wrong according to the Bible. You don't have to pray constantly, you don't have to tithe, and you don't have to worship. Don't worry about all that. It's simple. Jesus summed up the whole Bible for us in a few words.
Matt 22:36-40
36"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" 37Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'[b] 38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'[c] 40All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."
It doesn't matter if you go to church or how often you pray. All that matters is that you believe in God, love God, and love one another. If you do, then everything else will fall into place. Worshipping and praying does not make you a Christian, but if you are a Christian you will want to worship and pray. Think of it more like a relationship. Praying is a way of talking and getting to know God. If you have a relationship with anyone then you will talk with them to learn more about them. Chances are your relationship with anyone wouldn't go anywhere if you never talked with them.
I also think worshipping is often misinterpreted. When God says to worship him, we'll think he means for us to lay on the floor and place our hands up and down and constantly say oh, praise God! I'm sorry, but I'm not doing that, and I don't think God expects us to. By worshipping he means to bring glory to his name. We can bring glory to his name by following our dreams, chasing our goals, and doing the best at the gifts he gave us.
If you love skiing, then go skiing. Have fun doing it, and tell him thanks for giving you the ability to. That's worship. That's it.
Believe in what you want. Believe in God, Believe there is no God, or believe in the force. But just make sure you believe in something! It is complete bullshit to think it doesn't matter if you believe in something or not. If you believe in nothing, then I can guarantee you will accomplish nothing in your life. Everyone who has done anything great in their life has done so because they believed strongly in something or another.

I would like to say a few things concerning this topic...
First oh which is that everyone should read Chuck Palahniuck's (the guy who wroteFight Club for you nonliterary types) new book Haunted in particular a certain story that is concerned with the afterlife. While it does not directly pertain to this subject, it is an interesting and unique look at the afterlife.
Secondly, for the comment that dealt with the creation of God being mans is also a pertinent point. Voltaire said it best when he stated that "If there were no God it would be necessary for him to create one." This sits well with the idea of governance, however it does not do so in a spiritual aspect.
Thirdly, upon ventureing on to death as we all will, would it not be wiser to have a type of safety plan (to say the very least) in which the void we face might have a safety net rather then all speculation. Upon facing death, logically it would be wiser for man to believe in God due to the fact that their will be nothing worse then Hell for those who do. if you are a believer then if there is a God you are safe, and if there isn't you are in the same boat as every other atheist, Buddhist, hindu, and muslim. And if the god is not God (in the Judeo-Christian sense of the word) you are not damned because no other faith believes in damnation. However, if there is a God, you are fucked if you are a atheist. Thusly, it would be more logical to believe in God rather then not to believe in one.
